By all means correct me if I’m wrong Nick, but initially didn’t we engage the services of a well known and respected brief only after the E F L verdict had been handed down, and we wanted to appeal the same ?
My opinion at the time, and still is, that the Club’s management thought that if they adopted a softly softly approach, didn’t contest the media narrative and relied on the old pals act at director level then not only would they save money in proper legal representation, but the punishment would not result in exclusion from the playoffs.
How wrong they were.
Hopefully, in regard to the F A they haven’t or won’t make the same mistakes and once again try and take a water pistol to a gun fight. [Post edited 22 Sep 11:52]

My thoughts also Pat.
In my opinion, to supposedly save money legal representation wise, we took a water pistol to a gun fight with the E F L , lost control of the media narrative and subsequently got kicked out of the playoffs.
I hope am wrong but now it appears that there is every indication that we are about to commit the same mistake again. |

Ironically you are correct in that you don’t get automatic promotion by losing away to teams like Watford and Wrexham and dropping points from winning positions at Lincoln and Birmingham.
You may finish top eight but then it’s just a completely lottery.
As for Tonda, I suspect that very soon he may not be allowed to remain our man, even if we want him too. [Post edited 19 Sep 18:20]

Glad to have brought those happy memories back for you Hythe and thanks for the story and thanks also to Shotters for his recollections.
I’ve fond memories of watching Hampshire play at Dean Park Bournemouth in what I recall was a Sunday League limited overs fixture against Kent. Colin Cowdrey was reaching the end of his career and was more than slightly over weight. When it was his turn to bat there was a mass chant of “ bring on fatty” from one of the beer tents. He duly arrived and dispatched the ball to all parts of the ground with consummate ease, proving that unlike today you didn’t need to be super fit to be a top flight player.
Somehow life seemed more relaxed with more fun in those days, but then again I suspect that previous generations have also all said the same as their years reach a conclusion. [Post edited 19 Sep 13:25]

Sad times indeed for Hampshire.
I don’t attend now but well remember seeing their Championship winning side play at Bournemouth ( It was in Hampshire then ) during the 1961 season.
They were captained then by the very colourful charachter Colin Ingleby Mackenzie and also had a very fine bowler in Derek Shackleton.
Ingleby Mackenzie was a genuine Eaton educated toff who amongst other events in a colourful life was one of the last people to see Lord Lucan alive. Mackenzie died from a brain tumour and his funeral in St Paul’s Cathedral was attended by more than sixteen hundred people. [Post edited 18 Sep 19:48]

They would make better use of their time asking the manager and players why they got done 6-0 at West Ham.
I’m beginning to dislike them as much as Manure or Arsenal.

Play at home on Sunday and get done by a goal that was clearly offside from a team playing with ten men for most of the game.
Play on Tuesday and lose to Brighton after leading 2-0.
Almost makes up for those years of “ Fergie Time” and those less than neutral referees.

The first sentence of your second paragraph in particular.
Then again Nick is entitled to his opinion just like the rest of us.
As for players who Nick simply couldn’t stop criticising, I give you Mia Yoshida who I believe still holds the record for the most appearances in The Premier League for a Japanese player and was until quite recently, still playing in their national team.
As for Bazunu I thought that he was a player promoted beyond his abilities. Perhaps a spell as Bolton’s number one keeper will help him prosper, who knows. |

I suspect Shotters wasn’t at Upton Park on the last day of the season many years ago when Maddison scored a header in the 3-3 draw with West Ham, a result which kept us up once again.
Personally, I thought Le Gods display that day was his best ever. He scored a brilliant free kick just before halftime, put Dowie through for a penalty which he then scored and the ball on Maddison’s head for his goal. A world class performance. |

You aren’t a bed wetter jopreston, just a realist.
I posted before a ball was kicked that the effects of last season’s spy gate tomfoolery would not be shaken off quickly and at the moment I can’t see any evidence to change my opinion.
By any logical metric the summer window has not been good. Yes, we may have parted company with a few players either permanently or on loan, but what are we left with ?
Does anyone other than those serial happy clappers really believe that the current squad is better than that which finished last season ? If so, I really would like to know exactly what they base their views on.
Solak has done what he is perfectly entitled to do, after all it’s his club. He’s given instructions to the board to sell what they can, buy or loan cheap replacements and use the surplus income generated by so doing to balance the books.
After just five games we are already at least six points adrift of the league’s top two and only one point above the relegation zone and still the elephant in the room remains, what will the F A. do about Tonda ? [Post edited 6 Sep 13:41]

As I said previously MattFinish, I hope that your optimism is rewarded and “yes” perhaps I and some others are being a little negative.
On the other hand, sometimes your gut feeling turns out to be the correct one and I feel that this is one of those occasions. Put simply, there’s something about S F C at the moment that to me just doesn’t feel right. Perhaps it’s the players not knowing what punishment Tonda will receive and thinking why put the effort in because he may not even be the manager soon, who knows ?
Witness Downes giving an immediate after match interview effectively saying the team needs to try harder. Lack of effort after only five games when you are carrying a four point penalty and are currently one point above the relegation zone for pity sake.
Let’s hope that your confidence is well placed and Tonda stabilises the squad and we start to perform like a team that wants a top two finish. If by the International Break that doesn’t prove to be the case, then I imagine there may well be more than the odd one or two wanting him away. After all,when push comes to shove he hasn’t a lot of credit left in his box, given that his tomfoolery at the end of last season is probably the reason we are playing Championship football this. That’s the problem though Southamptonfan.
A large proportion of our fan base are happy clappers who whilst they see what’s happened still want to pretend all is well.
To me, Solak has chosen to balance the books due to the parachute payments coming to an end and the T V revenue being minuscule compared to membership of The Premier League, which is where we should now be playing if Tonda hadn’t sent people to hide behind trees.
It’s his club and he can do what he wants but for goodness sake clappers do see it for what it is. |

Interesting use of statistics MattFinish which makes no reference to the four point penalty we are unfortunately saddled with because of last season’s tomfoolery.
Add in the fact that we have sold arguably our two best players for £50 million and spent only £23 million and it’s plain to see that the squad is weaker than it was.
You are entitled to your opinion and I genuinely hope that your optimism is well founded.
Personally I feel that even at this early stage a top two finish will be beyond us. Top eight? Maybe, but not by continuing to take only 2 points out of every 9 points away from home. |
