This must have been done before, but as we approach the end of the season we will be snacking more. No more rhyming, but are you sweet or savoury?

Just finished a massive bowl of ready to share potato sticks. Twiglets next.

Yum.

Plain chocolate digestives. I could eat a pack in one go of left alone long enough.

Wasabi peas. And Bombay mix. Pro-tip, drink your Bombay mix out of a mug so your hands don't get grubby

I've never known the difference between sweet and savoury.
I don't get it.

Am I kicked out?

Popcorn is a good place to start, Brian.

Salty - good. Savoury.

Sweet - bad.

I do accept that there are fine lines here. Some feckers even buy mixed bags where they mix salt and savoury in the same bag.

Brian, As a rule, if you can imagine eating something in a pub with dirty bogs and no kitchen, it’s probably savoury. Scotch egg - savoury. Strawberries - sweet. Cashews may be the exception here.

Potato sticks are amazing, but not for sharing from the same bowl. When you shovel them into your gob, your hand gets all wet and then your hand is straight back in the bowl. Urgh.

Something I wasn’t aware of until moving to Bristol, was people in pubs having a pickled egg in a bag of salt and vinegar crisps. The locals swear by it. Never seen that in London.

I’m saying if you can’t imagine eating it in a pub with dirty bogs and no kitchen - i.e. something like strawberries - then it’s probably sweet. Anything they might be able to rustle up - crisps, rolls, sausage roll/pork pie/Scotch Egg/Pickled egg, is likely to be savoury. You can extrapolate from there.

Tortilla chips, couple of dips, job done. Savoury all the way for me.

As snacks go though, my old mum on the other hand is presumably the one person keeping the pickled cockle industry in business.

God, that sounds gross.

Sometimes West Country "cuisine" has to be approached with caution, I reeled a bit when someone told me about pubs which sold badger ham and I found out the basic ingredients involve an actual dead badger.

Smoked eel was/is lovely though. Not exactly available as a pub snack though.

Our classic mix is cheese popcorn + sweet (caramel) popcorn. Yes you read that correctly. No its actually not as bad as you think.

Nuts. I'm like a truffle pig, I just know when there are any in the house and I tear the place down until I find them. Salty first, then smoky, honey-roast; dry roasted a distant fourth.

The problem for me with any salty snack is once started I cannot stop until I've scoffed the lot, regardless of the size of the container.

I stopped buying any years ago and ever since my snack life since has been terribly dull.
