Private medical cover.. [NON QPR] 20:57 - Jan 29 with 1300 viewsthame_hoops

Looking to buy a policy, it’s a minefield, I’m 42 and healthy so trying to take a policy while I’m still fit, can anyone recommend a company?

So far I’ve like Aviva, Bupa seems really expensive, Axa looks ok too

Any help appreciated 👍🏼

I’ve been with benenden since I started working in the post office in 1978.They are like a back up health service, but they don’t cover everything. It isn’t too expensive at about £10 a month, but seeing as I’ve never used them in almost 42 years I guess they are quite expensive.

I retired about 18 Months ago after being a Site Manager with the same Construction Company for close to 40 Years, our private health care alternated between BUPA and Aviva every year, I guess it all came down to cost.
What I will say is when I had the need to use them (seeing a specialist or whatever) both Companies systems were extremely quick and I was seen pronto (this also included physiotherapy).
Both Companies offered discounted rates for family members, you probably know this but private health care is taxable.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

I've worked at AXA-ppp for nearly 21 years and its a great company. I maybe a little biased but our customer service is (mostly) superb and we're fair with claims, never turning down eligible treatment

There are excellent ways to reduce the cost like a 6 week rule (where you have the treatment in the NHS if it's available in 6 weeks) excesses etc

If I can help guide you in any way PM me if you'd prefer.

Could be wrong but my understanding of Private medical cover (gleaned an admittedly long 20 odd years ago) meant their premiums covered medical help on non serious health problems but they'd pass you back to the poor old NHS to sort it out if anything serious came up!

Is that correct?

Use a broker. Arrange a meeting and tell them exactly what you are looking for. When engaging with a broker you should complete a privacy notice, this will allow you to advise them on how they should contact you in the future. If you haven't done this with the broker you contacted and they persist in calling you then next time they call, mention this and advise them that if they call once more then you will be reporting them to the Information Commissioner. They are breaking GDPR rules.

But a broker should understand exactly what your requirements are, budget etc and will have access to the whole of the market to provide you with the best recommendation.

I am a Broker and have just set up my own with Aviva after doing my research.

They are very good and if you select all covers it will be a bit dearer but worth it.

Go direct as it's cheaper.

It may be true for some cheaper policies but generally that is not an accurate description.

All policies are different, for example mine has an excess of about £800 which makes you think twice about claiming.

They do cover serious illnesses like cancer, with private treatment and sometimes they pay to use NHS facilities e.g radiotherapy but the customer attends as a private patient and queuing is at a minimum.

What they don't usually cover beyond initial treatment is chronic conditions.

We have had a policy since about 1991 and it's a kind of trap as the older you get, the more you feel you have to keep paying the increasing premiums as its more likely you will need it.

i have paid for private medical for the last 20 years since i packed up working.......i have been with Saga, Bupa, Aviva, PPP, Vitality and others.

I am currently with PPP/AXA because it was the best deal for my wife and I. Previous two years I was with Vitality because they were the better for us.

I suggest you hunt around and get quotes, its a minefield deciding what type of policy you want. They all do deals, they change almost every year, you get discounts for this and that but the key thing is to get the right policy, if you want cancer cover without waiting then it becomes more expensive but primarily that is what i have private medical for.

Vitality do a policy based on fitness rewards. I was looking into this one as run, people get rewards based on healthy lifestyle. It is good as a preventative option though at my age end up seeing the physio more often than Matthew Rose so going to look into how much physiotherapy it will cover.

I have been with AXA/PPP via work for around 15 years that I don't have to pay for.

Thankfully I rarely use but the odd occasion when I have had a sport injury and need Physio they have been really good. One injury led me to having MRI scans etc and seeing specialists and there was never any question around paying out.

They have got a little tighter recently with Physio but this is more down to Physios abusing the system when they have a private healthcare patient. Just means that they will authorise 5 sessions initially rather than 10 and you check in with them after 5 to see progress. If you need more they grant. Physios (from what I hear) were just seeing people 2/3 times per week and using all 10 quickly. Loads got struck off the approved list.

When I retired and lost the company-provided health cover, I used a broker called 'Usay Compare' to find cover that my wife and I could afford. I have no connection with them, other than being their customer, but, they did well.
To get the lowest rates, look hard at paying a certain amount yourself - the 'excess' levels.

Hit the nail on the head there.

Virtually all cost containment in the PMI industry revolves around over-treating specialists/practitioners and our unwillingness to let it continue. If we do nothing premiums will rise to be unaffordable, particularly as medical inflation is already high due to new procedure, drug etc.
