Stay or Go, Ollie? 08:31 - Feb 4 with 7763 views | davman | So, before yesterday, I was resigned to having no choice that Ollie had to stay, but that dirge yesterday has finally persuaded me that change is needed. Not now, you understand, but at the end of the season. If Ollie gets us to the clear out point still in this division, he'll have done a great job, but it should then be, "thanks, Ian, but it's time for you to go". Something has to change with that playing squad, because they are clearly not as bad as they have been playing and, if we can find someone to take our basket case on, we should give them a chance. Just get us over that bloody survival line asap!

Stay or Go, Ollie? on 14:16 - Feb 4 by Esox_Lucius | I have kept out of this one since I never wanted IH back as manager anyway and it probably clouds my judgement to some extent. The thorny issue of who? if not IH, is usually the trapdoor to many posters input and something I wish to address here with my three penny worth. I agree with IH staying until the end of the season regardless of where we finish as doing otherwise could prove to be a gigantic shot in our own foot. If IH is to be disposed of as manager at the end of the season, would he be prepared to stay on, as Chris Ramsey did, in a different role as assistant to the new boss (more later) rather than face an uncertain time out of work and a declining win percentage? I really like what he has done wrt fitness and motivation of players, there seems to be a good team spirit among the players. I have real misgivings over his tactical nous and his utter unwillingness to to see that pumping the ball up to Smith, or whoever is burdened with the "target man" label that game is almost entirely fruitless, more so in light of the fact that on the occasions he wins the ball it rarely lands even close to a hooped shirt ergo, lost possession. This seems to be a real factor in our game as any header by a QPR player is almost guaranteed to be snaffled up by the opposition whereas our opponents seem to be in the opposite camp no matter how poor they are playing. Something for the coaching staff to address with new drills? Finally, who? I have tried to take into consideration that IH isn't on a lot of money if the stories are to be believed and anyone who replaces him will only be offered a similar salary. The replacement will also be given the same remit of working on a shoestring budget or worse due to potential FFP sanctions, a real deal killer for many an aspiring manager I assume. The replacement would also be tasked with converting cheap deals into profit machines and likewise with the academy players; this too would rule out any number of potential new managers and it was the above that gave me the head scratching task of who then. The only one I can think of at this time (at the time before IH was appointed I was all for us trying to get Chris Wilder as he had almost 8 years success at both Oxford & Northampton (both close to where I live so it was in the spotlight a bit more) and in retrospect I feel I was on the right tracks so feel justified in my offering for IH's replacement, step forward Michael Appleton currently assistant Manager at Leicester City and is probably not high profile enough for LCFC to appoint manager on any but a temporary basis. He is only 42, forward thinking and had a good track record at Oxford United and brought in Kemar Roofe & John Lundstram in his second season showing an eye for a good player. The reason he may be within our budget is his poor record at Blackpool & Blackburn, perhaps that's a NW thing LOL In summary I feel our options are severely limited in what we can do next and rest assured, if I think of any other replacements for IH so as to cheer up the Holloway out brigade, I will be certain to share my astuteness with you all LOL. |
What about if the board say 'more of the same' as in no money, more young'uns, and increased austerity for 2019/20. Might as well keep him no? It think when we are stable and have a real chance a push maybe get some young hotstuff in. Not a clue when that will happen though!

Stay or Go, Ollie? on 13:22 - Feb 4 by QPR_John | "Would a new manager do any better with this squad, it's debatable but personally don't think it would be a massive improvement with these players" The only conclusion from that argument is that the entire squad needs replacing as no manager can get more out of it. So it comes down to who do you trust to do it. |
I don't think the squad needs a complete clearout. Squad size does need reducing however. Get JET the hell out of my football club please. It's amazing what difference 2 or 3 decent quality additions can make to a team. Lack of creativity and goals needs addressing. [Post edited 4 Feb 2018 15:16]

It will be erratic whoever is in charge while we root through bargain bins and take risks on youngsters. Please don't think I'm a Olly superfan by the way, I have eyes. We need to shrug this reputation for fickleness the club has. [Post edited 4 Feb 2018 14:53]

I’d keep Ollie to the end of the season, but look to bring in Graham Potter as soon as his involvement in the UEFA league is over. Give him time to learn the squad and the league. Let him take over full control next season also I’d look to keep Ollie in some capacity next season. Maybe as a performance analyst
Stay or Go, Ollie? on 15:32 - Feb 4 with 1638 views | actonman | If Holloway is in charge next season and assuming we stay up,I'm afraid we will go down playing in front of less than 10k fans . We have been sh!te for a few years now so can't blame Ian for that but ffs look who's been here. Redknapp , the bonus game king ? Ramsey , the caretaker Jfh , the bore draw specialist Now olly the tactician. of that lot , only jfh was a forward thinking appointment even though it didn't work out

My post was fully in keeping with the board saying more of the same etc. I think IH will slip further next season as he is, for the most part, tactically inept IMO. I did suggest we keep him on if he is willing as a fitness/ motivation coach but not as a manager. I would expect MB to be let go as well, Curtis Fleming possibly.

We've been fairly comfortable outside the relegation zone this season so far. I don't see any reason for us to suddenly nosedive next season. That's a very negative outlook. A lot depends on what happens between now and next season of course If what I'm reading on here a lot is to be believed, your prediction that crowds might drop next year could be true. Quite a few people seem to have fallen out of love with the game. To blame that on Ian Holloway is unfair and to think that changing manager will fix it, highly unlikely in my opinion. I predict more of the same next year but mildly hopeful of a slight improvement that might see us flirting with top half.

We should be sounding out our new manager now. Also hoping that Penrice has some names of a few diamonds to improve the squad.

Stay or Go, Ollie? on 13:44 - Feb 4 by SimonJames | Ditch Ollie in the summer and get someone who will give us a stable, recognisable playing system, not a tombola. A plan A and a Plan B that every player understands completely. Then make sure all recruitment is based on that i.e. if you're not going to use wingers then don't recruit wingers. (Even if we finish 15th don't be fooled into thinking that IH has the vision or skill to take this club further. He doesn't. He's was spent force at Palarse and he underlined it with his failure at Millwall.) |
We have a stable system - its just that lots of fans don't agree with it. We were awful v BC, even if not injured I would have dropped Luongo and Furlong anyway, you can't argue with dropping Baptiste - he was poor v BC as well. Smyth and Sylla injured so not sure what genius plan he's supposed to come up with to improve up top? His subs yesterday actually worked well & not much he could do about Manning's brain fade. Lynch also justified his selection - having a very good game I thought. Getting really really bored with OH out threads - which now we're (relatively) safe seem to be turning to he's got to go ....in the summer Its getting very tedious

The crowds dwindling is not just down to olly but the football has been utter gash for years now. How many games have we played where we have only mustered 1 shot on target in 90 mins ? As I say not all down to Ian as his predecessors have all been equally sh!t. If we are going to change then ffs get it right , no point in getting another clogger or we will be back to square one. Tbh I'm not sure the owners are capable of making the correct decision anyway ? (still irks me they put Ramsey in charge of keeping us up after redknapp hobbled off) What I do know is Holloway is tactically inept and more suited to football from a bygone era.

Just my opinion from what I see. What I do know is we will be fighting to stay up rather than fighting to go up . Flirting with relegation 2 seasons on the trot and we're not safe yet anyway. I just want to go to football and be entertained. On the whole we have been rubbish for years but there's always been something to get me looking forward to Saturday but I'm struggling to think of much these days. The sad thing for me was looking around a half empty stadium for what was a six pointer in one of the most crucial seasons in our history . Stay or Go, Ollie? on 17:31 - Feb 4 with 1456 views | BklynRanger | A big part of this Director of Football/Coaching set up is supposed to be that we can recruit the right players in isolation to who the manager is. If that's happening then the decision about Olly should be separate from any issues re playing staff - something that we've obviously been dealing with for years now. So we should just treat if like any other job situation imo - see how he does for the rest of the season, what his ideas are for next etc etc. And make a decision based on that. It would be hard to see him making a strong case to be able to stay if there wasn't at least some improvement.

There are six teams who are averaging a point a game or less. That is historically worse than average, nailed-on relegation form and they have been cheerfully doing it for most of the season. Three of those clubs will exit this year and all the remaining clubs will have to fight just a little bit harder to get points. Those bottom six flatter us but, god bless 'em, at the moment they are what is keeping us safe.

Stay or Go, Ollie? on 23:08 - Feb 4 with 1296 views | EalingHoop81 | I expect FFP is a major and relevant issue here. Whether you support Olly or not as Manager I doubt we can get rid of him even if the Board were keen unless relegation was very much on the cards. Olly signed for 2.5 years, I think, so if we were to sack him we would likely be obliged to pay out his contract (or come to a settlement). From an accounting perspective that’s an onerous contract and would be a hit to the P&L immediately (irrespective of when the cash is paid). So if we are close to breaching FFP, 16 or 17 months of Olly’s contract may well push us over the edge. Seems like a big price to pay for a bit for excitement over the next couple of months......

not sure we've flirted much with relegation in the last 2 seasons, were only ever in danger last season with 2 to play and 5 points clear so was still a healthy gap, this year we've never been closer than 5 points to the bottom 3 either.

Last season we finished two points clear with an inferior GD. Had we not beaten Forest we would have gone down. More of a snog and a fumble than mere flirtation.

Must be grim at HQ. But it's been grimmer. Folks are hedging their bets in grim times, with an uncertain future. 7 years of austerity takes it toll. I dont blame any one for not going now. Stay or Go, Ollie? on 01:53 - Feb 5 with 1213 views | Hooped_Pullie | Assuming we can stay up this season (and with 16 games to go and a 10 point gap from the bottom three, that's a big assumption right now) I would go with those who say that if things remain pretty much unchanged, we may well go down next season. Given that only a small few players are out of contract (and I think we can assume that Mackie won't be asked to extend) we could at the most see around half a dozen new faces or less during the summer. The crowds and atmosphere at HQ are sad indeed : 15 years ago, in the division below, we were getting significantly more fans in, and how the place used to rock. Personally, I would have loved to have gone yesterday, but my current state of health won't support spending 2/3 hours sitting outdoors in the temperatures we're currently experiencing. Once milder conditions prevail, I'll return. As regards the managerial situation, and again making the assumption that Holloway goes at the end of the season, I'd say that the already mentioned Michael Appleton would be a reasonable shout : I would prefer us though to be the Club to take a chance on bringing Graham Potter back to English football. It may be controversial, but I could also see Clint Hill doing at least as good a job with us as Neil Harris has done at the Den. Warburton and Clement are of course also looking for new opportunities, as they say, and may be worth talking to. So, there are options to consider. We are unlikely to survive simply treading water in this fiercely competitive division for a third season in a row unless something changes, though - on that, I would agree with others who have a similar viewpoint.

The thing is, genuinely, this has the potential to be the grimmest of the grim. Remember last time we spent a few seasons slipping down and quietly went into Administration and needed a £10m loan from an international loan shark to keep us in business? Remember how £10m was seen as the end of the world? Although this lot have "written off" £250m, do you think they will sell the club for £10m and walk away? I doubt it. So that is why we need to worry about next season and the season after that. That "debt" means that we can do no more this time than sit back and hope that this lot turn it around as there is no other solution out there...
