he took over from Venables and promoted a lot of youth players from the u21 winners to the 1st team, ie Beckham, Nevilles, Rio, Owen, Campbell, Scholes, he got a formation sorted from the start , we played 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 depending on how you view it , he got through a tough world cup group against Italy when they were good he won the tournai tournament beating again Italy & france a sort of mini confederations cup if you will , he also wasn't scared of ego's in the dressing room and dumped Gazza & even dropped Beckham when he wasn't pulling his weight, can't see roy ever doing that He got the best out of Adams,Ince,Merson & Wright at International level
Hoddle is not the 2nd coming of Brian Clough I grant you but he is the only option to me if we are to bring on the current crop of youngsters not roy who again we reward with failure

Venables put all that in place, he had Dave Sexton working with the under 21's to bring scholes and co through together with one eye on the world cup and was able to take over a side with a feel good factor to them after Euro 96 who Venables had worked with tactically to really make them organised and capable of changing how they played.
He's not the worst England manager we've had but is a long way from our saviour. That World Cup in 98 it's easily forgotten that he refused to start Owen which cost us the Romania game and meant we had an impossible route to the final of Argentina, Holland, Brazil.

the fact that hoddle has his academy may have also added another string to his bow when you consider nurturing young talent

I remember Hoddle being incredibly reticent about bringing beckham or owen into the starting team during the 98 world cup and was basically forced to by the weight of their performances and public opinion

agree with Venables & Sexton , the way the FA treated them was shocking Hoddle was unlucky that world cup, it was le saux I think with a dodgy back pass which done us against Romania he started with teddy & shearer as that was his front 2 from the start he always had an eye on bringing on Owen (only 17 ) at the time when teams would tire the point is Hoddle at least had a game plan, tactics , was brave with his choices you seriously cannot say the same for Roy, as a bloke with a good opinion on Football like yourself Dave even you can see we will never progress to this magical period in 2 years time under Hodgson

I'm not sure about Hodgson and he annoyed me yesterday taking of Lallana which I thought ended any chance we had of scoring but in all honestly I think any manager will struggle to make England any good, we'll be better in 2 years time but still a long way behind the likes of Germany, Holland and Spain imo and probably Belgium as well.
I'd stick with Hodgson for now but think he'll be in big trouble if we don't start the qualifiers well
I think the manager has to bring something to the party. Hodgson is stable, he neither gives you something extra nor does he do unfathomable stuff that will lose you games. IMHO he is the definition of average and IMHO the national manager has to be better than average and give the team an extra 20% through tactics, team selection, motivation, selection and in game decisions. I dont think Hodgson gives us that and I dont subscribe to the must be English/ British thing either.
I'm old school and think in international football should be the best of ours against the best of yours and that includes the manager.
England's lack of quality coaches/managers is due to us always looking abroad for our answers and doing that with Sven and Capello sent us backwards imo

For me, Roberto MartÃnez would be fantastic as an England manager but he, and just about anyone, would be stupid to consider it.
Agree. I think England could benefit with someone younger and charismatic at the helm with a coaching staff and mindset in tune with todays game, not from the eighties or nineties. Roy's set up is all very Fulham, ordinary and with a flavour of bland tapioca about it, then he has Ray Lewington on his staff, hardly inspiring stuff. But the English FA, being the English FA will choose someone like him again, so I can see very little if any progress in the national side at all in the future.
So who are the charismatic motivators in the game? You know they won't get appointed because they aren't part of some glorified Civil Service projection of foreign policy. Hodgson is well lucky he fits the profile,if 'arry had been appointed and had come up with those results he would have been out the door with a size 10 boot up his arse.(assuming he got the gig in the first place). Can't see Hoddle renouncing his religious beliefs which were instrumental in his sacking.Maybe we can find someone who was Genghis Khan in a previous incarnation - although he wasn't that good in defence tbh.

I feel exactly the same, Dave. Still, with St George's Park up and running, and John Beck and Aidy Boothroyd filling senior coaching roles, it will surely be no time at all before we're churning out thousands of inspired coaches who understand the importance of technique and intelligence in footballers...
Sven got us to two world cup quarter finals, Keegan was a disaster Mclaren could not even get us qualified for the Euro's and Woy has overseen the worst performance I can remember at a championship (Euros) and the worst world cup performance since 1958. Anyone could have got that squad to two quarter finals, in 2006 they only had to beat Paraguay, Trinidad and Ecuador to reach that far. if Sven had faced the same group as Hodgson he would have been out first round as well.

My opinion is, we have too many players hyped up to better, than they really are. Whoever the manager is, he needs to get the players to release the effing football. How many times have our players run into blind alleys and lost the ball. The lot of them are guilty of this, will we never learn to pass the football.

Sorry Dave disagree its easy to make Sven a Cartoon Manger but we had some of our best results under him Qualified with Germany in our Group (1-5 will never be repeated ) we then had a tough group in 2002 Sweden, Nigeria, Argentina, we beat Argentina its also worth noting we had a few injuries in the 2002 world cup ,and the squad wasn't all that no Neville, Gerrard, Murphy, half fit Beckham we qualified for Euro 2004 having beat a very good Turkish team at the time also we had a great result away at their place to qualify we had our best tournament in 2004 for a while and were very unlucky not to beat the home team Portugal, (goal disallowed, rooney broken foot) yes 2006 wasn't great and the selections could have been better, (defoe &bent should have gone) but again we were unlucky against Portugal and again got to a QTR final sorry but Sven would have had us out of the group if he was still manager no doubts, Roy just about squeezed through the worst qualifying group in Europe to get there this last campaign, it was awful to watch bar the Poland game at home

In 2002 those injuries forced him to pick players in their best positions and have a good side, when he had options he got it horribly wrong every time. He should have done so much better with that group of players

were unlucky in 2004 but he still got it wrong playing Scholes wide where he was wasted and we struggled to keep the ball against Portugal.
