Wilson is the standout for me, easily good enough while Wayne Routledge probably good enough for a cap.

| QPR's best uncapped at full international level eleven on 16:33 - May 1 by CamberleyR | I always got the feeling that Venables for whatever reason didn't rate Les. He only won four caps under him in 18 months, started three games and didn't finish any of them. He was just off the back of a 25 goal season for Newcastle as well, his third 20+ in four seasons. I appreciate that Shearer and Sheringham were first choice but Les should have been the next in line. |
I got the feeling that Ferdinand didn't fit into Venables' tactical system, maybe, or at least that Venables couldn't fit him into it. He tried a lot of formations in the friendlies before settling on the Christmas Tree formation, but the one thing they all seemed to have in common is that they were very central with little width (even Anderton was narrowed in his play, I thought?). I think that Les could play anyway - back to goal, give and go, ball over the top, coming in off the wing (he played very well in that role against Holland which I went to see) but that he was always maybe unfairly associated with being a man that needed wingers. 24 years ago, so only hazy recollection Camberley.

Les could or should have come on during the semi final (extra time), his pace, strength and aerial ability would have shook the Germans and given them a lot more to do. But, he didn't play for Spurs at the time and if a sub was going to be used, it would have been Nick Barmby.
