New goalie for development squad 18:38 - Jan 8 with 1458 viewsWilkinswatercarrier

Welcome Joel Halliday. A rarity in today's game, signed at 19yo but no Academy history, just Sunday morning footie and college.

Is there an Island of Superbly-named Goalkeepers we send a boat out to occasionally?

I think he's used that one before. Needs to check his settings to allow original content only.

Call me out but we've already got Nardi, Walsh and Sheppard for the 1st team. Even if latter is on a short term deal.
In the DS we have Matty Salamon, who everybody seems to rate highly, and Ciaran Clark.
Do we really need another keeper on the books?

We are the first club in the football league to have a goalkeeping academy.

Half of them continually get loaned out to higher and higher rated clubs and then we sell them all to La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and the ones that are the flops can go to Chelsea on 8 year contracts.

It worked on football manager, so there we go, job done !!!

Or perhaps the other plan, is to cover potential injuries, as we once had seven goalkeepers in one season, so we are now fully covered, if things go Pete Tong !!!

Either way, it's genius !!!

And Murphy Cooper on loan at Stevenage. It does seem a bit excessive.

I'm sure there's a fighter squadron somewhere in which their grandfathers were stationed during WW2.

The truth is no-one knows if a goalie is going to make it or not, they're a strange breed who are very unpredictable, until they're playing regularly in the first team. There are simply too many variables. That goes for other sports too, listen to anyone in ice hockey for instance and they'll tell it's a complete mystery. That's why football clubs sign more goalkeepers than any other position at a young age and then see who comes through.

Exactly, it's a development squad, you sign players to develop. We have a clutch of them at the minute, but some of them won't work out, and you won't keep hold of all the ones that are good - keepers don't get rotated the same way outfielders do, so if the first choice is fit and playing well you aren't getting a look in. Shepperd types are happy to just be in the squad and show up to training and occasionally make the bench, but you'd hope most of these lads want to play regularly, and some of them will decide that if Nardi and Walsh are ahead of them they're going to go elsewhere and do that rather than waiting around.

I think that Brighton have been successful in signing a number of young (English?) goalkeepers and developing them/loaning them out to the Championship. I was reading the other day that they own 3 of the 5 goalkeepers that are Under 23 y.o. who have appeared in either the Premier League or Championship.

If he’s good and makes the grade that’s great and what a find. If he’s not he can run his contract down and leave on a Bosman’s Halliday.

Can you see what I did there?

I’ll get me coat.
