Looked back at the match on March between us and them at HQ and despite the obvious difference in the score line there was also some other major differences:
- six of our starting line up played against them whilst Boro had eight new faces, who cost between them around £million. Our ‘new recruits’, who started yesterday, which included Chair and Poku cost nothing.
- they had 53% of possession. Yeah we know about the possession stats but at half time we were much lower on possession and trailing and it goes to show the total dominance we had in the second half bar a couple of breakaways, Middlesbrough just didn’t look like scoring and resorted to the kind of shîthousery we thought was being eliminated from the game unless you get a ref like Madley.
- We had six shots all game, four on target to their 13 with 6 on target. Our total number of shots exceeded theirs yesterday.
- and of course the score line. I feel that had Vale’s shot gone in, any curling shot that hits the inside of a post should go only one way, and it wasn’t the direction it went, we would have gone on to win.
So all in all, any defeat is disappointing but I felt that the first half the team knew that this was their first big test and stood back a bit too much giving Boro too much respect. Second half I think they very much proved to themselves that they are more than a match for one of the top sides in this division and that was without bringing Lamptey, Madsen and Camara on. Now the proof is to continue to prove how good they are and start putting other teams to the sword that I think this lot are more than capable of.
And for me, the big difference was that I left yesterday very encouraged, disappointed that we didn’t get what we deserved, but none the less very encouraged. Last season…………

You could tell how well we played yesterday by the way Middlesbrough played like Preston in the last 30 minutes.They have to amend the law about subs coming straight on after a player receiving treatment goes off.If the same player comes back after treatment they have to wait for 1 minute before returning,but a sub comes straight on.They should be made to wait the same amount of time on the sidelines.
I don’t know how the ref only put 6 minutes up yesterday as it should’ve been nearer 10. |  | | |

Agree with your thoughts though. First half I thought we were a little cautious with a lot of triangles at the back which didn't really get us up the field - second half, much more on the front foot and higher, with towards the end, just one or two centre backs up towards the half-way line and everyone else in their half.
Couple of observations from me. Yes, last season they were much more fluid all over the park - the CM who I assume they brought in to replace Hayden Hackney (Morris) was pretty predictable and that Conway up front, my goodness, it was like watching a vision of Charlie Kelman in 10 years time. How much did they spunk on him ?
As you say, quite an encouraging second half but if we are going to rotate a 25 man squad this season then we need them all to hit the ground running - although I'm sure Ben is working on that. | | | |

I love the positivity and agree that we're improving but 'Boro deserved to win that game. They had several clear cut chances and could easily have left W12 with a 4-1 victory. I, naturally, was gutted Vale's shot didn't go in but I don't think we would have gone on to win the game as 'Boro appear to have added dark arts to their list of talents. However, I, like you, am encouraged by the improvement and feel positive going forward. |  | | |

Pretty fair analysis, though I do think Boro deserved the win. Their shape out of possession was excellent, hence we didn't get any real clear cut chances. | |
