I’m looking at going over for the cricket in February, but I can’t afford the barmy army prices this time, mainly because the single room supplement adds £1800 to an already expensive 3 weeks,so I’m looking at the cheapest flights, which obviously take a lot longer than more direct/expensive ones.
But it’s the internal travelling from tauranga to wellington that I’m not sure of.Any tips from our Kiwi friends would be much appreciated. There are no trains between the two places, but there is a bus I hear.
I also want to spend a few days exploring the South Island, but I have no idea on what’s the best plan for that.
TIA

The south island of NZ, truly Godsown.

I've been a few times, do a loop around it. I started in Christchurch going anticlockwise. Up to Nelson, and I didn't get right down south, as I cut in from Milford Sound for a few days in Wanaka and Queenstown, before getting back to CC.

Wine, mountains, glaciers (well what's left of them), beaches, hiking, biking, nature, and a lot more besides. A few days, man you are selling yourself short. I wouldn't go for anything less than 3 weeks. Best hire some wheels me thinks.

Now just hold there and a friendly Kiwi will come along and update you. And you know what as for those Kiwis, as the old song goes...'they don't know how lucky they are!'

I’d love to go for longer but I’m worried that the Mrs would sell the house if I’m away any more than 3-4 weeks. But it’s a long way to go for just a quick visit.Especially when the flights home take around 30-35 hours.

Echo all of that.

The South Island is the most beautiful place I've ever been outside of Loftus Road.

Can I add in the beautiful beaches and hiking in and around the Abel Tasman National Park, and the Whale Watching in Kaikoura (most if not all trips are approved as whale-friendly by theWWF).

Have a great time!

Happy to help - trains a bit of a non starter down here, mainline Akld to Wgtn just about exists but far cheaper to fly. Tauranga is approx 2.5hrs from Auckland & expect lot cheaper to travel back & then get to Wellington. Would be long day on a bus but don’t know $$.
Haven’t done all of Sth Island myself but echo comments already made & have to get to Queenstown, maybe via Chch & see Lake Tekapo on route.
Drop me a note as get into planning if can be of help - there’s also gang of us who have semi regular pub lunch to discuss QPR goings on here in Auckland so if need a fix of that during trip we could schedule one in.
Hope weather better by then (it will be) as bloody awful week here coming into summer.

Check out Qatar airlines via Doha some good deals for next year.New Zealand is an amazing country lucky to have been many times.Prefer the north on the South Island around Picton where many people just drive through but the Queen Charlotte track is a must if you have 4/5 days to spare or the Abel Tasman track.Driving to places takes a lot longer due to not so many dual carriageways and slow traffic due to some great views on route. No point trying to see all of North and south islands in one hit best to make the most of a few areas and leave the rest for the next time because I guarantee you will move heaven and earth to go back.

I'm heading over for a month and both Tests. Two weeks on South Island before the cricket. See you at the Mount!

Most will be bussing it from Tauranga to Welly. However, you could take the 25 min (ish) flight to Auckland then get the train down to Welly (or just fly Auck to Welly). I've not made my mind up which to do yet.

Roll on another action packed Test Match tomorrow!

Auckland’s nice. I went a few years ago for the cricket. I can say Eden Park may be a great rugby venue, but it’s. Ot a cricket ground. Luckily for you I think they’re going back to the Basin Reserve which is a great ground, almost village green like. Tickets will be cheap too.
Wellington is well worth a visit, great city.
South island, Christchurch is nice, but Queenstown is wonderful, lots to do and the scenery, including Milford Sound and glaciers are awesome.
Enjoy. You’ll love it.

The south island is gobsmackingly beautiful. Just one stunning view after another, up there with the likes of Switzerland IMHO.

Went shortly before the covid lockdown started in early 2020. The airbnb place we rented was at the end of the lake in Queenstown and had the most ridiculous view across the water and mountains. Never wanted to leave. Was hugely jealous of the locals living in the same street.

The next in line of the Boston family lives in Whangarei. He found taking his pilot's licence for small aircraft the quickest way to get around. Apparently, he redesigned Christchurch or something because it kept falling over.

Auckland is an incredible city too, Stow.

I love the ocean, and if I had to live in a City for the rest of my life I'd pick Auckland. Ferries, boats, beaches, islands, chill. It just seems so lovely. And the Coromandelso close, and great beaches and hikes north of the Town.

My brother lives in Wellington. Lucky enough to been over numerous times.

Cricket at The Basin reserve is amazing. Never seen England there but have been to NZ v Pak and domestic stuff too.

Long distance train travel is slow but some of the views are breathtaking. Went from Wellington to Auckland on last visit, turned out with a broken ankle. Coach/bus travel much cheaper but everything much slower than here, you’ll understand when you see roads.

Once spent 3 weeks touring South Island. Dolphins in Milford Sound, Christchurch where I think I’d live if I ever emigrated. Queenstown adventure capital. My favourite place on the planet though is Kaikoura. Seeing whales with snow on the mountains in the background. The walk round the peninsula blew me away.

If you think I can help with anything let me know but those living there can probably be of more practical help.

Another vote for the South Island - we hired a motor home and drove round, was just amazing.

If you can get to the Pancake Rocks on the west coast they are well worth it, unlike anything I'd seen before.
