non qpr on 22:40 - Sep 27 with 1857 views | colinallcars | Prices in London have always been high of course but haven't risen by as much as expected. Wetherspoons are of course pretty cheap at about £2.30 for a pint of ale. Prices for ale otherwise are typically £5 to £5.50 in west London. Guinness and lager and craft beers a bit more. When I was younger, I used to drink about 50 pints a week which if translated to modern times would be an expenditure of circa £275. Sadly, it looks inevitable that prices will rise further - just in tine for Xmas and New Year.

Looks like spoons are in a bit of bother too - selling off 32 pubs to avoid losses and 1 billion in debt with rising interest rates.

I wonder how the White Horse manage to undercut the Shepherd’s Bush spoons?Especially with the extreme bouncers on the door stopping more than about 75 people in the place on match days.

Someone told me that the majority of Weatherspoons don’t make a profit but exist to stop rivals getting a foothold and to accumulate property value. I’m guessing this is Tim’s end game. [Post edited 28 Sep 2022 8:42]

£6.50 for a Neck Oil sounds cheap in that part of London! I was in a pub in Battersea last saturday, charging £6.50 for a shit Guinness. Rarely stray out of the Askew these days, where £12.40 can still get you two pints of Guinness and a Kronenbourg. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That ain’t beer they’re selling, I had a pint of Smiths (only ale they do) last home game, I backed it because it tasted of chemicals & asked if it was the first one out of the pump. The miserable Aussie landlady said it was the second, so no refund there, ordered a sh1t pint of Carlsberg instead. Time to move on

I frequent many pubs around West London, mostly Fuller's who have a multitude of pubs compared to a few years back. Just over a fiver seems the norm. However, I was in the Blackbird in Earls Court last week with my Old Dutch and a pint of Hophead was, I think £5.30, but a posh large G&T for her was £14.80! She can go out on her own in future !

That would make sense as the pub management companies have long been property play businesses. My brother used to run pubs and is familiar with the game plan; invest zero money in the buildings, let tenants impale themselves on hopeless business models and when they throw in the towel sell the buildings for development.

Not true. JD Wetherspoon generated operating profit of £129m in 2017, £132m in 2018 and £131m in 2019. They have regularly sold pubs over the years that are unprofitable, cannibalise trade from other nearby (more profitable) Spoons etc. This group of 32 disposals are being sold for the same reason with the added factor that Spoons have struggled more than their competitors coming out of the pandemic as many of their older customers haven’t returned. You only have to look at the average Spoons to see it’s not a property play. They are generally awkward buildings, often single aspect over one large trade floor, listed ex cinemas, bingo halls etc. Not the type of properties that tend to significantly appreciate in value.
