Very sad. The sixties was by far the greatest decade for music. Wonder how many "stars" of today will still be performing in 50 years time.

Always sad when someone passes away no doubt about that and certainly not my type of music but that song YNWA has superb lyrics in it and like it or not it is lyrically a classic, well in my book it is.

RIP.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

And a lot of clubs fans used to sing it in the 70’s too, including us at times.
RIP Gerry.

After 50 years? I've forgotten most of them after 50 minutes. The stars of my youth are slowly disappearing.

You can if you want but it is true. There were variations on the words and rhythm at times.

As for the song it is from the 1956 musical 'Carousel' and written by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Personally, I find the strings on it a bit mushy and prefer other numbers by Gerry and the Pacemakers.

And the 2070 Christmas Number 1 from 150 year old Captain Tom...his heartfelt rendition of ‘Smack My Bitch Up’.

The film was made in 1956, but as mentioned in the BBC article, the song was written in 1945.

Great song but I don't share the rose-tinted view of Liverpool or their fans, which ruins the song for me.

Thanks TacticalR. I hadn't read the BBC article and didn't know the show was that much older than the film.

I didn't realise how old it was until I read the article. The stage musical was first, then the film. I think the song hasn't dated too much because Rodgers and Hammerstein used a very simple vocabulary.
