I actually met a deep water diver yesterday who not only held me up for half an hour he terrified the thought of even shallow diving (cant swim so it was always out ).
If you panic and start struggling then race to the surface to rip the gear off you will simply die he claims .The bends he called it and if you cannot get pure oxygen its very bad.
He has a contact in the field who does under water body recovry and I ran out of the building before he got into that story .
I struggle not to drown in the shower so thats my mindset on that underwater activity just pure fcuking madness IMO

A lot of alpha male guff spoken by the adventure sports jocks, John. They never seem to get sick of it.

As far as I know the bends are only an issue on deep dives. It's a serious thing to happen but on any instructed scuba dive for beginners with licenced divers it should not be an issue.

Open water swimming .
I like to be able to see the bottom and ideally be able to touch it within 2 seconds . I like the water to be warmed either by blazing sunshine or a machine ..

Went to Malta as a youngster and swam out to a small island in bay with a local girl, when I got back a local fisherman shook his head at me, so I enquired as to the nature of my mistake. Then he showed me the biggest Great White tooth I've ever seen and he pointed to the island.

Skiing.

My Mrs has been trying to get me to go skiing for years. Fvck that!
I’m a clumsy oaf at the best of times & my balance is rubbish. Only been on a skateboard once and I ended up in A&E.
Why would anyone want to go down a fvcking freezing cold mountain wearing a couple of planks on their feet? And pay a fvcking fortune for the privilege. Shell out for all the gear too.
Aah they say, but you’re missing the point. It’s all about the apres ski. There are lovely bars and there’s a good atmosphere.
Well, yes that might be true and I’ve been to a few ski resorts in the Alps during the summer. And yes the bars are lovely, and I like the atmosphere.
So why not just go and do that in the summer then. Where you can transport yourself from one bar to another using the normal method of walking as nature intended.
And what about those fvcking ski lifts, fvck that too.
You wouldn’t get on something as flimsy as that when the fairground comes to town. So why the fk would you do it when the drop below is ever bigger and covered in freezing cold ice.

At least my youngest son agrees with me. So if the Mrs suggests it these days I can say, why don’t you just go my dear, I’ll stay at home to look after him.
Brian McCarthy, this might well be the best thing about having kids.

Technically you can get the bends at 20ft or less, but it’s definitely far less common.

My Mrs treated me to a week’s holiday on a liveaboard boat in the Red Sea for my 40th birthday back in 2000 and it was the best holiday I’ve ever had.Two or three dives a day interspersed with free swimming off the side of the boat during the downtime.
One dive we were diving over a deep hole on the sea floor. As a PADI open water diver I was limited to 18m depth, but I was so obsessed with watching the sharks all around underneath me that I got distracted. When I looked at my dive watch it was showing 43m.Did I panic? You f@cking bet,and I had to surface as quickly as I safely could, which annoyed my dive buddy quite a lot as he had to surface with me.That put me off a bit and certainly helped my concentration levels on future dives.

The last dive on the final day was spent in about 6m just swimming in amongst shoals of fish everywhere for about an hour.A brilliant holiday, but I’ve never dived since because I couldn’t face the freezing cold water in the uk after that.

Things have moved on so much now with different systems of scuba gear that I’d probably have to retrain to be able to go now.It was a real struggle carrying all the gear to get into the water but it was fantastic once I was in the water and virtually weightless.

Each to there own I guess but I could never climb mountains or have anything to do with heights.

I remember hearing guys talking about getting "narcs" or something like that in a hostel when I was backpacking. Similar to Bends I think but possibly not as serious. You become disoriented and almost dream like but apparently its ok as long as you realise it is happening and can snap out of it.

That was it for me, decision made to never do this stuff.

Did this with Mrs Holy (she loves all this sort of stuff) a couple of years ago... Great experience but I will never do it again... Also I don't think I have ever sweated as much as doing this...

That looks properly mental - I'd definitely be up for that. Looks like GoApe on an epic scale.

Tall buildings and I wet myself. The glass bridge thing in China would break me - odd thing phobias. Defy logic by definition.

Me too, took it up in my mid 40’s, far too late to be anything other than competent, my daughter on the other hand was 8 and is now a qualified ski instructor!
The most fun you can have with your clothes on!!

Yes, the island of Fifla, just across from the Blue Grotto, was at one point the site of the biggest ever great white catch.

My wife is Maltese, and she is always very excited when anyone mentions Malta in any context, so I'll tell her about this and then demand a cup of tea as a reward.

Same.

Even with all the safety equipment I'd still have a heart attack.

People who run their own businesses.

I mean kudos to you if you're one of those people - sounds nice in principle but the amount of stress and time involved, and do you ever really get to enjoy the fruits of your labour anyway?

Much as it's a pain working for The Man but I feel fortunate I can shut down the laptop at 5pm and forget about work till the morning.

I’m with you there, mate. The funniest holidays I’ve ever had, and no raging hangovers the next day. Seeing a mate ski into a pine tree, fall back with a cone embedded into his forehead will not be topped. The most exhilarating sport I’ve ever had a go at.

Had a go at scuba diving once - what an incredible, but scary experience. Twenty feet away from loads of grey tipped reef sharks. There was only one boss group down there.

I’d probably have a go at both again, given the chance, but you can leave anything high that isn’t enclosed out of it. Not going down no pot holes, either.

Also - really cold showers. Not for me, I’m not SAS material.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?
