The new Sunderland? 07:52 - Jan 29 with 5826 views | SimplyNico | Step forward West Ham? Interesting piece in the Times this morning about the seeming existential threat that relegation would have for them. They have a collection of crocks, has beens and never weres on long term, expensive contracts. They don't even have a ground to raise finance against. Interesting season finale for them.

The new Sunderland? on 17:02 - Jan 29 by stevec | They don’t have a ground to raise finance against but they do have 57000 supporters. Having a bad time through poor management at the moment but with the unbelievably low rent and size of support I’d rather be in their shoes than ours. That was the deal of the century and suspect the running track will disappear when the council get sick of funding the place. The rent is pretty much set in stone so assuming they avoid relegation this’ll be a temporary blip. |
I don’t think they have 57,000 supporters The cheap tickets both pay on the day and season tickets have been snapped up by tourists and people who fancy watching Premier League football. I know a few non West Ham fans who bought them because they were so cheap and pick and choose who they watch them flog the other ones. If they go down they won’t be getting those numbers be lucky to pull 30,000 at home to Barnsley on a Tuesday night and the stadium will be half filled Fingers crossed

Jack is specifically referred to in the article Clive. £100k per week, three year deal and has apparently made six appearances. Does it remind you of Luke Young or Dyer? At least with Dyer he tried to get fit. And then the next bit broke.

West Ham and their stadium situation is different but getting relegated and even double relegation isn't necessarily the worst thing as long as the club does have some financial security. We were in Admin and possibly/probably were saved by having Ollie at that time but ultimately I think most grew to accept being in the 3rd tier and then the fact we were winning games again galvanised the support, we got a trip to Millennium stadium and then the great story of promotion after that disappointment. Perhaps a mini rebirth after the sham of Vinnie Jones and Razor Ruddock? I think Sunderland are similar in some ways, Forest, Norwich and Ipswich? West Ham do need to look at Coventry but tbh it seems that although the Olympic Park isn't suited to football and will affect crowds in lower leagues their rent agreement does seem to suggest that they aren't a direct comparison to Coventry, getting rid of the Premier league wages will be their biggest priority. I think relegation can often be a blessing for a club and if it's managed correctly you come out of it healthier, Hibs although staying in lower league 3 yrs managed to rebuild and even won the cup, struggling at the bottom of the league for years just creates a malaise and boring survival football

I liked Ruddock, don't think you can put him in the same basket as Vinnie Jones.

The thing that saved us is we own Loftus Road. Coventry and West Ham don't own their stadiums. I doubt it but West Ham could end up homeless like Coventry. They needed something like 23k at the Ricoh to break even and were getting nowhere near that. Not sure what the break-even point is at the Olympic Stadium but it'll be a hinderance and out of their control.

Yes that's kind of what I was meaning with financial control, it's a big issue for whatever plans are afoot for Loftus Road as we'll have a downturn even though we look to be on sounder footing just now | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I think the difference is politically with it being the Olympic Stadium etc I don't think they want them to go now they're in. Could be wrong but I reckon it's different to Coventry and Ricoh in that somebody else (Wasps) came in to buy the ground from the council and the Charity who co owned it at the time. Whoever did their original deal did a terrible wrong to the club and fans, the situation is different I think with West Ham and being London etc.

They certainly did well to snatch a draw from the mouth of victory yesterday!
