We'd actually had a pretty good run with him, very poor recently though.

The lack of action over the time wasting was pathetic in that last game. 3 cards 89 mins, the first - complete waste of time (excuse the pun!)

Little bit in the match preview about the effect of geography in this which might interest geeks like us. We are one of only two London teams (plus Watford and Luton) in a heavily skewed Northern league this season. We are therefore getting the south eastern based referees a disproportionately large amount. Luton have had Gavin Ward (Surrey) 28 times, including their last two away games, more than any other team in the EFL by at least five. We've had him for two of our last three home games. Ward's last four appointments have featured the same three teams on three occasions. Out of his 19 games in the Championship this season, only six have been up north. It's worse with Stroud, who of course can't do Luton as a Luton fan which rules out one of the few southern teams for him. We have had Stroud more than any other club. Stroud has already been appointed to four Coventry home games this season, and of his 20 games they have all been southern bar three - this in a league where 12 of the teams are M62 or higher. After this week we'll have had Stroud and Ward 12 times in under two years - in that time we've had Geoff Eltringham (Durham based, I quite like him) once, and Leigh Doughty (new, Blackpool, liked him last season) twice. Stroud hasn't refereed Huddersfield for a year, and is yet to have them this season. He has been appointed to more QPR games in the last month (dropped out at Coventry) than he's had games involving Hull and Huddersfield in two years. I know we don't want referees travelling big distances etc but I think they've got to balance it out a bit if only for fairness. Four of Preston's 13 home games this year have been done by the same bloke!

That IS interesting - no irony I promise. Wonder if that is a relatively new thing brought about by the cost, saving a few polar bears or the simple difficulty, as you have oft mentioned, of getting from a to b in this country at the moment. On the flip side it SHOULD mean we get to see more of one our favourites James Linington (IOW based for the non geeks reading) but I agree it isn't really 'fair' - not quite the right word, but agree with your premise, all clubs should get all the referees available as evenly spread as possible. Lets not forget they ARE full time professionals - as such travel and all that entails should just come with the job.

We get Linington a fair bit, which is a good thing, I think he's about as good as there is at our level now, Cardiff H blunder not withstanding. Six appointments with him in 2.5 season, including two already this. I think he must have upset somebody though because while Keith has only had to go north of Birmingham 3/20 games this season, Linington has already been to Huddersfield, Hull x2, Sheff Utd x2, Stoke, Blackburn and Sunderland in 18 appts (8/18). All of this is only furthering my theory that Stroud has some dodgy pictures of somebody on file.

Slight name dropping here, but I was on the line to an ex high level ref, recently obvioulsy very Ex, if he's now on the same game as me!, I actually mentioned 1 northern midweek game of ours JL did referencing his IOW roots and he said "Oh, he won't mind" So he either has a lousy home life or more seriously/likely, he's one of those who doesn't complain, just gets on with it. I suspect your mate (cheap shot, sorry) being the most senior EFL referee has an 'input' into his appointments that maybe others don't! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Saffa the QPR fan who lives on IOW sees him on the ferry a lot. I think it's £80 a time that ferry now so I hope he's on expenses!

Thanks Clive for the information. I also found it interesting , but surprising. I assume that the 28 you quote for Ward refereeing Luton is throughout his career. That must rival Webb in charge of Manchester United games! Without wishing you to spend more time trawling through the records, I assume our two officials for this week also have frequent trips to the four clubs along the M4?

If you are interested in this stuff transfermarkt.co.uk has the referee statistics per club. Here's Keithy... https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/keith-stroud/bilanz/schiedsrichter/566 And soccerbase.com is hot on their stats https://www.soccerbase.com/referees/referee.sd?referee_id=885 Howard Webb did, indeed, do more Man Utd games than anyone else - 47 (29-6-12). https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/howard-webb/bilanz/schiedsrichter/318 M4 corridor clubs, what we calling that Bristol City, Reading, Cardiff and Swansea in our league? Keith has had five games with Swansea this season and last (they hate him too), four with Bristol City, two with Reading, four with Cardiff = 15. Taking four M62 corridor clubs in our league (Hull, Huddersfield, Preston, Blackburn) over the same period he's had them 11, but let's look at those games shall we. They include Peterborough A, Bristol City Ax2, Swansea Ax3, West Brom A, Coventry A and Reading A).
| Thursday's referee on 17:32 - Dec 28 with 1271 views | terryb | Thanks Clive, I think that Swansea fans detest Stroud more than we do, but you personally might be the exception to this! Perhaps the club could pay for Stroud & Ward to relocate to Carlisle or Berwick. Any FFP breach that incurred would be worth any points deduction! | | | |
| Thursday's referee on 17:39 - Dec 28 with 1249 views | Northernr | Stroud has actually only refereed north of Birmingham nine times in 53 appointments back to the start of last season. | | | |

I'm sure you know the Webb thing is an internet fantasy - he's a very proud Yorkshire man and Rotherham fan. On Clive's match preview theme - A recent "football truth" - The World Cup final referee was so good because he was an ex - professional. Turns out he never played a professional game in his life and gave up even his lowly amateur playing career at 21 to concentrate on refereeing. Still if Martin Keown and Gary Lineker think all the refereeing problems are going to be sorted by recruiting ex players used to earning thousands per week to games where they'll get £30/£40 per match for the first few years (If they are lucky) then who am I to argue?

I was not inferring that Webb was a United fan, although I certainly didn't know he is a Rotherham fan. The comment was based on how the PGMOL appear to over appoint officials to certain clubs & this was a prime example. Previously, Poll seemed to be given far too many Arsenal - United matches.

Heard him at a Referees Association talk years back - very funny man. I think you're right re his Man Utd games, but as their best years coincided with his, not a surprise really.
