Based on my experience, I doubt a trade union would willingly fund a libel action, unless it was against one of their officials. As for no-win, no-fee, such litigation does not lend itself favourably and it would inevitably be a case of being funded up-front. Defamation law is a bottomless pit of costs and difficulties. I was only involved in two such cases, and was dragged unwillingly into both. Based on this minimal experience of handling such cases, two cautionary notes: for something to be defamatory, it had better not be true...just ask Mr. Depp!! And secondly, quantifying the compensation can often see the defamed out of kilter with the reality of what the injury to their character is actually worth...just ask some bloke off Corrie who valued his claim more than he was awarded!

Good luck with your Union Rep! If you could give an outline of the issue that would be helpful.
