I used to go to America a lot, but when the Dollar rate crashed from about 1.60 to less than 1.35 it started to get expensive and barmen expect 15% minimum tip all the time | |

Just got back from the states most places expect 20% tip when they give you machine it's on there15 20 or30 % when for meal with family bill 370 dollars tip 80 dollars so 450 dollars meals not that great beer in normal bars 8 dollars buy 2 with tip 20 dollars rip off. My granddaughter works in bar/restaurant at weekends on good weekends makes 1000 dollars in tips basic wages are 8 dollars a hour so they need tips |  | | |

$1,000 is a ridiculous amount in tips for a weekend.
I don’t mind tipping for good service, but there seems to be a sense of entitlement out there which is wholly wrong. | |

Tipping is engrained into the US hospitality industry but I still find it utterly distasteful. Many moons ago I was leaving a restaurant in New York opposite Central Park, nothing special but I tipped 10% of the bill (the norm back then), and was astonished when the Maitre De followed me into the back of the Yellow Cab, waving the bill at me, asking me what was wrong, was the food so awful etc etc. One of my life's regrets was that I paid him an extra five bucks to get out of my face :( | | | |

I went to Japan last March where tipping is absolutely non existent. They would see it as an insult as exceptional service is standard. From bars to restaurants, taxi's and hotel bell desk. Incredible and beautiful place to visit. |  |
