Listening to the commentary I thought - where is it?

North London to most, but its North West London really, so that would make it West London, but north a bit.

Or, is it Middlesex?

Poll: Thank God The Seaons Over.

I'm certainly showing my age by saying that I remember my secondary school books (Copland Sec Mod, Wembley, Middlesex) having the Middlesex County Council logo.

Can't recall but I suspect my old Sec Mod school, John Kelly in Neasden, could well have had the MCC logo too.

Middlesex has a history that spans well over a thousand years, to 704 AD - the Middlesex County Council was created in 1889 and abolished in 1965 - Parliament has confirmed, on numerous occasions, that the administrative County of Middlesex was abolished but not Middlesex.

A curious argument, if not an outrightly foolish one.

Counties are only ever political or administrative entities (as are nation states). Middlesex has no offices, no officials, no laws, no jurisdiction, no authority. I'll concede it does nominally have a cricket team, just about. It very much exists only in history, regardless of what a handful of whimsical MPs with too much time on their hands may have once subscribed to. And I doubt you can cite any law declaring that Middlesex exists because of course it does not.

You may regret its passing, but like the parrot and the Roman Empire, it most certainly has passed.

Wembley is in Middlesex and always has been, still has an out of London post code. It was brought in to London when the council was merged with LB Willesden in 1965 to form Brent Council, pissing off Willesden residents. They were all rich nobs the north side of the River Brent and North Circular Road.

Top one Will, it has a out of London Postcode well said

The Office for National Statistics lists Middlesex as an historic county in its Index of Place Names, so if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

The key word there is historic.

North West London for me

My mum is still angry that they merged Wembley (considered posh) to Willesden (not considered posh) in the 1960s to form the London Borough of Brent, and blames Wembley's decline on that.

Having lived 200m north of the north circ for 22 years, I also considered my address "Wembley, Middx, with a Harrow postcode" although technically Middx didn't exist

To confuse matters more...I give you Greater London ... which is an adminstrative area that contains all 32 London boroughs including Brent and therefore Wembley and reflects the urban sprawl that London has become.

Post codes are just that...post codes... they belong to the Royal Mail I believe, which is a private company and has no bearing on actual borders.

Typical Wembley, fur coat and no knickers. We’re not just Willesden, we’re Kilburn and Harlesden too.

Fair point. No argument from me.
Willesden, Kilburn and Harlesden gone up in the world since then. Wembley hasn't fared so well.

Not forgetting Neasden, Cricklewood, Kensal Rise, Queens Park, Dollis Hill and everything else north of the Harrow Road, east of the A5 and south of the Brent.

I was born in Wembley but now I live in Willesden I despise their suburban mores.

Although where I was born was annexed by Ealing in the 90s so perhaps that makes me officially a West Londoner now. Or will I always be a Middlesexer?

Geographical identity is all a load of bollocks really.

Regarding geographical boundary shifting, I wonder if someone on here can help me out? Born 1963 in Park Royal hospital - was that Ealing or Brent, or simply Middlesex?

Many thanks.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

The London Borough of Brent was created on 1st April 1965, so in 1963 you were born in the County Borough of Willesden in Middlesex, as was I 13 years earlier.

From The Cockney Garden:

"Oh it really is a werry pretty garden
And 'Endon to the westward could be seen
And by clinging to the chimbley
You could see across to Wembley
If it wasn't for the 'ouses in between."
