Pat Nevin's The Accidental Footballer 14:40 - Jan 19 with 4276 viewsQPRcounsellor

Anyone read this? Over halfway through and it's very good.

Obviously lots about Chelsea but it's brilliantly written and he's just mentioned the 6-0 defeat at Loftus Road.

Very interesting and a top bloke.

It is indeed a very good read!
As for all the Terry discussions, a lot is fuelled by what we see in the papers, he’s obviously had a few issues, that’s put him on the front pages! I met him once and he was a decent bloke, who took time to speak with every child and have photos taken at a children’s hospital. No press, not organised, something he did in his own time. He always loved Loftus Road, always a great atmosphere!

"what I will say is I suspect that there's every chance that he'll be a phenomenal manager and if I had to choose anybody who I've come across in the game over the years that would be as close to a stick-in as a success, it's him."

Still waiting Pat....

I see we are at the defending John Terry stage of aggy discourse.

Yeah, Pat Nevin is one thing, with him it's just guilt by association, but I'm not having John Terry as a decent bloke for one second.

If he'd played for us I'd say the same too. Joey. Barton played for us and is a turd all the same.

Who said he was a 'decent bloke''? It's just more black and white thinking, exaggeration, and caricature. What I've pointed out is that no one here who has an 'opinion' on Terry (in a culture where people think just because they have a hole in their face, their voice is as valid as anyone else) (i) knows him as Nevin does, (ii) who (Nevin, that is) has described how/why he changed, or at least complicated, his view of him and (ii) who (still Nevin) is a decent guy - if apparently somehow too trendy for one or two - confronted Chelsea fans' racism in the 1970s when I bet no one else here was sitting down at a table with the NF or putting their head dangerously above the parapet.

Suddenly, apparently, that makes one an apologist for Hitler!

It's liberal fascism at its most disingenous, and utterly embarrassing to what is normally, one or two goons excepted, an intelligent messageboard.

Poll: Keep our 12 game pts return going, and it's a 73 pt finish! Playoffs?

Good for you, sir, for pointing up how, in the words of Billy Bragg, there are two (if not two hundred and two) sides to every story, as any decent journo knows.

Glad it's a good read, Counsellor.

Having thought about it, I'm still going to give it a miss but thanks for the recommendation anyway.

Hi Brian, I remember you mentioned that you surf, have you read ‘Barbarian Days: A Life In Surfing’ by William Finnegan? It’s top of my reading list.

Regarding Pat Nevin, I don’t understand how someone with his views would stick around a club like Chelsea?

Hi Joe,

Yes, I have read it. Lovely book, he writes about his childhood and teenage years in particular with real beauty and feeling. Gorgeous stuff.

Enjoy!

I like listening to him on the radio, he comes across as an intelligent and articulate bloke with a decent taste in music. He really knows his bands, music has been a big influence throughout his life.

Will forgive the Chelsea allegiances, as the club is obviously a big part of his history.

Ooh - things like 'There are no subtle nuances to John Terry. He is a racist, bully, greedy, egotistical, adulterous scumbag'. Comparing him (and Nevin's intelligent/informed/nuanced view of him) to Hitler liking animals. Little things like that.

So, I'm not allowed to have a different opinion to you then?

If I ever met John Terry I'd happily repeat anything I've said here. I've never understood his hold in the football community.

Even Rio waited till he retired before forming an opinion on the Anton issue, absolutely insane.

You are Nevin are both clowns for attempting to defend Terry.

Dearie me! With 'counter-argument' like yours, what price argument (or even the meanings of words like 'hypocrite')?

Not a counter argument, more a statement of fact

Hi Joe, here is your answer £££££ same reason Raheem Sterling signed for them after he was racially abused by their fans, you know the type , they don,t let black people on the train when at a game in Paris. I could go on but some people on here who seem to be apologists for JT might get upset

Aaah the black & white world of the internet, where nuance and shades of grey have been consigned to the dustbin of history.

I enjoyed watching Nevin as a player, tho I was glad when he went to Everton as it was then easier to appreciate him. I've also managed to appreciate Charlie Cooke, Gianfranco Zola and one or two others who've played for that lot. I do that while still having a far greater dislike for Chelsea than any other club.

I also enjoy him as a pundit, and respect both his politics and his musical taste. I find his 'blind spot' on both Terry and being on Abramovich's pay roll very disappointing...but hey, find me a football fan without several blind spots regarding their club (tho I'm with Cider on the lowlife that is Barton, I felt embarrassed / offended in equal measure when he played for us).

The book's been recommended to me, I'll probably get round to reading it, and just mutter 'tw@t' whenever he speaks well of Terry...
