| 35 points after 23 games, what’s the realistic target after 46? 19:53 - Dec 28 with 1435 views | Spen | We sacked off the first few games, like a few other teams. The squad took a while to take shape and get settled, so is more than 70 points what we should think is a reasonable amount to expect? Is anything in the 60’s a disappointment? Is 75+ something we should really be aiming for? A few of the fancied teams didn’t get going on the early part of the season, but against that, a few of the teams that weren’t expected to do well did. Now I don’t know what my name is or where I come from. | | | | |

| 35 points after 23 games, what’s the realistic target after 46? on 20:07 - Dec 28 with 1354 views | bosh67 | I think if we get anywhere near 70 points this season it would have been a massive step in the right direction. I'm going to say we'll get 65+ and be in the top 10. Although there are a few posters on here who would then say sack everyone and sell the club for parts, a top 10 finish would be major progress for us to build upon. We've had our arses kicked by Boro and Coventry so far so anyone who thinks we may be ready for a play off place could be dreaming a bit. That said, we are a better outfit this year than we have been for 3-4 years and certainly shouldn't be afraid of anyone really below the top 2. | |

| 35 points after 23 games, what’s the realistic target after 46? on 20:12 - Dec 28 with 1313 views | turnsey | Our best totals since relegation are 68 and 66 with Warburton, I believe. 56 last season. I'm worried we're only a Burrell injury away from having Frey up front from a long stretch and have only one reliable left-back. A slight dropoff to mid-60s might be good for top half and an overall improvement on last season. Anything more than that and I will be pleased. Cannot bear to think of playoffs unless we are still in and around them in ~March. | | | |
| 35 points after 23 games, what’s the realistic target after 46? on 22:58 - Dec 28 with 1039 views | Myke | It’s really difficult to call. You often see relegation threatened clubs (ourselves included) pick up a disproportionate amount of points in the last 10 games or so. Likewise teams that are comfortably in the play offs (like Sunderland last year and us under Rednapp) often drop a disproportionate amount of points in the same period. Overall, despite individual setbacks, we are in a far better place than I expected us to be.. If we get to 70 and finish a couple of places/points outside the play-offs I would consider that a very successful season (as long as we win the cup as well of course). | | | |

Agree re Burrell but if Kolli remains out of the picture, I wonder if Bennie could step up. We've never really seen him as a number 9 in his few appearances so far.

| 35 points after 23 games, what’s the realistic target after 46? on 06:03 - Dec 29 with 777 views | cyprusmel | I think a lot depends on the next 3 matches, if we can gain a maximum 9 points that should ensure we are in the top 6 at the end of the first January week. If they still have money available the board might decide to make a fist of it and sign additional players in the hope we can make the play offs. The recruitment this season has been good overall, much better than in years gone bye and the club are sure to be following targets for January and in the Summer. So it might be that the next 3 games will define our season. Without additions to the squad I think we should finish between 65-75 points. With additions, who knows. [Post edited 29 Dec 12:39]

Agree with all that Mel and we’re in a better position at Christmas than most of thought we would be. I still think we’re in a building phase and not yet ready for the playoffs. I’d take it of course but “if” we did manage to go up, we’d surely struggle and I’d be worried that we’d throw crazy money around again to try to stay up. Amit knows what he’s doing so I trust him and the board but I guess I’m still scarred from our recent attempts to return to the Prem.

| 35 points after 23 games, what’s the realistic target after 46? on 07:38 - Dec 29 with 651 views | Hoopsie | You will logically think that we “should” do better in the latter half of the season, so expect 70 points minimum…. ….. if the first half of the season’s games are for the team to gel with new coach, new tactics, new way of playing, then it is reasonable to expect the team to do better in the next 23 games So 70 or more points is a logical target 60-70 points - the team is settled and consistent* 50-60 is underwhelming borders on worrying Anything under 50 will be disappointing and relegation form, after what we have seen in the first 23 games of what the team is capable of *consistency - much talked about in other threads | |

| 35 points after 23 games, what’s the realistic target after 46? on 08:43 - Dec 29 with 570 views | jonath1 | While we have improved over the first half of the season, and can reasonably expect to improve some more in the second, so have and will other teams. Also, while the squad depth is also better, there are a couple of injuries to come I fear that will be more significant. Burrell or Mbengue or Madsen perhaps. Julien may have or find solutions, but I am not predicting more points second half of the season. Finally tally around 60 I think. Doesn't mean I'm not keeping my work calendar light around May. Hope of playoffs remains unsurpressable. Loving this season. | | | |

| 35 points after 23 games, what’s the realistic target after 46? on 11:24 - Dec 29 with 372 views | derbyhoop | Given the start we had, why can't we match, or even exceed, the total from the first 23? If we match, we'll probably end up about 8th. Exceed, by 3-5 points and we'll be in the playoffs. 2 caveats 1. Injuries to key players 2. Other clubs strengthen, in January, more than we do. E.g. Southampton, Sheff Utd, Leicester. [Post edited 29 Dec 12:35]

Thoughts will turn to holiday brochures rather than maintaining a push for a play-off place. Oh, and I really hate the expression "this time it's different"!

Don't understand why you think the second half of the season will necessarily be an improvement on the first (even though, rather oddly, you also say it won't lead to m/any more points). If anything, our history shows we can start like a house on fire then tail off (very) badly (Magilton, Warburton, Beale). If we do consistently well in our next 3-5 games, I'll perhaps come over more to your view that the improvement of the team may not be fools gold after all, but for now I'Il be keeping my powder dry.
