The team for Wednesday I imagine was picked before yesterday’s game… 05:58 - Nov 2 with 3578 viewsHammersmithR

This is the frustrating thing with the manager. He won’t admit it, but irrespective of yesterday he will already have in mind his team for Wednesday and Saturday. So I assume it will be…

1. Nardi
2. Dunne
3. Norrington-Davies
4. Mbengue
5. Morrison
6. Varane
7. Smyth
8. Madsen
9. Saito
10. Frey
11. Burrell

I’m in the camp that JS needs to know what is best team is and play it. He’s constantly making so many changes which is to the detriment of the players building up playing together and getting used to patterns of play etc. Seems some players are constantly rotated but Dunne and Madsen for example always play.

100% agree with this.
I thought Julien would have realised the importance of playing and keeping a settled side together for as much as possible, by now.
He hasn't, and his pathalogical fear of 3 game weeks, will stunt any real advancement our team could, and would make, otherwise.
He is, what he is though, so we will just have to ride his reign out.
Massively dissappointing.
I fear another development squad team, will ensure yet another early exit from the FA cup, is definitely on the cards right now.

Well we saw with the team selection at Plymouth that the board have no interest in the cup. It will be another team of youth players and the usual 3rd round exit.

We did brilliantly to pick ourselves up after the Coventry debacle, and work our way back into the POs within a matter of weeks.

We've let that progress slip by forgetting the old mantra: If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I used to dread hearing the team sheet before the cup games, now it's before the league games. I can't quite believe it. How can we keep a run together when it's a different CB pair every week, different midfield, and we are rotating out perfectly solid left backs for flighty youngsters? For what, exactly? RND isn't even ours, why do we have to protect him?

The most frightening thing for me yesterday, other then Esquerdinha's positioning, was that he wasn't replaced at half time but we had to wait until the fabled 60mins mark. How on earth is that good management? We were all delighted to get into the break at 1-1 and I would fancy even Ainsworth or Paul Hart would have worked out that RND needed to come on at HT.

What is this 60 mins all about? Smacks of data, red zones and all that Premier League rubbish to me. Stop overthinking, stop overmanaging. It is QPR not a squad of 24 superstars. Pick your best 11 and stick to it whenever possible.

And can I say it first? If Marti gets ditched by Leicester, I can hear the song returning next time we get trounced. No chance of Nourry backtracking of course, but....

Interesting to note that there were howls of dissent arriving on that ridiculous goal kick routine inside the first 20 mins...was quashed by our equaliser. But not heard that for a while.

Wasn't one of his selling points how he handled 3 game weeks? Not very well at present.

It’s like our subs are done before the game starts. We get to 60 mins and the usual 3 get subbed. It’s all pre-planned. It’s like the bloke in Dubai has told JS what to do before the game starts. The in game management at the moment is really poor and very concerning. The Brazilian lad should have been hooked at half time. He was having a mare. Couldn’t defend. Positionally all over the place. Not ready for the Championship. A solid back 4 and keeper is really costing us. We have the 3rd worst defensive record in the league.

As I said on another thread, what is the best side?

We’ll all disagree.

I’d pick:

Nardi (who else for now?)

Dunne
Mbengue
Cook
RND

Smyth
Field
Madsen
Saito

Chair
Burrell

I’d rest Kone; he’s played a lot and looks to be getting slower and tired. It would be 2 from 3 of Kone, Burrell and Chair for me now. If Kone was fully at it, I’d probably have Chair on the bench. I wouldn’t invert my wingers. Stephan and others would.

Others will undoubtedly have a different best XI. That is the problem. We/He hasn’t worked it out yet.

Good points Hunter but I genuinely don't think he is picking different players as he is trying to figure out his best XI. It's the rotating obsession, in my opinion.

For all the fancy dan new signings, how Sam Field is not in our team is inexplicable to me. Would have done a far better job than Hayden yesterday, and definitely at left back if RND wasn't going to play. I hope Field is there at Sheffield.

Southampton at home on Wednesday first. He surely plays in that given their possession heavy style, and it being highly likely they’ll dominate the ball.

Our best team needs to take in the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition, though. That's why we have a no-doubt very well-paid analyst sitting next to JS every game.

I think that's especially true against teams like Ipswich and Southampton who have players who cost tens of millions swanning around the middle of the pitch for them. I don't think Downes (£15 million) and Jander (£10 million) are as good as Nunez, Matusiwa or Egeli (combined cost: £35m) but putting just Field and Madsen up against them might ease them back into form.

So, I'd scrap the 442 thing for teams with midfields or, like Saints, who play 352, and go for something a bit more pass and midfield friendly. We've gone too square pegs again:

Nardi

Dunne
Mbengue
Morrison
RND

Varane
Field
Madsen

Chair or Saito
Kone
Poku or Smyth

Tough on Burrell but he can still do damage to tiring legs and we need to play Kone back into form as a 9, even only as an investment. I think Kone will play his way back to form but only in the position he was signed for. I'm 433 4 lyf with this squad.

Given that RND presumably can't play against Sheff Utd next Saturday I was stunned he was left out yesterday and Esquerdinha was chucked in against those wingers. I don't often coat the manager off, I accept they know a lot more about the game and their players than I do, but we said that was insane in the Crown at quarter to two and it took about 45 seconds to cost us a goal.

I honestly thought it was tactics rather than election yesterday we picked a team that looked suited to sitting in a mid block and breaking but pressed very high including Hayden and the press was broken with ease by Ipswich which left the back four regularly exposed.

As I said on another thread its a delicate balance to get right between familiarity and building of partnerships (essential in 4-4-2), keeping standards and playing in form players and dropping those whose standards have slipped, and having the right players for the opponent.

Let's look at Derby, end of three game week, we looked very leggy and lacked intensity. Mbengue had a terrible game at centre back and was dominated in the air. Varane was also very poor. Derby sat deep we created nothing and Kone looked shattered as he has done for the last week. Nardi costs us a goal

Go into Ipswich two of poorest performers dropped, but their replacements (Hayden and Morrison) turn in pretty poor performances. Ipswich had a big number 9 who dominated Morrison anyway.

The decsion to put Esquerdinha up against the championships record £17.5m signing then ask him to be the attacking outlet on the left and give very little cover seems suicidal as does the pushing of Hayden so high when they have one of the divisions better 10s in Nunez.

So I would argue that have you to pick your team for the opponent especially against the better sides and we just got that very wrong yesterday

Excellent post. I think good management from Stephan yesterday would've been to come out afterwards and say, "yeah, not the players' fault: I perhaps got the tactics wrong, we'll learn from this, we're still gelling yadda yadda...I believe in the players and this is on me."

It would take the heat out of it for the players and for the fans. And it's probably true.

We said the same thing before the game. RND should have played yesterday and on Wednesday. We know Field can do a job up at Sheffield. Now we had the farce of yesterday which was so predictable! The Brazilian lads needs a year in League 1 or 2. We seem incapable of signings full backs that can actually defend. We still have a centre back at right back and the left back position has been a farce for a few seasons now. Bidwell was probably the most solid but had his limitations. Paal was constantly exposed.

If the Manager did pick the team for the Saints game before yesterdays game, which I would hope he did not, he should not be managing a professional football club. He should have been focused on one game, that being Ipswich.

He should know his players by now ffs, he has been in office over 3 months seeing them train and play 100's of times.

He needs to stop making so many team changes whether of not they have been on an aeroplane travelling first class to Jamaica or not & then bringing them on in the 2nd half because we are loosing!!! Its nonsense!!!, if they are not fit then do not select them.

I am loosing my patience with him. He needs to 'up his game' a bit like some of the players recent performances.
