Have to disagree on Rosetta Tharpe, Colin, me old mucker. She was a masive influence on Beck, page, Clapton et al, especially with that Gibson SG you used to use frequently, and that distorted tone.

Yes, now you mention it, I remember I have a DVD featuring her playing a Gibson SG and whirling about with it. I must try and find it.
People that write in the media say some strange things. The BBC said Jeff incorporated hiphop(?) into his music? A nice big article in the Times said he was probably the greatest rock guitarists. Fine. But they went on to list 20 guitar greats and bafflingly incuded Joni Mitchell, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Johnny Marr etc. OK, you can say it's a matter of taste but I'd hardly call these people guitar greats.
I think Johnny Marr Is a superb guitarist, some great Vids out there on Youtube on the guy.
Here's Joe Bonamassa If you've got 25 odd minutes spare.
My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Joni's method of open tuning – developed after she had polio as a child which left her with limited use of her left hand – was extremely unusual. I could absolutely see why another guitarist would be interested in it.
I do have a good story about him. My mate Jim from Farnborough used to date Sandra Cush who was a Sun page 3 model. Lovely girl.
When Sandra ran off with (and ultimately married) Jeff Beck, Jim went to the Sun newspaper to tell his story, and made front page news with the headline "WRINKLY ROCKER NICKED MY BIRD" above a picture of him topless looking like some 80's rock singer.
I wish I could find a copy. I'm sure Jim probably has one still.

Although I hate the Sun, there was apparently a headline about a copper who had a sex change op. He was sacked but went to court and won the case, getting his job back. The Sun headline ran - No Knobby Bobby Keeps Jobby.

I remember this going out live on ITV. She was a good old trouper, even tried it on with George Melly but got nowhere of course. 3 pickup Les Paul double cutaway later to be rebranded an SG.
