I can understand the need for change during the pandemic,but once they’ve done away with them this season will they ever come back?

We have had quite a few actually. Here are some of the early ones, post WW2.
In 45-46 season , 3rd round, we drew 0-0 in both games with Palace and then at Craven Cottage, won 1-0.
In the 52-53 season we drew the opening two matches, both 2-2, of the 1st Round with Shrewsbury Town only to lose at Villa Park in the third 4-1.
In the 54-55 season and again Highbury was our demise. We played Walthamstow Avenue. This was the 1st round as well. 2-2 in both early games and then four more goals in the Highbury match, except we lost 4-0. |  | | |

The longest "match" was in the 1971/72 season in the 4th Qualifying Round. Alvechurch beat Oxford City in the 6th match & had to play their 1st round match a couple of days later.
I ws present at the first match when Ipswich needeed 3 replays to beat Leeds in the 6th round in 1975. The matches were saturday, tuesday, monday & two days later on the wednesday. | | | |
