When I was 24 I was renting a room with no savings, 30 years later I own a home
together with pension and cash savings.
I am infinitely richer than I was at 24.
My son is 28, he has a house with a mortgage, pension and cash savings albeit smaller in size than my own.
In 30 years time if he keeps working he will be in a similar position to me, probably better if he inherits anything.
The argument that older people tend to have more wealth misses the point.
The issue is that there are too many unemployed youngsters, this Government is not helping by taxing jobs etc. and the housing supply has been strangled by Governments of all types over the last 40 years. |

I'll finish at 60 with 38 years in the bag. Theoretically I could go earlier but its not really feasable as even going a year earlier hammers the pension.
I won't stop then though. I'll be looking to work part time. Maybe not to 68 but certainly for a few years. | | | |

Hard work and sensible planning, he and his girlfriend rented one room for five years and saved like stink, he also made some good money buying and selling stuff, he used help to buy Isas etc. and put a £40,000 deposit together principally by saving one salary. |  |

I feel I've been lucky.
I did some hard stuff. First person in my family to go to University, trained in Swansea so I could work part time and not build up a big debt, moved 260 miles away for better job opportuities and worked pretty hard to rise up the ranks a bit.
I did have advantages that young people don't have now.
- I was the last year to have a student grant. If I remember it was just shy or £2000 a year. Enough with part time working to not have to take out loans for living expencses.
- No tuition fees. I dont think I coulfdhave gone on to further education the costs involved now
- Bought my first flat at 22. At this time you could get 100% motgages to get you on the ladder. As someone without the bank of mum and dad this was amazing.
- Also that was just before the housing boom made prices fly. Allwed me to by a small house at 27.

Tembo is an option for a mortgage they run deals I think, I've an ISA with them and I keep getting emails about their mortgages, I pretty much take no interest, as I'm not looking for a mortgage or ever likely to again, my eldest has a lifetime ISA that's for mortgage purposes I think, don't know who its with. | | | |
