Excluding Iraq, and letting Gordon brown loose, Blair wasn't too bad. Better than any current options. But I suppose you can get nostalgic for anything

Well there you go then, you now have Chuka Umunna to return you to the good old days New Labour Mk2 Just as soon as he has a by-election, will you be moving to Streatham to vote for him?

Has ha, no, I don't particularly like him, but he is better than corbyn and mcdonnell. As joey Barton put it, it's like choosing between three rough birds

Well let's see if the people of Streatham think the same He is calling for a "peoples vote" on Brexit so should have no issues with a by-election.

I'm sure he'd win a by election. I don't agree with him that we should have another referendum either, i think they should all just sign the sodding deal. My nightmare combination though is a no deal brexit followed by a corbyn government.

Well he should p1ss a by-election given that 78.6% of people in his borough voted to remain.

They should all face a by-election.They stood for the Labour Party when they were elected, and now they are independents. If they had any morals they put their faith in the electorates in their constituencies, but I won’t hold my breath.

Then he should be calling a by-election as an independent and allow a Labour member to stand for Labour.

Maybe they will. Give them a chance it's only been a few hours! I'd say that Umunna would have a pretty good chance of winning given that he's one of few MP's calling for a second referendum and his borough if overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the EU.
Seven gone from Labour on 12:20 - Feb 18 with 5189 views | OakR | Would be interesting to see if others fro the Tories and Labour did this also and if it gave rise to a potential new party - Macron's party in France came fro nothing in France to victory in less than 2 years I think - some inept opposition helped, but May and Corbyn are hardly formidable opponents. I suspect not much else will happen, but let's see.

Could not agree more. Any MP has the right to leave the party they stood for but should stand again in a by-election.

But if we have left with or without a deal in 6 weeks, it's all a bit pointless, as he will be as an independent in a GE

They Independant Group was registered as a business on January 14th, a month before Labour’s publication on disciplinary proceedings against Anyi Semitism. So to quote that pubclication as a reason for the split is a bit disingenuous to say the least. Expect more to follow and no by elections. Whenever a GE happens expect votes to be chipped off all three major parties with Labour losing the most. None of the 7 will be elected to Parliament but another Tory or Tory lead government will be delivered. I’ve knocked on doors for some these people despite thinking they were cvnts. It’s a shame they couldn’t show Labour grassroots the same respect.

I'd say it's unlikely, they'll hang on as long as possible. Only one of the twenty odd MPs who defected from Labour to the SDP in the early 80s resigned their seat to fight a by-election and he lost. Even if they don't resign it's highly likely they'll lose their seats at any subsequent General Election. In the 1983 GE only four of those that defected then went on to win under the SDP banner.
