Yeah that looks like our strongest 11 at this point. Positionally I would put Vale beside Madsen, Chair on the left and Smith on the right. If (and it’s a very big IF) we were to get regular game time out of JCS, then moving Edward’s into the centre of the park could be another option. |  | | |

Depends who we’re playing. I’m not sure I’d want a Chair/Madsen combo as our DMs against a team like Southampton or Middlesbrough at their peak. It’s a lot to ask of them defensively especially if our opponents are playing with a three man midfield. |  | | |

Assuming Stephan lines up as a 4-4-2 against next season, which seems likely.
Kemper at LB
Varane or Morgan alongside Madsen. Chair does not belong as a CM in a 4-4-2. I'd argue this position is the most important area, yet one where we have the most limited options.
Vale at RM, and Chair at LM both to cut inside seems likely. Smyth as impact sub against tiring legs. |  | | |

Charles / Ward
Mbengue Edwards Dunne Kemper
Poku Madesen Varanne Chair
Kone Burrell
I like Morgan but think he is better in a midfield 3 and not sure how he really fits in our 4-4-2 system. AM hoping lots of work has been done with Saito and he becomes a good option with Smyth off the wing with Vale as well.
I'd also like us to hopefullly find a right back who can cross the ball. Mbengue is good at lots of things but delievery is terrible generally. | |

We've been banging on about bringing in a B2B/bit of a brut for the middle, and Chair ain't that type of player.
I don't think KM is ready and only seen a cameo from IA. We're two light in midfield as it stands since IH/SF left, and might need a third if JV goes. The full back coverage sits behind stiffening the midfield for me. |  |

Yes. Much of the 'beautiful game' is actually messy and far from beautiful - typically in midfield. A team has to have at least one player in that area of the pitch who will sort the mess out; someone who actually enjoys doing it, for the benefit of those who are more likely to do the 'beautiful' things. I cannot see such a player in the squad. I should be surprised if the management thought any differently about this. One can only hope that they have at least one such person in mind to join the squad. | | | |

Am not sure where this idea of playing Chair as a defensive midfield has come from?
For me the first 11 (assuming no more in-out goings) would be:
Charles
Mbengue Dunne Edwards Kember
Varane Madsen
Vale Chair
Burrell Kone
In an ideal world we would sell Varane and replace him with a box to box midfielder.
Vale would also probably be vying for his spot with Smith.
An challenging one for me is Morgan. Arguably doesn't do enough to justify a first time space but needs first team football to develop. But we can't afford to send him out on loan without at least one additional midfielder. The danger - hope not - is he becomes like a classier Dixon-Bonner - someone who we hope will break into the first team one day, just not this season (appreciate he has played a lot more than Dixon-Bonner but without really nailing down a place). | | | |
