It is 25 years ago today since the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre. Were you one of the many who had the TV on at the time?
I was in the B52 bar in Sukhumvit Soi 22 in Bangkok sipping an early evening beer with my stepfather who was visiting. The TV was on. I heard an American at the bar exclaiming loudly:. F**k! They have f*****g brought this on themselves". A minute or two later the TV channel showed a replay of the first plane hitting the North Tower. A lot of people say that their first reaction was that this was an accident but this guy got it right straight away.

The World changed that day and has never been the same since for me. I think a lot of people feel this way. Before 9/11 there were of course wars, conflicts, famine etc but there was a sense humanity was moving forward and things were going in the right direction a sense of optimism for the future. It cast a shadow over that and has never lifted. It led to many further wars, death and destruction and the World seems to be on a downward trajectory ever since.

So true I was visiting clients and this image popped up on the tv screen I started to get miffed as he wasnt payong much attention Then I realised why It wasn’t a film It did change all And not for the best Be lucky folks
I was on holiday sitting around the hotel pool. Slowly I noticed it was getting eerily quiet and hardly anyone was about. Someone passing said to go into my room and watch the TV "it looks as If world war three is kicking off". We spent most of the day watching history unfold. It was even more poignant for me as only a couple of months earlier I had been up the towers. Everyone spent the rest of the day quietly not knowing what the future was going to be. It got even more worrying the next day as there were no departures or arrivals with flights grounded. Slowly things got back to normal but there was a tremendous sense of not knowing what was going to happen next. I never have problems flying but the journey home was quite a nervous one.

I don't know if it was the same for you but all through the IRA bombing campaigns I wasn't unduly concerned living and working in London - sure it was at the back of your mind and I heard 2 of them go off both times as I was leaving work, but after 9/11 I felt London would be next. Soon the news was full of theories about Dirty Bombs, Nukes, Poison Gas Attacks on the Tube etc..
I'm not ashamed to say it did get to me and was the main driver for me moving to Brighton 6 months later. I moved back in under a year but I did need that break. I was in London as the 7/7 attacks were happening but for some reason it didn't affect me as much - I think because we had got used to living in state of heightened awareness and uneasiness by then and was resigned to the fact that this is the world we live in now.

Watched it at home. The first plane was very suspicious, as planes can only fly south to north over Manhattan and that one flew the other way. So I knew something wasn't right, but didn't know what. The second plane answered the question. My friend is a local fireman so we went to New York 9 times on fundraising activities. Went to Ground Zero. I didn't go down there, but my mate did. You could have fitted Swansea into the hole in the ground. We were selling T-shirts outside the firehouse one day and an old lady gave us $50 and said to keep the change. We asked if she was sure, as the T-shirts were $30. She got a newspaper article out of her handbag, showing one of the firemen who died literally pushing her down the steps in the towers. She lived, he died. The three of us just stood there crying. The T-shirts were $30, which was $15 for the shirt and $15 for the widows. Being New York, they had fake T-shirts for sale on the sidewalks for $20. Also, 6 weeks after 9/11, Gerry Adams was on tour, raising money for the IRA. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter! One of the fireman had a breakdown in the local pub in front of our eyes. Horrific. His best friend had died on 9/11. His house was next door and they had lockers next to each other. He couldn't bear going to work to see his mate's locker, but he couldn't bear going home, as his wife was constantly wanting him to leave the fire service, fearing another attack. He developed a huge drink problem, wrote his car off when drink driving and was drinking himself to death. Fortunately they got him help after the breakdown. We were there in New York for the legendary fight between the firemen and the police outside Giuliani's office. He was a horrific mayor and brutal towards the fireman. So much more I could say!

Driving through a Gloucester suburb called Hucclecote. Tony Jenkins (RIP) who was very active in the stance against Hamer and Mclure (and rightly so) called me and said America is under attack. People may recall him he ran JackPlug zine around that time and before. Mad as a box of frogs.

Flew home from Majorca that evening the airport was bonkers, you could only carry your passport on the plane and 1 small bottle of water that was given to you, you had to sit seat belt all the way no food or drink served and had to escorted to the toilet one at a time by two cabin crew Landed in Rhoose airport armed police and police dogs patrolling everywhere even the runway, driving home listening to R1 playing somber music thinking sh1t wtf is happening.....I honestly believe the world has never been the same since,up to that point we were all just coasting

I'd had the week off work and had a late night so was late getting up (for me) and I wandered downstairs in a haze, put the tv on and went to the kitchen to make breakfast. I saw the tv and like others. thought it was a film, I checked the time because I thought it was much later than I realised but it was just before 9am. I switched channels but it was more or less the same pthing, just different reporters and angles. Then I realised something was very wrong and I sat down to pay proper attention.
It was really weird because as I sat the camera [icked up the second plane and they followed it in until it hit, it was surreal. Then the smoke alrm went off, my bacon was burnt, my eggs not even cracked. It was one of the strangest days of my life, sitting at home watching this unfold. It's the thing about evenst of this size, they stick in your memory. I know exactly where I was when Princess Di was killed too.

What I was doing on that fateful Sept 11, 2001 day, 25 years ago: I was a sales rep for a small tech startup in Emeryville, CA, NextBus Information System. I had laid the groundwork for getting a pilot demo program into Arlington Regional Transit (ART), which had a small fleet of buses and coordinated with WMATA (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority). We were ready to launch our NextBus project and service on Sept 11, 2001.
I decided to drive up from North Carolina (a 4.5 hr drive) instead of flying into D.C. to assist with the marketing of our launch. I left NC at 3 a.m. on 9/11 and drove right by the Pentagon at approx 7:30 a.m. enroute to the Ballston-MU Metro station (5 miles away) to assist the ART marketing team in handing out brochures on how to use our NB service. Our focus was to connect with Metro passengers coming out of the subway underground to the surface at the Ballston-MU station.

The first plane, American Airlines Flight 11 slammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m. ET. The 2nd plane, United Airlines Flight 175 collided into the South Tower of WTC at about 9:02. The 3rd plane, AA Flight 77, crashed into the Pentagon building at 9:37 a.m. ET, approximately two hours after I had driven by on my way to the Metro station.
I recall seeing the signs on the highway for the exits to the Pentagon while enroute to the metro station. The world around me literally stopped later that morning as chaos struck Washington DC and New York City and the rest of the US and the rest of the world.
As we all should know, the 4th plane, UA Flight 93, tragically yet heroically, crashed into a rural Pennsylvanian field as the passengers and plane crew were able to keep the hijackers from hitting their intended target.

It seems to me that posters are absolutely right to say that 9/11 is an event that changed the world, but it could be argued that there is a reluctance to talk about its significance, particularly in education and in the political domain. Interesting article about this in The Telegraph.
Remember it so well. I’d been to a meeting in the WDA offices in Cardiff meeting some contractors then went for lunch nearby. Then I went to Argos in the old shopping centre to buy some cordless phones. I was with a work colleague and as I was paying he was watching the bank of TVs they had along one wall. He called over to me and I saw the first plane going into the North Tower but this was a replay. Then I saw the second one but I’m not sure whether that was live or had not long happened.
Like most I thought it must be pilot error or ATC or something other than terrorism but the truth soon became apparent.
An awful episode in our lifetimes and as many have said, things went downhill after that resulting in 25 years of political turmoil across the globe and the uncertainties that come with it.
I was working out our back, came in and thought it was a film, just at that moment the 2 nd plane emerged, and i was just shocked , like everyone else, it seemed so unreal after that.

The world has changed dramatically in the last 25 yrs, if you go back 25yrs pre 9/11 the world as a whole building up to 9/11 was generally pretty steady. The world today now is full of hate,greed and corruption from Royals/Politicians down to the man on the street, you have to be left wing or right wing when in reality 99.9% of us are neither I fear the next 25 yrs I'm so glad I was born in the 70's played in the parks and climbed trees. Teenager in the 80's growing up mixing with other youngsters Discos, discovering drink sex and a bit of dope. Hit the 90's discovering foreign travel with mates parties, raves and then bought my own house and all the freedom that came with that...all without a pot to p1ss in. I remember my oldman saying to me early 1990's you dont know how lucky you are...today I just pity kids for whats to come

I turned on the TV while getting ready for work in Dallas. There was a wide shot with the first tower on fire, and the commentary was that a "small" plane accidentally struck it.
About 5 minutes later we watched the 2nd plane hit live on TV, and the shock of what was happening immediately hit me.
Walking out to my car a half hour later, someone told me the Pentagon also got hit. My brother in law was a journalist who officed there, so our family started freaking out. But thankfully he wasn't there.
I was at home in our new house in Cwmtwrch. A day off and was with my builder and plasterer. The radio was on, probably radio two as they were old gits and the DJ Steve Wright. He said there was a report of a small aircraft hitting one on the towers. We thought that was really odd as it would be difficult to get in that zone. What seemed like a minute later they said another small plane had hit the other tower. Alarm bells. Drove down to my mum's house to get some proper news and left the builders to it. Then the horror

Small planes used to fly over Manhattan regularly, as it is on the landing path for La Guardia airport. However they would fly South to North, while the first plane was flying North to South.

He was a decent guy deep down and loved the swans. When we ran (Phil and I) he was regularly involved with us. Brought over. Brit Ecklands brother ? (Or in law) it was all a publicity stunt from what I could gauge but it really messed with the heads of then owners Silver Shield and co, which I enjoyed immensely. They even colluded with a few local Swans fans (offers of hospitality and freebies) to get him arrested and charged with some form of public order offence. You know you are winning when a football club does that.
He died from that virus thingy.

I read the British colonial past also featured the first moves and stoppage of the slave trade. Everyone was at it, the British spearheaded it concluding. I’m currently considering putting in a claim for those who could have come here but didn’t which in turn affected my families demographic.
Here's an account of Britain's efforts to fight the slave trade in the 1800s. British was alone in having a dedicated naval fleet to combat slavery.
