We was in the 3rd division so that’s about 50 places closer to start with, there were 20 teams in the premier league then, 22 in the championship and we weren’t in the top 6 at the time .
Weren’t Vauxhall motors in the Northern premier league? So maybe 40 places lower than Macclesfield.

In 2002-03: PL = 20 teams, Div 1, 2 & 3 = 24 teams
When we got knocked out we were 6th in Division 2 (50th)

VMFC were in the Northern Premier League which at the time was one division below the Conference which for that season had 22 teams. VMFC ended up 3rd so presuming they were somewhere near the top when we played them so 18+24+22+3

Roughly 67 places.

Yes, the National League North/South didn't exist then (formed 2004/05) so the Northern Premier League was one level higher then than it is now.

If we'd lost that year to Hednesford Town or someone else with a "normal" name it'd be far less remembered than it still is IMO.

Thaere was no National League North at that time & the NPL was one of the three divisions a step below.

If you place both clubs as middle of the table, that would give 72 as the difference. Just to add, Vauxhall Motors were NOT a works team, but a semi professional team who finished 3rd that season, just below Accrington Stanley & Barrow.

EDIT I won't delete, but I should have read till the end of the thread & seen that Camberley & others had answered the question.
