I thought it was a big advantage for PSG last night to win both coin tosses so that they took the penalties in front of their own fans and went first. Two tosses has certainly been the norm in recent years, but I'm sure years back there was just one coin toss and the winner had the choice of 'ends' or going first with the loser making the remaining choice. This seemed much fairer and is similar to tennis where winner can either choose to serve/receive or pick ends, with loser making the other choice.
Does anyone know when this changed in football and why? I personally think the old system was fairer. |  | | |  |

There was probably an annual meeting at FIFA where they realised they hadn’t changed enough to justify a few salaries so it was an easy thing to add to the agenda. |  | | |

Yes agree with this. I think going first is more important than which end. Players are pretty much immune to whatever they hear from the terraces and can block it out. But going first clearly gives you a psychological edge as clearly demonstrated by the 5th pen.
Annoyed with Eze though. That wasn’t psychological pressure, that was trying to be too clever. At almost 28 he hasn’t played enough top level games to have the big game experience yet and as such should have just hammered it low and hard into the corner. Disappointed with how he played when he came on, I know Arsenal’s tactics of hoofing it long didn’t suit him, but once or twice when he got on the ball, I felt his decision -making was off. He has the ability to drive at a (tiring) defence and opted not to. | | | |

Statistically there’s a surprisingly big advantage to going first. Something like 55% are won by the team going first.
You’d think shooting in front of your own fans helps but never seen a stat on it if there is one. | | | |

Just make a rule that states once a penalty taker starts his run he has to complete it without stalling along the way.
Failing that, if a taker stops his run then the keeper is allowed to sprint from his line and flatten him. |  | | |

but certainly ‘narrow the angle’ a bit, I thought they had introduced a rule some years back that you had to continue your run once started?
