| Saipan (the movie) 09:47 - Jan 16 with 1920 views | stainrods_elbow | Anyone seen it? I did last night, though I'm not really sure I'd recommend it. Steve Coogan is a fine character actor, of course, and is passable in the role, but he's playing Mick McCarthy miles down age, while Éanna Hardwicke does an OK job as Keane but also looks and sounds nothing much like him. No spoilers given or needed (we all know the story and its variants), but I agree with the review that critiqued it for falling rather lamely between documentary and drama while also lazily replicating certain myths around the pivotal blow-up between the protagonists, including the fallacy that Keane insulted MM's Irishness etc., and risibly exaggerating the Irish players' drunkeness etc. As we know, Keane never played in a World Cup as a result, though the Irish team went out manfully to Spain on pens in the quarter final. I don't much like him for his occasional bouts of retributive psychosis, but I do admire him for his relentless and rare professionalism. Imagine him in his twilight years bossing our midfield and sorting out the likes of Varane and Madsen - and probably bawling out the manager from time to time while he's at it! Excellence is a function of perfectionism - every single time. The best line in the film for me is where the struggling MM tells Keane 'I'm doing my best, Roy', who fires back 'You should be saying '"How do I get better?"' [Post edited 16 Jan 9:52]

I do remember we had a good side back then and still sticks with me what we could have done with Keane playing.

| Saipan (the movie) on 17:45 - Jan 16 with 1398 views | Paddyhoops | Should have beaten Spain .They were outstanding on. the day. As for Keane . He divided the country. Not sure why , he let his country down . Pure and simple. Just my opinion. Everybody had one at the time. | | | |

How can it be both 'pure and simple (every time)' and just your opinion?

Once Gareth Southgate got a play (musical?) written and performed about him it was open season. I’m waiting for the Steve McLaren in Jamaica film … Hair Island In The Sun.
