Horrible rumours on the rumour mill it may be closing.
No !! That would be a loss. When Bedford Jezzard ran it, I used to tell folk that he sold us Rodney Marsh when he was Fulham manager. Not true, that was later.
Anyone know anything ?

The landlord was featured a bit before the budget on a Facebook group called London pubs saying that costs have gone up by £ 22000 this year and if taxes go up he might have to close next year. Then in the event of the budget the business rates debacle has made it a lot more likely that thousands more pubs will close. They were supposed to be helping the high street and pubs, but are adding many thousands to pubs business rates instead

Thanks. As you can see from the picture of me looking at my phone ( not really), it's a very pleasant pub to be in.
I'll try and use it a bit more.

This. One of the most obvious signs of the decline of civilisation.

The government clearly has no interest protecting spaces that, for many communities, are the only places left to gather. It's estimated also that the beer and pub sector pours more than £30 billion into the economy every year and supports over a million jobs - more if you include those involved in the supply chain such as farmers and other industries.

The irony is that pubs are trading well, but most of the money that goes into the till goes straight back out in bills and taxes, so for for many it’s impossible to make a profit. New rateable values published after the Budget reveal an eye-watering 30% increase for pubs (and a 14% increase for restaurants and cafés to boot).

I can vaguely understand politicians not giving a shit about public services as they don't use them, but surely some of them go to the pub sometime? Or do they just drink wine at home? I really do despair.

There's a heavily subsidised bar in the House of Commons.

Those "politicians" do their drinking in the tax-payer subsidised H of C bar - no £7.50 pints in there.

Hilaire Belloc famously said “Englishmen, drown your sorrows, for when you lose your inns, you lose the last of England”. Or approximately.
Pubs have been here for well over a thousand years. Even in a big place like London there are areas where you can walk around for ages and not see a pub. Near us I would cite East Acton and large parts of Fulham. Thankfully, Hammersmith, despite losing some has plenty to offer.
Or so I'm told. I don't go in them myself.

And…there's a pub over the road from the H of C that has a division bell to tell our MPs they need to go back for a vote.

Brilliant marketing. When the bell goes, three people leave and everyone else rushes up to get a round in.

You think the govermnet has no interest in protecting pubs?

I think it goes deeper.

I think it's actively looking to squeeze out these places percieved as meeting grounds for angry male pale and stale bods like myself.
Never really gave it a thought until talking to a black cab driver and a massively intelligent friend of mine from Hindu heritage. The Tories didn't really give a fcuk about anyone or anything but the Keir Stazimer and Khan alliance seems to be doing all they can to drive Public Houses into the ground.

I really think we're sleepwalking into a form of Animal Farm at the moment.

Was also talking to a Publican a while ago and I said that the advent of a £10 pint as the norm was rapidly approaching and "you lot don't help yourself" in that respect.
She then rolled out the costs she has to cover and cited market forces etc.

Whatever it is, however it's happening it is nothing shy of tragic.
Cannot imagine living my life again and not spending all those hours of hilarity in the battle cruiser.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Indeed, does feel like they don't want the "wrong people" getting together in groups and having a nice time.

Stay in your homes!

I'm not sure, if it's conspiracy or cock up, nearly always it's cock up every time. I can't believe Rachel reeves stood up at the budget and said proudly we are reducing business rates and said about a new golden age for hospitality, whilst in the knowledge that the business rates were likely to rise massively. Surely she didn't know that was the reality. It's either a whopper of a lie or incredible incompetence, but surely if she knew she wouldn't have said that, as she would have known she'd be found out pretty soon

It does look bleak for pubs. I'm told many young people have signally failed their forebears by being TT (for shame).
And of course a sizeable portion of the populace won't touch alcohol at all (for shame).
I wonder when the ten quid pint will arrive.

I haven’t looked into it but I know that a lot of business rates have been discounted since the covid pandemic (which was covered by central government). Have they removed the discount and reduced the overall rate of tax at the same time?

Therefore some businesses will have to pay more next year than they did last year but it’s actually at a lower rate than pre covid levels. So in effect it’s a reduction if that makes sense 🤔

Like I say I don’t know if that’s the case and not making excuses for anyone.

That is part of it yes. The multiplier is less, which is what the government is claiming, and the discount is going as you say. But the revaluations are cranking up, so the upshot of it is that a lot of pubs are facing a 78 percent rise in business rates. Considering they made a big play of reforming business rates to help pubs and shops is massively bogus

Just out of idle curiosity, anyone know if a pint costs £6.30 which seems to be the norm in London, how much the pub gets ?

The Thatched House on 21:57 - Dec 3 with 397 viewsguitarzan

A pub usually sells at three times the price they buy it for. But then add rental and staffing costs etc
