You make valid points and I would only disagree in terms of the timeframe. I would argue we were not awful until just before York scored (just after Waller made two attempts to claim a Pearce shot).
We started with urgency, played quick triangles, played through their midfield (Ayinde in particular) and got crosses in from both flanks that actually caused Male issues.
The problem is, we didn't score.
After York scored, it all changed. We stopped doing any of the above (we couldn't get a cross off the ground) and York's middle three, Felix especially, took over the show. From that point on we looked toothless and lacked anybody (Bird) who could hold the ball up. Allied to that, we made it very easy for York to advance and shoot almost at will with cheap turnovers of possession - and it was unacceptable.
The real issue was that there was nothing on the bench that could really help us shake things up. We could've tried a three in midfield but Weston seems to be on the naughty step, so that wasn't going to happen - and Mitchell at the minute is not the answer as the tip of the spear. We would've needed Rodney there to try a two up front with Henderson.
Losing Waller only compounds the misery.
I don't think Waller is a big loss. His distribution is atrocious, he's vertically challenged and doesn't command his box and his positional sense isn't great neither, been caught out several times with long range shots when he's too far out of his goal. He's a decent shot stopper but prone to errors. He's been OK i think and better than some we've had but i don't think he's anything special and certainly replaceable. I prefer a big goalkeeper and i think we could do to sign one permanently next season for continuity.

But if he's out for any length of time right now, we only have Kelly. So he is a big loss between now and the end of this current season unless he can be replaced before the end of this week.

In that respect then yes i agree. He will be replaced though i would have thought.

While on paper we have dropped eight of the last nine points in reality the large margin of defeats have whittled away what was an outstanding goal difference, in effect an extra point. It is still bigger than most teams around us but not by much…one or two more shellackings and we would be a further point down in essence.
If only we had Yorks budget all would be well!

Very stark difference with McNulty and BBM - one currently has us in the play-offs and the other led us to relegation. Allowing the latter to rumble on, especially with the secret contract extension, proved terminal.
As for what McNulty says after a match, I'm not sure how much of it he actually genuinely means. There are definitely examples where he should know better by now. Perhaps if he was asked more pertinent questions, there may be better, more genuine responses, but you will never get that from an in-house media team and we no longer have a decent local press to force such issues.
Could the Trust and or Advisory board not being tasked with asking some more taxing questions?

The most telling difference between us and the decent teams in this division is how much more frequently they take their opportunities.
How many times have we said this season that we’ve played OK up until a team’s first goal, only for us to concede at the first sign of any sort of attack?
The reality is that we aren’t direct enough and are very easy to play against. This is why the possession stats and way we “control” the game is largely irrelevant. Teams work us out due to our slow, pedestrian style and then hit us on the break after we inevitably misplace a pass or make some sort of individual error.
And teams also shoot when they get the opportunity. Something else Jim seems to have coached out of the players.
I would normally say that Jim is unlikely to change the style of play that he currently employs. However, we did have that mini upturn of form where we actually started on the front foot and attacked teams from the off. The fact that this yielded better results makes it all the more baffling that we have reverted back to type. I feel that the only way we can be successful this season is to bring back that style of football.
It begs the question as to why we changed our approach in the first place. Was it due to pressure from the fans? Was it the signing of Bird that facilitated this change? And why have we reverted back to a style of play that quite clearly wasn’t working?

I think last night was my final game of the season, I’m not even interested in going to Wembley to watch the turgid crap that is currently on show..
Beckwith - needs a rest, preferably for 2 months. Mitchell - I’d rather play my dead grandmother up top. Gilmour/East - show some bollox, get stuck in and show that you care. Wingbacks - pointless, change the formation. Buyabu/TAR/Tas are wingers, play them as wingers and instruct them to cross/shoot on sight. McNulty - tactically inept, needs to go.

I'm glad we agree on the relevance of the moniker.
It’s a shame you’re now staying home as it means you will have also missed our four recent wins too. That’s the risk taken when staying away, I guess. It’s any fan’s prerogative though, so fair play.
Each and every game has it flaws. Some costly, others not so. Some even collectively frustrate over the season. I’m not denying that and I’ve written screeds on what I personally would like to see done differently - more urgency in the final third every game and not just in some, being the primary.
And as I have said already on this thread, last night's performance and result are unacceptable.
But the fact remains, right now, we are still on track to compete in the play-offs and a cup semi-final for a Wembley appearance. Should neither of those things ultimately come to pass, I’ll add my own dissent on the matter.
I booked my ticket (website issues notwithstanding) for the Spennymoor game as soon as they went on general sale; also reserved a hotel in London should we reach the final (with full refund option). These outlays take resources
Many of us face the same question. I'm not badly off at all, but have other commitments (as most have) and therefore have to be a bit careful these days where the finances are allocated. I simply decided that watching McNulty-ball wasn't high enough on the list at least some of the time. So no, it's not a shame i missed last night, but a necessary reckoning which would be different if i was enthused about our football
For me, you can multiply the citizens of Rochdale x thousands. Or, 5000, even
That's the major driver of my thinking, and conclusions, which are that whilst it would be stupid to sack McNulty now, the train of thought by the Ogdens must surely be slowly turning towards the longer term
What is McNulty ball? Is it Ebbsfleet, Oldham and York at home or is it Yeovil and Woking at home and Aldershot away? Jim referred to total options in the past which suggests an inbuilt plan B, C and D.

It's just a catch-all term, james, whose greatest features are lethargy, inconsistency and inability to adapt during games (quoting a couple of exceptions doesn't wash)

If there had only been a couple of exceptions we wouldn't be on the position we are now. That being said had there not be so many examples of what you refer to we would be in a superior position.
'Only happy when you've got it often makes you miss the journey'
Watched the match in a public space, so I had it on silent—and honestly, it was weird. It looked slow and static, almost like they were playing netball (you know, can't move with the ball).
That first goal? Pure laziness. No excuses. And before anyone says, “Well, it’s a lot of games”—we’re not exactly playing high-intensity, all-out attack football, are we?
What’s truly baffling is that just three games ago we looked sharp. Since Oldham, it’s like everything’s fallen off a cliff.
Never seen anything like it.

I mean we are so lucky to still be in that 7th spot. Watched the Alty highlights v Solihull earlier and they were very unfortunate not to win. Went ahead with an absolute Worldy from Linney (try and watch it - its a thing of beauty). Then Solihull got the softest penalty and a very soft red card for an Alty player too.

Probably the recent results in games against teams we are allegedly competing with in the hope of competing against in the playoffs, would suggest that we are someway off being at that level and at best we might qualify as being in the position of being "the best of the rest" in what is with the exception of a couple of teams a pretty average league. If by some quirk of chance we get into the playoffs can't see us getting beyond the first game away at whoever it might be.

Well we drew with Halifax and Oldham and beat Gateshead and Altrincham. The obvious elephant in the room is Jay Bird - with him joining and being able to 'rest' Mitchell it changes our play so much and we became so much better upfront. If Bird had been fit we may have even taken an early lead last night and the game changes so much - but we'll never know.

We scored nearly 60 goals in all comps prior to Bird joining.

True but we have been capable of scoring goals
Well I've seen enough games without him in the team to know which I prefer. Just hope he can play again this season especially if its an extended one. Jim was quite vague about his injury and wasn't really pressed to elaborate any further - if its a metatarsal then he probably wont play for us again.
Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10
We have scored 52 in the league with with the exception of Halifax (46) is the lowest in the top 8. York have scored 22 more goals and Barnet 29 more. Their defensive records are also better with fewer goals conceded.
My fear is that the model for a promotion winning team (Barnet) is not in the managers DNA and he will recruit the type of player he signs to fit into his philosophy and formation. How many of our players would get into the Barnet or York teams?
An earlier thread singled out some individuals and whilst the players must take some responsibility it is probably unfair to judge until we know how they are being coached tactically. Beckwith looks a shadow of the player he was earlier in the season.
For example, Gilmour and East are both good players but will be overrun in a two man midfield by better teams such as York with a more compact structure. They need support which is not forthcoming from our wingbacks.
Our forwards made Cam John and his fellow defenders look like class act last night. Their performance was toothless. This is not all down to Kairo as he is presented with relatively few chances by his team mates
It is clear that the manager needs to change whilst there is all to play for. Looking forward he needs to recruit a different breed of player to get us out of this league sooner rather than later. Jim referred to financial clout in his post match analysis but this is only part of the story, for example Felix and Armstrong who were both star performers last night were I believe free transfers.
So our recruitment hasn't been great in terms of personnel or formation. We have not had our own 1st choice keeper for some time now? The standard of this league probably dictates 3-4 good quality signings, a core of journeymen and a sprinkling of younger loan signings.
In the short term, I hope we can sign a keeper and a forward to pep things up.

Amazes me how people seem to forget who was the manager of Rochdale AFC at the point we got relegated out of the football league.
Now granted, the damage had pretty much been done by the time JM took over but did anyone witness any fire, grit or determination in those final performances of that season? You could see from every team selection and interview that JM - this great loyal servant of the club - had already accepted our fate and wasn’t putting up any fight. That’s why I’ve always been against his permanent appointment. I had accepted us going down, what I couldn’t accept is going down so pathetically and JM’s role in that won’t be forgotten by me.
If by some miracle we get promoted this season then fair enough, I’ll eat my words and JM will have every right to crow at the doubters.
But there seems almost no likelihood whatsoever of that happening because here we are - two years on - with JM’s teams still showing the same absence of fire, grit and determination. The exact qualities you need to win trophies, to win crucial play off games. To, you know, GET PROMOTED.
Why anyone thinks this man should be entrusted with 3 years to carry on is verging on the definition of madness - we’ll be playing exactly the same in the future as we do now yet some of you will be expecting a different outcome. It’s time for a change.

Are you seriously suggesting that McNulty actually has a plan b, plan c etc. Wonder why he has never used them? We all know he hasn’t, he’s proved it time again with his inflexible rigid approach to the formation of the team and like for like substitutions.
For clarity McNulty ball is slow pedestrian tedious pointless possession football with little or no end product on most occasions. Even when we win we are regularly still rubbish to watch.
I’ve only ever left a game early once before this season in 15 years. The football/McNulty ball on offer now has meant I’ve left both of the last 2 home games with 20 minutes to go having stomached all I can of the inept shite on offer. I’ve also chosen to miss the home league games games against Oldham, Tamworth and Barnet despite having a season ticket and being able to go along with not bothering to spend extra and buy a ticket for the Altrincham cup game at home which I also elected to miss despite being able to go.
I’ve bought a ticket for Spennymoor game which I probably now won’t bother using and have already made alternative plans for this weekend so won’t be attending Aldershot either. To be honest I am seriously considering not attending any of the remaining games this season despite having the season ticket and being able to go. I’ve also already made the decision not to renew my season ticket for next season because I’m not prepared to watch anymore of what’s on offer.
To sum up McNulty ball is boring to watch and is going to cost the club a lot of lost fans and revenue. The club can forget project 5000, if they want to be realistic try selling 1500 season tickets for next season, I reckon they are going to find it a struggle.
Sorry to be going over old ground but the 3-year plan is for us to be in the efl in that period of time. This season's target is playoffs We've not been told if that's the seventh place. Second place semi-finals or winning the playoffs

That's a bit unfair about the period after he took over in March 2023.
We played a further eight games in that season, winning three, drawing three and losing two. So, 12 points out of a possible 24. (50%, compared to Bentley before him picking up 26% of the available points)
We were excellent in beating AFC Wimbledon away and in scoring four at home to both Walsall and Sutton. We were also very 'gritty and determined' in coming from behind to earn a draw at promotion-chasing Mansfield, who missed out on the play-offs on goal difference.
We struggled at home to Tranmere, yet managed to show the grit and determination needed to come from 2-0 down to earn a draw.
The worst performances (and losses) were against Bradford and Stockport, who both reached the play-offs.
