The Venables Team of the Early 80s 20:20 - Aug 22 with 6062 views

Massively underrated and massively overlooked too.

People mention the 75/76 season and then the Ferdinand/Wilkins/Sinton/McDonald team in the 90s, but this team of Terry Venables scored goals for fun.

Just seeing a poster compare Ronnie to Terry Fenwick got me thinking, its a team and era that doesnt get mentioned enough.

Didnt live near the ground then, so often my first knowledge of the score was when stopping mid paper round to check out last nights scores in the newspapers and then attempt to shove them through post boxes that refused to open.

A lot of Flanagan and Allen references, seem to recall...

That period Rangers also won the combination league and the SW league under the stewardship of
Venables and an upcoming upstart in George Graham. He was running the club and talked about being an owner. Players taught a system and graduating into the first team.

Also Gregory wanted out and apparently agreed to sell the club to his consortium. Gregory and Venables sort of fell out and in came Bulstrode and the birth of The LSA.

Saddest day for me as Rangers fan. Under TV we could have been a force in English football and create a legacy. I know Gregory was a dodgy character from colleagues who knew him. Thing is TV was as well and ended up being told by a High court judge as an untrustworthy individual many years later. So in hindsight etc.

9,000 home gates in a stagnant era for the game but so proud to be a Rangers fan surrounded by big well supported London clubs. Little us getting to a cup final back then as a 2nd division club literally mind blowing. Hi Dave and Dino.

First game promoted was Man Utd away. Healthy ish turn out. Game was covered by Match of the Day. Programme was full of praise for TV and our team by Alex Ferguson.

2-0 down at HT. 2nd half we had a real go at them. Allen scored at our end and it was all us. Last minute Arnold Murem scored and made it 3-1.The bias towards United was ridiculous and made you realize how the narrative works and still does.

We were the side show but that season finishing 5th and giving a lot of the big boys a bloody nose testified to this. Wolves and Norwich 4-0 away wins for example. Mad and Brilliant.

I ran coaches to away game back then using Harrow coaches and our regular driver Charlie from Rayners Lane station.Fun and memorable days and even got stopped once by the Police who thought we were miners traveling to a picket line. Very surreal.

I don't think Venables and Gregory fell out.

Gregory was grooming TV to be his successor at QPR but the Barcelona job was an offer TV couldn't refuse and that put an end to any possibility of TV running QPR.

Jim Gregory subsequently became chairman at Portsmouth in 90's but had to step back for health reasons and was replaced by his son Martin.

It was Martin Gregory who then sold a controlling interest in Pompey to TV.

Martin Gregory and TV do appear to have fallen out after TV disposed of his Pompey shares.

I used to joke that Veners tied some fishing wire round the Lino’s flag hence it going up all the time catching opp off side.

Quite a few of that squad im sure were signed by Tommy Doc in the Gregory spending spree after we got relegated.

Venners brought over with him from Palace Fenwick Flanagan Sealy and a little later Budgie Budgie

Just wish Jim opened his wallet a bit more after 1977 to prop up our 75/76 team. Must have been a bad time for selling motos

Whilst the Dave Sexton era was my first memories of QPR I was too young to fully appreciate what a great side that was. The Terry Venables era is still fully imbedded in my brain. Wonderful times: League Winners, FA Cup finalists, European Football and clobber from Stuarts down the Bush......

Pretty sure Macca made his debut under Venables when we lost away at Wolves, 0-4, I think, in 82-83.

No - his debut was the following season when we won 4.0 at Wolves. He had previously had a loan spell at Charlton.

Alan Mullery what a disaster he was, the only good thing was that he was ditched by Xmas 1984. Things improved when Jim Smith was appointed in 1985, shame we lost Simon Stainrod before he joined, although John Byrne was a decent player alongside Gary Bannister.
