Didn't see the game yesterday as I'm away with the family but reading the reports made me question our best formation with the players we have.
Feels like square pegs and round holes at the moment.
442 allows us to play Burrell and Kone
We have the wide attacking players for 433 but means dropping a striker, I'm not convinced we have the midfield for this formation
4231 feels a bit more suited to our game but do we have a striker who can play up top on their own
Interested to know what you think.

In the Mackie and Burrell video on the offy at the moment, Burrell says they've been playing 433/442 in preseason, but like others, I think we played 4231 v Millwall.
The formation worked okay against a good Millwall side and our ball retention was much better than last season, meaning we controlled the game particularly in the first half. For me, the big downside was that Burrell looked a bit lost playing wide. I'd like to see what a 433 shape would look like and if it would suit him more. |  | | |

If Chair simply 'has' to play, then it's 4312 with him behind the front two of Buzz and Kone.
I know Chair is coming back off a lost two years, but if he's going to slow everything up (and take rubbish set-plays) then he's on the bench to wrestle back the coverted #10 spot off Vale
For my money, Buzz up top, probably alongside Kone, is going to max our attacking strengths. Then the 3 in the middle are from: Isak, Kamara, Mads, Morgan, and Varane.
Thereafter, assorted diddymen fight it out to earn the right to come off the bench to unleash utter mayhem for the oppo in the latter stages of a game.
The defence, assuming Lamps returns to full ramming speed, picks itself, with Charles as rush goalie. |  |

horse for courses, some games I think 2 up front will be better, certainly at home but if we want to stop teams running through our midfield we need that extra man in there.
Performance wise we weren't bad yesterday, I didn't think the formation was the problem, we just lacked bravery in the final third |  | | |

Your 4312 would be an interesting adapted 433, John. The downside would be a lack of width unless the fullbacks provided it, but there's always some issue to solve, whatever the formation. Also, our mini wingers don't get much of a look in. | | | |

Good point above re: horses/courses and flexibility. However, Smyth is more reliable and likely to do something with his speed, and I hope the real Poku comes forward and both give Jools a huge selection headache. As for Dembele and Saito? Not shown much yet. Maybe Big Phil, Sutton and Scarlett might get their chances!

We started ok, but after Smyth got fouled early Chair started drifting left and looking to cut in. Mbengue was making good decisions and space offering out balls but then he could never link up with Vale or find a decent cross
Honestly thought we looked short on ideas in the final third, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw another player or two through the door.
Was worried by the amount of times we could have got off a shot but choose a 5 yard pass instead |  |

It’s not really an option now but the obvious formation to get 2 strikers on the pitch together and not lose the the midfield would have been looking at a 3 at the back. A combination of the back 4 yesterday and/or JCS would be decent and a fit Lamptey and Paul Smyth would do a job on the other side as wing backs and Kone/Burrell as a pair would be exciting. But we’ve not gone down that route and looks like it will either be 4-4-2 or 1 of Kone or Burrell if we change formation, like yesterday, as don’t think either Burrell or Kone are suited to adjusting style and playing wide or deeper.
I thought yesterday was ok and early days but feels we’re missing a creative spark. A couple of times the ball found itself to Smyth, Vale, Chair, Poku, and just felt a more dynamic, attack minded player would have caused them all sorts of problems but we don’t really have that in the team but still hoping Poku can be that player. Appreciate Chair and Vale slightly different profile of players but reminded me a bit of England in some of the World Cup games where wide players got on the ball and felt if they’d been really on it they could have really transformed the performance.
Not too down after yesterday though. | | | |
