Relegation from division 1 confirmed today
I’ve noticed that the bbc match reports have referred to us as Rose And Crown, makes us sound like a pub team which on reflection is probably rather apt
Been following country cricket since the late 80’s, used to go to Northlands Road with my dad and grandad and cannot remember a poorer county side. Quite shocking when you think we were 1 wicket away from winning the championship at Lancashire not that long ago |  |

Shocking indeed. Batting abysmal and bowling distinctly average. It's a funny thing but those in charge of cricket teams don't attract the anger that their football counterparts do. Those in charge of Hants over last 3 or 4 years have been every bit as bad as SR. Probably worse given that Hants are relatively speaker a far 'bigger' club than the Saints... |  | | |

Evening major.
Yes sad day but was inevitable. I’ve never seen such a poor championship Hampshire team as this although we got close again in the 20/20’s and if it wasn’t for the mix up between Dawson and Weatherley we would probably have won it. We were weak in batting and bowling in the red ball game . Batters got in but then didn’t push on and bowers weren’t consistent.
I saw them win the championship in 1973 and it’s going to be a long time before I see that again. The consolation for me is managing to get Ashes tickets for the test at the Rose Bowl next summer. Can’t wait. |  |

Absolutely stunk the league out this season, the batting line up was atrocious, but you can't say this hasn't been coming for some time now.
Terrible decisions by the selectors, poor selection of the overseas players, and over reliance on Vince in previous seasons, followed by not replacing him, meant we were always going in one direction.
What really annoys me is that next year it's an ashes at the Rose Bowl, if Hampshire had been top flight they could've tried to capitalise on increased interest in the game and got people into the ground for county, but lets be honest it's a hard enough sell getting people in for the top division, getting them in for the second division will be almost impossible |  | | |

I did about 10 games this season on my membership 4 20/20 games, 4 one day cup games and 2 championship games. I’m so Pleased for Rod Bransgrove that he got his wish of giving The Rose Bowl test status . That was his dream . |
Sad times indeed for Hampshire.
I don’t attend now but well remember seeing their Championship winning side play at Bournemouth ( It was in Hampshire then ) during the 1961 season.
They were captained then by the very colourful charachter Colin Ingleby Mackenzie and also had a very fine bowler in Derek Shackleton.
Ingleby Mackenzie was a genuine Eaton educated toff who amongst other events in a colourful life was one of the last people to see Lord Lucan alive. Mackenzie died from a brain tumour and his funeral in St Paul’s Cathedral was attended by more than sixteen hundred people. [Post edited 18 Sep 19:48]

Like everything it's nuanced
The club couldn't have planned for losing John Turner, a real shame his career is over so young as he looked really promising whenever I saw him play. Also Liam Dawson's decision to retire from red ball cricket after only a couple of games into the season left us without a proper spinner and senior player in the side
Looking back James Vince, Kyle Abott, Mo Abbas, Liam Dawson and to a lesser extent Keith Barker really carried that side. The replacements simply haven't been good enough, Stoneman was a really poor signing, struggling in division 2 in a poor Middlesex side. Prest who seemed to being built up to be the new James Vince has regressed terribly, the fact that he can't get in this side is really telling. Too many players who are out of form or simply not good enough for the first division. How many different players have we used as openers this season?, I like Gubbins but he's not an opener, hopefully Patel is an improvement when he joins for next season
Just have to hope that Mayes, Jack and Lumsden develop and we can build a side around them, I'm relieved to see Abbott has signed an extension and seeing as he's one of the leading wicket takers this season in division 1, over 60 ffs and we're still bottom! He should clean up next season even if he will be pushing 40. Wouldn't be surprised if Baker left, he seems very ambitious and will no doubt be told that playing in division 2 will potentially affect his chances of playing test cricket
I would be interested to know what the new owners think of this, are they really that bothered about county cricket? [Post edited 18 Sep 19:54]

My premium membership renewal for 2027 was 270 pounds, 300 pounds for this 2026 season . You had to renew ( I would have anyway ) to get any chance of securing Ashes tickets for the Rose Bowl. This membership covers you for access to all championship, 20/20 and London cup games group stages only , you also get four complimentary tickets for a friend to use FOC, you also get discount on drinks and food in certain parts of the ground . I was also a member in the 70’s at Northlands road for years but I can’t remember the price . Yes the championship games are not well supported as many aren’t going to take time off work to watch it. | |

I'm part of the problem I suppose, only been to the Rose Bowl once so nowadays I'm a follower rather than supporter
As I've said before I thought it was a mistake when they stopped playing at Basingstoke, used to go to at least one day of the county game or the Sunday game, it was always really well attended.
One year we saw them play Durham, after tea me and my dad literally sat on a park bench under an oak tree and watched Shane Warne bowl an utterly mesmerising spell until stumps, all sounds a bit Enid Blyton but we didn't have lashings of ginger beer and a super tea, but we saw one of the worlds greatest bowlers on a club ground, absolutely magic | |

Majority of Ashes tickets £115 and £125.
The decline has been steady progress over the last few years, and the likes of Abbas,
Vince, Barker and finally Dawson has not been addressed, and the recruitment of overseas players for the red ball game has been appalling
At the same time we are still a great 20/20 team, and really competitive in the 50 over format
Hopefully the likes of youngsters like May, Jack, Lumsden, Neal and Currie will prosper in Division 2 of championship
However it goes I know that for most regular County Championship attending members, the relegation will not impact our attendance.
And we also have the first ever Ashes test match at Utlita Bowl to look forward to. |  | | |

Being of a certain vintage, that post transmitted me instantly back to 1961 .
I can name that team today (no google)..Marshall, Gray, Horton, Livingstone, Sainsbury, Ingleby Mac, Harrison, Cottam, Shack, White and Burden.
Mervyn Burden was the thinking man's Number 11 with a career batting average well south of 3.0.
In those days the touring team of the year played the Counties before and in between Tests.
One gloomy evening in 1963 I recall Mervyn came out to bat with Hants something like 135 for 9. Having noticed that the legendary Wes Hall was bowling Merv had put an extra pair of incontinence pads on just to be safe.
He took usual guard 12 inches outside leg stump and awaited his fate. Wes steamed in , all teeth and gold chains and unleashed a howitzer that turned all 3 stumps into firewood.
The whole ground then heard Merv utter " thanks Wes, I really appreciate that" | | | |

My dad played cricket against Ingleby- Mackenzie and Shackleton when his team Fordingbridge played a one off game against Hampshire. Freddie Trueman and a couple of other test cricketers played in The Fordingbridge team against Hampshire. My dad opened the batting for Fordingbridge scoring 21. I still have the paper clippings. | |

Colin Cowdrey was reaching the end of his career and was more than slightly over weight. When it was his turn to bat there was a mass chant of “ bring on fatty” from one of the beer tents. He duly arrived and dispatched the ball to all parts of the ground with consummate ease, proving that unlike today you didn’t need to be super fit to be a top flight player.
Somehow life seemed more relaxed with more fun in those days, but then again I suspect that previous generations have also all said the same as their years reach a conclusion. [Post edited 19 Sep 13:25]

Anyway he did so and the ball flew into the gloves of the wicket keeper who appealed and the umpire gave him out caught behind.
It didn't look out and you could see Marshall was quite agitated as he walked back to the pavilion, hitting the ground with his bat.
As he walked up the steps I said to him "Well played Malcolm a little unlucky" he turned round and said in a quite a loud Barbadian voice "I never F**king hit it man"
They were good days back then, take your own beer into the ground and sit back, under trees etc, now a lot of grounds including ours are soulless bowls, that overcharge for beer and food as you can't bring your own in anymore.
I went a few times to the Rose Bowl as it was called then but unless you drive it is difficult to get to and if you use the limited public transport it would take about 1 1/2 - 2 hours just to get back home.
I think the last game I went to there was about 2014, I used to love cricket both watching and playing, but i barely watch it now and have no real interest in it anymore |  |
