| Increase tax, cut spending or borrow 10:02 - Nov 20 with 4106 views | johnlangy | On Newsnight last night there were Labour, Lib Dem and Tory MP's discussing the possible outcomes of next week's budget. The Tory MP confirmed yet again why I haven't listened seriously to a word they've said since being kicked out of office. They (the Tories) argue against tax rises. They say that the tax take in this country is far too high. They also argue against borrowing saying the nation can't simply borrow its way forward because that debt has to be repaid at some point. So that leaves cutting government expenditure. While making one point she criticised the Labour MP for referring back to the mess the Conservatives had left behind in 2024 saying what's important is the situation we are in now forgetting that five minutes before she had criticised Labour for the mess they had left behind in 2010. The stupidity just baffles me. When the Conservatives were in power after 2010 they introduced austerity by massively cutting government expenditure. This resulted in all the pillars of a civilised country being ruined. The health service, education, policing and justice and a massive 40% decrease in local government funding. So in 2010, of the three options they took the cut spending option which, by their logic, would mean no rise in taxes or borrowing. WRONG. At the same time as cutting spending they massively tripled the UK national debt from around £900 billion to almost £3 trillion. I'm sure someone will mention Covid borrowing but that would only account for around a fifth of the extra they loaded onto the national debt during their disastrous fourteen years in office. | | | | |

There are sadly many kids living in poverty in the UK I don't deny that, and it's sometimes but not always down to the lifestyle choices of the parent(s), but there are also those who have learned how to fleece the system for every penny. Like the motobility racket mentioned on here a few weeks back...Those are the ones ruining the social safety net for the ones that genuinely need help. ...and finally, and back on topic, Reeves is once again p/ssing in the wind and getting her own back "Removing the cap is set to cost £3 billion, which presents a challenge given the government needs to find £20 billion in the Budget to plug the gap in the public finances" God help us....

Poverty is relative Even a cursory look at photos from the early 20th C will see orphans shipped out to workhouses and girls put into service and this at a time of huge wealth , for some Today, I heard a chap born during the war and how tough life was Imagine using cardboard to cover holes in shoes Kids evacuated often had a terrible time My wife worked with a lady who was evacuated to north wales and first thing they did was cut her plaid off and cut her hair They were treated like skivvies in many cases Today’s kids would be traumatised citing human rights and mental health Sorry , but it’s nothing resembling “ poverty” when a feckless mum has finds for nails done, vapes and tats and soon they’ll be able to have more kids from whoever and claim benefits, not to mention a better phone to text utter shite to whoever she’s seeing This talk of poverty insults our parents generation who went through hell, literally, who’s fathers died at the hands of the Japs in Singapore , for instance We have totally lost the sense of reality

Few of things behind my reasoning: 1. A third child would gain about 900 quid a year. Not really a kings ransom and the idea that families are handsomely benefitting from the system I don’t believe to be true. 2. Removing the cap would lift over a half a million out of poverty - disproportionately in the poorest parts of the country. 3. I don’t moment think it’s true that keeping the cap is saving money. Costs to services just increase. 4. It’s not the children’s fault 5. Although there are cases of the system being abused (which of course should be tackled) but there should be a safety net available. For example, 2 working families one with 2 children and one with 4. Both fall on hard times (eg illness, death, job loss). In the current system, the 4 child family would be perversely affected. Doesn’t seem fair. [Post edited 25 Nov 17:06]

Ah right....my bad I get where you're coming from now. Yes, everyone under a certain threshold can claim CB whether they are working or not which is around £900 year.

This was money paid with no requirement to work. The number of "single" parents who subsequently advised us that they were pregnant when their kids were 15 or so was not insignificant.

Those on benefits will be better off than those working, this government is getting worse everyday, absolutely utterly clueless.

There are costs associated with work - transport, childcare, clothing etc. The change will help. Also bear in mind about 60% of those families affected already have at least one parent in work. It is very annoying when people take the mick and that needs dealing with, but it shouldn’t mean everyone is punished. As for the single parent with 5 children, it’s entirely possible that they’re costing more in extra public services than the cost of the cap lift.

| Increase tax, cut spending or borrow on 16:52 - Nov 27 with 272 views | felixstowe_jack | Yes covid borrowing, and vastly reduced income tax and NI as people were furloughed plus the cost of vaccines The next big crisis was of course the energy crisis, caused by the Russians invading Ukraine. This caused the electricity price to increase from £37 per MW to £200 per MW as well as gas prices soaring. The government spent £64 billion giving every household generous payments to cover some of the increased energy costs. | |
