Millwall deliver more pain, and a cautionary tale to woeful QPR - Report on 12:47 - Feb 13 with 1631 viewsngbqpr

Hugely entertaining report, many nails hit squarely on the head, and caveat to the below, the way the wheels have come off, I expect us to finish around 18th / 19th.

But...am I in a minority of one in thinking:

1. We weren't woeful
2. The match could've gone either way
3. At last, we saw something approaching a proper half time warm up, while Millwall's subs were the ones aimlessly loafing around kicking the odd ball.
4. The crowd, well certainly P, Q, R, S really got behind the team for large periods, outsung Millwall often, and it wasn't the expected morgue even after we conceded

...maybe I'm just a happy clapper / gone soft in my old age / glass half full etc etc type.

Poll: Best hug a stranger / fall down five rows / 'limbs' late goals this season

1 - Woeful, " causing sorrow or misery". Yup.
2 - Not a chance, 2-1 flattered us.

Woeful - fair enough.

My partner, big soft spot for QPR, enjoyed / suffered a few hundred games with me over the years, but not quite a 'fan' and very objective, thought we edged the first half and were unlucky to go in behind, I was inclined to agree. Add that to the (ahem) kind of onslaught of the last 10, and I think a draw would've been merited. Ho hum.

Can we agree the ht warm up was a minor improvement?

I'm with you but the second we went behind I sort of knew we were done and that is the problem with this squad of players. We are too lightweight, we haven't got a single reliable striker and once we go behind we're toast.

I think we'll be in very serious trouble if we don't dig out a win very soon.

Suffering since 1978.

What exactly are you basing this on?

Just cos he's a bit quiet?

Not suggesting everything's going swimmingly, but that's quite an accusation to fling.

Comparing 22/23 Sunderland with that, in effect, PL, Newcastle team is a nonsense as well!

Millwall deliver more pain, and a cautionary tale to woeful QPR - Report on 10:55 - Feb 13 by Antti_Heinola

Laird would have been by the halfway line for the first goal, as he was the 'out' ball, quite clearly, for most of the game when Seny had it. Blaming him for somehow not managing to cover 40 yards in about 2 seconds after we stupidly gave the ball away seems a bit perverse to me, but there we go.

Otherwise, I thought he tried his nuts off. Simnilarly with Chair, who had to put in 3 superb balls before finally someone actually fkn converted one and was the only player until that point to even have a shot (one admittedly the worst shot I've seen in my life) apart from Lowe's effort. In fact, apart from that one time when he failed to play in Paal in the first half (ands that shot) he had a good game.

Our problem was more three CMs who either prefer to sit or like to get forward but can't anymore. So when Paal and Laird went forward and looked for a pass, they only ever had the option up the line. If that wasn't on, they'd look up into the enormous space in the middle to see absolutely no one there. It's a bit of a strange thing that Tim, who does actually break those lines, has been dropped the moment we play a formation that suits him better.

last paragraph is where our weakness is going forard

Field, SJ and Dozzell just dont get forward and ever take a chance to get involved in the box... even at the end of the match when we are sending men forward, dozzell and field were never really committing to get forward (tbf: field was getting a bit higher up the pitch in the second half)... we are not expecting them to finish off chances off late runs into the box like frank lampard, but just their sheer presence will draw defenders and create space for others in the box.... chair gets criticized for not passing the ball early enough but whats the point when theres only one person to aim for?

i really think critchley deserves some blame for the tactics, too

first, we tried the three left footed central midfielders under beale and it just doesnt work... dozzell was playing on the right in the first half.... and given his body shape and positioning when collecting the ball, its no wonder he passed backwards so often

but also- did we really need 3 central midfielders on saturday? millwall was pretty direct and playing over the top rather than through the midfield... so did we need to pack that area with 3 midfielders? i think it wouldve been a match to use tim in a box to box role where he could defend but also get forward

Agree with 1,3 and 4.

Don't agree with 2, but a 1 goal defeat seemed about 'right' to me, but can't agree it "flattered" us either.

All opinions in the end.

Or 3-6, or 0-0 or 1-3 or 1-0.......... and so on

Bit pointless adding up their chances and calling them goals and ignoring all ours?

OK 'all' was a bit generous, but 2 shots of Illias and Lowe's were as close as Watmore's in the 2nd half.

Seny had a couple of easy saves 2nd half, they had the early chance, we had a couple of scrambles and they had one 2nd half where their own players got in each others way.

So yes they had maybe 3/4 "chances" they could have scored, but so did we.

So I stand by what I said, no point counting Watmore's 'near miss' and not counting our 3.

Quite.

We've had four long range shots off target of decreasing quality.
We've tried to punch the ball in from 15 yards out.
We've scored one header and sent a goalkeeper up for an injury time corner.
Their goalkeeper has made zero saves all afternoon.

I am staggered people are still willing to make excuses for this team and pretend it's not as bad as all that. We have won one game in 16. Cardiff, Huddersfield, Fleetwood, no wins. Seven home games, no wins.

Some of you are far more tolerant than me that's all I can say.

Chair's two that were as close as Watmore's 2nd half effort as was Jamal's, plus the almighty scramble in their box - yes they had one of those as well - but either they are both 'chances' or they are both not.

Not sure what the previous 16 have to do with counting 'chances' - where were all the saves from Seny?

He had two catches that you and I would save and that was it.

Even a cursory glance at the BBC stats will tell you that's not true - 11 Millwall shots, five on target, two goals, one goal disallowed.

Don't think Pinner's making excuses, just reasonably pointing out saying it could have been 5-1 is just a tiny bit silly. Had our defenders not gifted them two goals, Seny wouldn't have had a save of note to make either.

Yeh I get that. I'm not saying we should have lost 5-1 either. I'm generally at the end of my tether atm. But I am definitely done with this "fine margins" stuff at the moment. The margins are vast. We're miles off and have been miles off for weeks.

I'm so down about it all that my wife may go in my place tomorrow.

I post this firstly to further hammer home the point about the chances Millwall had relative to ours on Saturday, but also just to say look at the fcking state of us in this. That attempt at a header, two midfielders pulling out of a tackle, that defending from our back four... pathetic stuff. The absolute state of us.

You would have thought, especially with Millwall's 1st goal that professional footballers understood the defensive concept of following the man, rather than chasing the ball on mass. We watched open mouthed in right side of upper loft the amount of time and space Watmore had to slot it home. It has been like that all season on the right of defence at home.

Maybe I missed it but in all this describing and counting of chances I've not seen the Dunne big chance close in and bang in front at the death which he belted over the bar, mentioned either in the report or comments.

We certainly weren't great but absolutely deserved a point, and there weren't only negatives in the game described In overload here but some postives to take too as Antii has mentioned.

Martin and Armstrong certainly gave me some hope that we may be more potent In front of goal in the coming games if they can stay fit. Chair slinging in some decent crosses from the left wing when Martin came on and gave him a target, rather than trying to do far too much himself, losing the ball and putting a number of speculative shots from distance well off target earlier. Laird receiving with his head and controlling the many accurate aerial Dieng long clearances out wide right in the absence of Dykes or Martin 1st half in particular. Not seen him given that role much before but it worked well. Both Dozzell and Johansen is probably one left footed player too many in the central midfield but Dozzell showed his passing ability again. I'd prefer to see Tim playing instead of one of them.when we play 3 in central midfield.
