They’re determined to give it to Saudi and a few others as often as possible under the guise of rotating between continents. With the number of games and stadia required now there’ll be fewer countries capable of hosting so we’ll increasingly see multiple country hosts and the additional travel and cost for fans.
The 2030 ‘centenary’ nonsense ticks a box for Africa and Europe along with South America then we’re all off to Saudi in 2034. Montserrat 2038 will be good.
I don’t think there’s any link between the two tbh. People will travel to a World Cup. Bar a few clubs there was never going to be sufficient interest in clubs’ fans travelling to this nonsense. Doubt we’d be filling stadiums if it was held here during the working week.
Vague memories now but didn’t he famously raise his game for England despite being mediocre in club football? Scored against Turkey in a somewhat feisty qualifier at Sunderland.
I think when done well it’s the most exciting way to play but probably the riskiest when it goes wrong and nowadays relies on a level of athleticism we chronically lack. I guess in that formation Dembele would see himself as the little man striker but I’ve seen nothing yet to suggest he’s up to it.
Bring back the WM formation and we’re really talking.
Senegal have the AFCON at the end of the year and a decent mix of experience and pace. Was always going to be tricky but a totally pointless friendly at this stage of the season.
Still disappointing when the second string get a chance and turn in that even taking that into account. I get why Southgate and now Tuchel struggle to trust some of the younger players and go back to Trippier/Henderson/Maguire or whoever we often feel shouldn’t be in there. The mentality that used to exist just isn’t there in the same way. There isn’t the same level of pride in being picked for England from many players there used to be. Feels like a chore to many of them.
Was thinking yesterday the fans were seemingly as into it as they would be any major final. Like the Club World Cup that hasn’t translated here at least yet. Like winning the League Cup for big clubs though, it must help to have that feeling of winning something.
Amazing of Portugal to punch above their weight again. A relatively poor country of 10m people. Just found a way to win again against the odds.
To some extent I get it. They’re buying a profile and potential and think their chances of turning him into a player worth more are good enough. But the fee just doesn’t stack up against those odds IMO. They’re seeing something we don’t but then more than one big club wanted him.
Does make £5m for Varane look a bit meh all of a sudden.
I think they’ll be miles off it and would be quite content with mid-table. Obviously it remains to be seen who they bring in but the bookies have them just outside the playoffs which I think is far too short.
If we got relegated and then won the LDV Vans trophy or whatever it’ll be called next I’d probably take a week off. An actual major trophy would be one of the top life moments for all of us.
Putting aside the ill feeling we understandably have for him I find it bizarre a club with their resources picks him week in week out. Seems to consistently be a weak link whenever I watch them along with Choudhury. 31 going on 37. Good long throw I guess.
