Maybe this is the thread to discuss our stark difference in defending aptitude, when playing stronger sides or needing to change tactics or personnel.
Why do we look so amazing at it, then so poor? |

We have too many good wingers now and too many glaring issues to fix in the tactics and quality in our first XI, to use our matches as a window for loan deals.
I get your reasoning, but it’s too late for that now. And with the window closed, it’s not worth it to just get a bit back on wages imo |

You don’t need to be an analyst to answer a question about a point you made.
Someone said he has issues. I asked what are these issues exactly. You said we are not analysts 🤷♂️ I was asking what issues the poster is talking about exactly. I just wanted clarity in my head so I could be on the same page.
As I said, I don’t see a particular issue, bust a glaringly bad game for him.
I also said that I don’t see anything special in him.
If there are no particular issues and he’s just not as good as expected, maybe he will be totally fine and just needs to bulk up a bit and have a year or 2 in the championship, like Eom needed. |

I mean, he hasn’t pulled any trees in his first few games, but nothing like his performance against Saints |

Great article as usual…
Some important talking points to come out of it. Should they have their own thread?
Most of the issues were out of possession imo. And Eli Just. Apart from that it wasn’t too bad when we had the ball.
But about the pressing…
Maybe needs its own thread?
I don’t get how the players (ok some different ones in Saints loss) understand how to press effectively against one team and then totally uncoordinated in the next? 🤷♂️
It looked lazy against Southampton.
Was it the main pressers missing? (Idah/Eom).
Was it Vipi and Yeo just not used to the pace? Or the plan?
This looked our main issue. The press and the counter-press. We couldn’t do it.
To me the difference in motivation seemed stark.
When Idah came on, it seemed like he was raring to go and attack the goalie every time he got the ball. Waiting on the edge of the area to burst in and close down. Don’t see Vipi do this at all, til after half time and a probable rollicking 🤷♂️
Yes, also correct about our right back.
We have a choice between defensive nous, passing range, versatility. Vs attacking nous, pace.
Both good in certain situations I admit, but also both lacking in certain areas. Lissah seems to have a lack of pace.
I think it’s a little difficult to judge them against Sienza and Sorba as they are clearly the best wingers in the division and Sorba now playing higher and Scienxa probably should be. Half decent or young championship fullbacks should be expected to come off second best more often than not, to a top winger. Hence, the report is correct. We need other ways to cover our fullbacks in games like this, as we do not have the quality to keep control of top wingers for 90 mins.
But what are the options?
Maybe need another thread to discuss this also, as it’s a big issue.
Ronald a good option as mentioned, but it will clearly inhibit our danger going forward.

What are actually his issues though?
To me I could only see him holding the ball too long. I didn’t really notice any other glaring issues.
Not sure what made him do this against Southampton, as it wasn’t so pronounced in his other appearances I’ve seen.
He just didn’t want to pass the ball. Running into trouble every time. |

Yalcoue played a bit and I think should have played more.
Personally think Mongs will play less, as we’ll have strong wingers and don’t really use players that hold on to the ball, hence probably use Mongo as a super sub, or certain games where we specifically need a different approach out wide.
Yalcoue was significantly more versatile imo.
I am really excited to see what Mongo can do and we will surely get a few highlight reels and bums off seats, but personally Nunes looked better last season from the clips I saw. He did nothing.
This kid is clearly going to be a superstar, but maybe a bit too early in his career for us to get the best out of him.
Couple that with Matos’ preference for permanent signings, I think we will probably see less of this kid than we would like. |

Yes but you’re acting as if he’s been playing full games up until now.
He hasn’t had one full 90 and already has a goal and assist, plus I would guess a high shot on target per attempt stat as well.
Which stats do you see as “dramatically worse”? Or just in general as a player/human? |

I thought that might be the case, but then thought that he’s our player, not South Korea’s.
It’s not as if we can use all his energy up and then Korea will have to deal with the fatigued player, which seems logical.
Problem is, Korea probably won’t care about his fatigue and just want the strongest players out for the longest time, to ensure they win gold.
Hence, if we don’t use the rest rotate thing with him, we risk them getting him injured or totally wearing him out whilst away.
That makes sense to me anyway, not sure if that’s the actual protocol for any pros tbh. |

I don’t know about dramatic, more like he’s a bit off his pace from last season…however, seeing the different way Idah and EOM play together. Frantic pace, quick passes, strong and fast press. Vipi just looks dramatically off, but I bet he’s not that much off the way he played last season. He just got away with it due to his extreme goal scoring. |

Personally think Matos likes Key in more open and attacking games.
Lissah out wide when we play the more adventurous teams.
I think that idea was good.
The issue I saw last night seemed mainly to be a lack of energy off the ball.
Vipotnik looked unfit and slow in first half. Wingers looked devoid of ideas and Eli Just just didn’t want to pass and just ran with the ball every time before eventually losing it.
I feel sad to say it, but Vipotnik is not our most important player in Matos’ favoured way of playing. He doesn’t work hard enough.
Watching Idah and Eom working so hard, with one touch passing and quick flicks, was a million miles from Vipi attempting to do it last night.
I think that Idah was always Matos’ preferred striker, but Vipi’s amazing scoring last season, stopped Matos feeling he was able to drop him to play his favoured side.
I do think most of the team last night was our best.
Defensively we can use Key in the easiest games and Lissah out there against the teams with the tricky wingers of stronger forward line.
Otherwise I just think it’s Estaquio in for Fulton, for our strongest midfield.
Issue is how to get everyone firing like Idah and Eom. We will have some time to see if Yeo/Opoku can work the quick passes with him.
Also look forward to seeing Mongo, but he seems more of a dribbler, than a short one touch pass and move winger with strength and power. Maybe will be used in different situations |

From the stats I saw on Flashscore, he came on after 10mins and had no attacking numbers at all. Maybe 1 off target shot.
Not sure if it’s not accurate, due to Scottish league or if he just stood there all game 🤷♂️ |

I haven’t watched much of any other teams apart from us this season, so unsure, but aren’t O’Brien and Moore two of Wrecsam most combative or physical players? Seems strange to leave them out considering we prioritise aggression these days 🤷♂️ |

Was amazing to watch.
Our squad depth is deeper than I have seen since our prem days.
Best defence in the league with our first choice CB pairing injured. Personally I’d have these as first choice.
But I couldn’t be happier.
Best feeling for many years. |

Shame to see him on the bench tonight, but I guess it was always the plan, due to all the speculation and stuff.
I expect him to start from now on.
Still not definite but if he stays then that’s our biggest piece of business this summer. Hats off to the club for tying him down for longer as well. Can’t believe how good it feels this season. Mad. Be amazing back in the prem |
