Worrying thing for me was Chiwome touched the ball only twice. Perhaps not his fault, as he got zero service from selfish colleagues that tried to beat too many defenders when a pass was warranted. Too often we consequently lost the ball and were then on the back-foot.
Vast improvement when Hunt and Payne came on. |

Samson Tovide (for Fletcher 63) - On for his debut. Straight swap at centre-forward. Gave the ball away needlessly with multiple options ahead of him as Bromley restored their lead. Got in up the right a few minutes later but his return ball to DSF was poor. We’re going a bit easy in light of his lack of a pre-season, but still an afternoon to forget. 4
No surprises there….!
A mere four and the final line suggests a generosity that wasn’t warranted! |

Totally concur about both decisions, but we seem to be in the minority from my survey of post match pub opinion. What on earth was Raggett doing with his arm erect…..waving to his mum?
Minutes after he came on I predicted Williams would see red. Incredibly aggressive in a 1960’s style that has (sadly) been lost in the modern game. To be fair, his impact from the bench did lift us, but one can’t leap high and come down studs first above the ball without consequence.
A point was a fair result. We are four points from the relegation zone and four from automatic promotion. That’s better than our status in most seasons I have watched. My glass is still half-full with positivity. |

Delightful editorial Buddy!
I’m aware of at least one Sombrero likely to turn up tomorrow, but is potentially wasted as Cotterill is on a three match touch line ban.
I wonder which U’s will turn up? We have played like Real Madrid for 40 minutes and like the Muppets for 60. Our Substitutions either improve our shape or create utter calamity. Depth of squad is evidently an issue. |

Then we don’t beat those below us and the malaise since Robbie Cowling bought the club reoccurs.
His valuation is patently ridiculous if the training ground is excluded as the club has zero assets except residual player contracts, last week’s stale hot dogs and the goodwill of league two status plus 1700 loyal ST holders. The other 1800 will walk away if we don’t make progress now DC that has had his honeymoon period. He didn’t deserve the abuse he got Saturday, but the tide is patently turning. |

Thanks to the many Col U fans that came down to Castle Park and were treated to a sensational cricket match.
Colchester’s Joe MacGregor hit a marvelous 132 to secure being the leagues top scorer for the second consecutive year. However, The Colchester innings was limited to a below par 217. Crucially, three batting bonus points were secured, enough to guarantee them top flight Premier League cricket in 2027.
A Hutton CC win looked like a formality which would give them the league title, but a magnificent bowling performance by Colchester denied them. Veteran Kiwi paceman Darren Eckford returned for his first game since early June, and Dan Gladwell was back from Essex CCC duty. Along with wrist spinner Hassan Bin Shahib they soon had Hutton reeling.
But with ten runs required and a wicket remaining, Hutton still looked favourites, until 18 year old Jonty Ray bowled an unplayable delivery to demolish Viraj Ghandi’s stumps.
Thrilling stuff. Free admission, back next year….. |

There’s Nationwide Building Society HQ. I worked there as an external consultant for a month. It’s like a city within a city. Huge infrastructure.
Until 2021 Honda cars were manufactured there until Brexit and trade tariffs shifted manufacture to Japan, USA and China. The plant was demolished in 2024.
There is only one away friendly pub.
What else…. a U’s victory of course! |

If you are not heading for Swindon, Castle Park will be the local focus for quality sport.
The 2025 Essex Premier League Champions host 2026 Champions Elect as Colchester & EE face Hutton CC in a fifty limited over battle. A Hutton win gives them the title.
If defeated, to avoid relegation Colchester must take enough bonus points to mirror Hornchurch CC’s total in the event that Hornchurch lose to Buckhurst Hill CC. Colchester do start with a +3 advantage. However, if Hornchurch beat Buckhurst Hill, Colchester are already safe having a +9 advantage over the latter and only 8 bonus points available. Lots riding on the Castle Park result.
Why are 2025 Champions Colchester at risk of relegation? Similarly Frinton from the East Anglia Premier League (already relegated)?…
One answer, the 2026 experiment of like for like injury and WK substitutes in First Class Cricket. All season, CEECC (and Frinton) have lost key players to 12th man duties for Essex CCC, just in case of an injury, while our local clubs struggle to replace them. Then when regular Essex players vanish for the Hundred, our local stars might get a few games in the Metro Cup. These two changes in FCC are wreaking havoc on local Premier League recreational cricket as the strongest First XIs with the best talent are inevitably the most impacted.
But it looks like Colchester might have one if it’s strongest line ups on parade on Saturday making the showdown an exciting prospect. Free admission, excellent bar and pavilion ( non- members welcome). Start 11:30.
Colchester skipper, Joe MacGregor is the leading run scorer in the Essex Premier League. He is on target to uniquely repeat this feat in consecutive seasons. So much at stake in Castle Park….

Was at the game.
Best L2 atmosphere ever, superb entertainment, the marginally better side won. Last twenty minutes the U’s threw the kitchen sink at the Gas and their second goal was an inevitable consequence of a fortuitous break.
The U’s sloppily gave away possession too often. Thorne was ineffective, but most other team aspects positive. Sesay and Kouassi impressed,
Normally I’d leave a 2-0 defeat with a long way home with my head hung low, but I saw enough to be encouraged. I’m confident this was our most difficult fixture and we nearly took something from it. |

I must say the quality of Match Preview Reports are suitably honoring Durham’s memory.
I was fortunate on Saturday. Trekked down to Epping with Colchester & East Essex CC and it pelted down with rain on arrival. Thankfully the umpires had the wisdom to soon realise the weather was terminal permitting me to race to the Jobserve Stadium.
I’m not convinced by Bradley. Still too lightweight and ineffective. My takeaway was the defence looked solid and inspired substitutions secured the win. But it will be a greater test at Bristol on Tuesday. I will make that one, but will miss Swindon as it’s the last cricket fixture in Castle Park where Colchester host Essex Premier League Champions elect, Hutton CC, who need a win to snatch the title from Chelmsford.
Colchester need a win or (up to) five bonus points in defeat to avoid relegation. However, should Hornchurch beat Buckhurst Hill Colchester will already be safe and the latter relegated. In the event of a Buckhurst Hill victory, Colchester are currently three points clear of Hornchurch and only need to match their aggregate points total to guarantee safety as they have more seasons wins.
With so much riding on the outcome, it’s a massive fixture in Castle Park. Free admission, free parking, and an excellent pavilion bar. Superb 50 limited overs cricket. It’s also an opportunity to witness Joe MacGregor top the leading run-getter table for the second consecutive year, a feat we think is unique in the Essex Premier League history. Why county cricket has overlooked his talents escapes me. I’d pay money to watch him. |

Perfectly legitimate, and I’ve seen it before (I think was in the Premier League), but I don’t recall when. As a consequence, most goalkeepers look behind before placing a ball on the deck. He will in future…. |

SORRY, the Colchester Summer Series of Concerts in Castle Park clash with various Colchester and East Essex Cricket Club events. So if you are planning to attend any cricket event in the next fortnight, can I apologise in advance for the loud noise occurring barely 50 yards away in the next field.
The cricket cub has no affinity with the concert series and is concerned that you will be forced to listen to them while participating in cricket club events.
To compensate you for the inconvenience, we are opening the bar at 1700 each day (earlier on match days) and will charge zero for admission whilst holding the price of ale at our normal prices, rather than exploit the thousands flocking into Castle Park that will no doubt be mugged by concert prices.
No membership required as the cricket club is an inclusive, charitable community sports club. All are welcome. Tell your friends & family.....
