Totally agree - I'm afraid we seem to be taking a short term approach again - Balogun might be fantastic for us for this season, but he'll stop someone else (Dunne maybe) playing and developing and becoming a saleable asset

I suspect it’s the club that’s the issue, the writing, on the other hand, is probably cathartic.

At the moment I am really unsure about the Beale appointment and I guess the way the team is playing they are as well. Today's game at Watford is a big test for Beale, if we fold and heads go down, going to be a difficult one to recover from in my opinion. Hoping that we can give it a go today and get a result.

I suppose though that there are at least 3 people with objectives that all overlap or contradict each other and a compromise / fudge needs to be found. A pure view, from Hoos and Ferdinand, would be to develop the training ground , invest in youth and developing other teams cast offs to make the model more sustainable. But this is long term and currently producing very mixed results especially with the strikers. The other route to sustainability is a new ground with greater non football revenue opportunities but that must be even more long term. The manager needs to protect and develop his reputation and will rightly baulk at being offered Hamailanen and Kakay as first choice full backs. The owners as you say in the review are spending millions a year to stand still and enjoy the glamour of a week of home games against Blackpool and Rotherham. So despite all the good words about sustainability and developing youth there might be pressure to be better right now. I really struggle to see why anyone would want to own a championship club. From an owners perspective the answer has to be premiership or goodbye. There are contradictions with the publicly expressed views from the club but i can see why we get here. The fact is that all recent managers have concluded that the current crop of youth team players are in the main not good enough and to achieve mid table / a shot at the play offs loans are needed. For me Warburton was sacked for a dreadful run of form second half of the season. I suspect that if Beale does not achieve promotion or play offs next year or the year after he will also be fired so that pressure must drive any managers outlook. He has given Armstrong and Kakay game time and none of the others have been battering the door down be in the first team. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The DOF system is meant to override and prevent those overlaps and contradictions.

I think we all need to stop pretending we have a DoF. We have someone appointed to appease the fans when the tide started to turn. It’s worked a treat. Those that think LF is doing a good job defend him, those that don’t, don’t. Either way it’s a distraction.

Utter tosh. What happens if Dickie or Dunne gets injured? Salter is already out until October. We have been watching Rangers implode on the pitch since January and that is largely through injuries to the first eleven. The squad players are simply not good enough. If and when we do finally get our first eleven out, just look at the bench. We absolutely need a strong first eleven and a strong bench. I have no doubt we will be playing with 3 at the back more often than not when we actually have enough fit players to do so. If we stick with it , we will need at least 4 good options to provide cover. Rotation over a long season is inevitable. All of our so called saleable assets will get plenty of game time.

Don't think it's that simple, DejR. There's more than two camps. I don't belong to either right now, but have belonged in both at various times. I do think that he has done a fine job in reducing the wage bill and managing the recovery from the car crash of the Hughes and Redknapp era. That doesn't mean, though, that we should stop analysing his current performance and wondering if another DoF could bring us further. I think that's allowed.

I’ll sit in this chair on Sunday and do a big, flouncy match report with loads of film references and song lyrics, every bit as over the top as this preview is. It’ll make my whole week, though it doesn’t have much competition." That was for Clive
