To save polluting the TV thread, I thought I'd start a thread for the films we've seen this year.

I saw A Real Pain the other day and it's a really nicely put together piece by Jesse Eisenberg. It unpeels like an onion, with each layer getting closer to the central pint. Good film.

Babygirl could have been so much better. Nicole Kidman does well but it all feels a bit 'off'.

Rewatched Anatomy of a Fall the other day - brilliant.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

went to see Bugonia last night...
Purposely kept away from the reviews as it obviously has a lot to live up to after the amazing 'Poor thing' by director Yorgos Lanthimos and main protagonist, Emma Stone.
It's a fantastic, surreal plotline that toys with the recent covid type conspiracies with Jesse Plemmons playing a you tube educated theorist ably assisted by his impressionable autistic cousin, who believes the world is being run by aliens.
It goes down some very dark holes and demonstrates the underbelly of america's detached outsiders, whilst questioning the motives of big pharma.
The repartee between Stone and Plemmons is superb and almost effortless, as they take turns to switch the power base of their situation.
Thoroughly enjoyable, if a little predictable towards the end - a strong 8/10 for me.

Bugonia is really enjoyable and Plemmons and Stone are outstanding - didn't realise Mom was Alicia Silverstone.

Predicted the twist but still entertaining.

Which previous Lanthimos film is it most comparable to? I've really enjoyed some of his stuff (Sacred Deer, Dog Tooth, Lobster) but also found some of his stuff quite boring (Poor Things, Favourite).

I'm terms of mood, probably Dogtooth, but it is it's own film.

Sisu Road to Revenge is brilliantly good fun.

The new Running Man is very good - Edgar Wright is a great director.

One Battle After Another is very good. Maybe a little too long. Reminded me of No Country For Old Men.

Smells like a trout farm in here

Thanks to those who recommended One Battle After Another. Hadn't really been aware of it but went to see it because everyone seemed to rate it highly and really enjoyed it.

Saw Nuremberg recently. Enjoyed the psychological drama between the two leads and overall thought it was very good. However, there is some real concentration camp footage shown in the middle of the film as part of the trial evidence which was really difficult to watch.

Just caught this. Agree, it's fairly engaging and good fun, although could probably do with being 20 minutes shorter, it did start to drag somewhere in the second act. Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are great. It captures something contemporary about the demise of objective reality, loss of faith in institutions etc. Although I've not yet seen it I can imagine this makes a good double bill with Eddington from what I've heard. People have talked about the "rug pull" ending, but agreed, I think you can see where it's going to an extent.

I watched it yesterday and liked it too. Emma Stone and Jessie Plemons were excellent in it. I can't imagine watching it ever again but it was good.

Third film I've watched recently that had a tag of 'comedy' on it and absolutely wasn't.

Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

Just watched It Ends. Saw some festival reviews really rating it. It's not streaming at the moment but you can find it online.

Having watched Hallow Road recently, and also The Long Walk... Feels like I'm stuck in a subgenre - roads, existential dread, mostly interior car shots

This is impressive, especially for a debut film. Naturalistic dialogue, and the tone is really well managed. Dread, hopelessness, some scary parts, but humour too. There's an "oh my god" gut punch gag towards the end that I really enjoyed.

Will definitely be looking out for other films by this guy Alexander Ullom. Quite an achievement for his first film, could have easily been a mess.

For balance, my wife absolutely hated it, said it was exquisitely boring

Tron Ares is forgettable. Run of the mill film that wastes a decent cast.

I liked it but I could see where it was going and was very disappointed that it went there.

Like you, I enjoyed the performances and the sense of dread. But I'm getting fked off with these lazy writers.

Really? I was fine with the ending, I can't really think of an alternative that would have worked. I guess it's a film about the journey rather than the ending, in every sense!

Nah, I'm tired of this trope of setting up a difficult situation and then just leaving it without sorting or explaining anything.

Ever since Predators I can't be dealing with films that don't end.

Just watched Edgar Wrights The Running Man. Would presume its much closer to the Stephen King book than the Arnie film. I enjoyed it. Very different to the previous film.

I didn't like it. I like the Arnie film a lot and I've read the book and so was up for them sticking closer to it but the film had issues for me.

The first 45 minutes or so were alright. It was building up nicely and the tone was set well. More drama than comedy but then Michael Cera's character turns up and the film gives up on the drama and just goes completely stupid.

But then the whole ending (everything after Cera) just threw out any kind of logic or realism and just did whatever it wanted without explanation. I turned round to the missus and said 'well, this has unraveled' because that's how it felt.

I don't even know how you write something that messy.

Film was far too long also.

Other half picked the film last weekend. "No Korean films, nothing weird, I want to watch Sorry, Baby". Ok fine, stick it on, oh - it's A24!

Really good film, found out afterwards the lead Eva Victor, who is fantastic, also directed it, and it's her debut - very impressive

It's a film about trauma. Kermode said he thought the tone is too jarring in places given the subject matter, but for me (and from the reviews, most others) this is the film's strength. The humour and naturalistic way that people behave really grounds it. There's a scene immediately after "the bad thing" in the hospital that captures this perfectly.

There's another kind of incidental scene on the face of it between Victor and the owner of a sandwich bar that I found really beautiful. The subtle physical acting, the intimacy at a distance between two strangers. Very affecting.

Solid 8/10, and will be keeping an eye out for her next film.

I was made to watch Four Weddings and Funeral last night : (

Looking forward to watching.

I rewatched the film 28 years later in preparation for the release of the new one in January, and found it to be EVEN better on repeat viewings.

ATRM did 12 Angry Men the other week so rewatched that over the weekend - quite brilliant.

Now you see me: No you shouldn't. Awful. Truly awful.

Zootropolis 2 is very good. Not to the level of the first one, but sloth-based humour makes a return and is very funny.

Off to see Nuremberg later – not sure about Russell Crowe as Goering.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end

I'd be interested in what you think of Nuremberg. I thought Crowe played Goering well.

I listened to their episode on Empire Strikes Back last week. Always the same, I tell myself that I will end up wanting to rewatch whatever they're covering, no matter how unlikely that seems beforehand... Surely I'm not going to rewatch a star wars film I've watched a thousand times.... And yet here we are , me looking for a window to put it on when everyone's in bed
