I remember getting a football special from Wembley Central. I think it stopped at Queens Park and then Norwich. I remember the noise when we arrived at Norwich and walking around the back of the station.

They finished up with a goal average of 2.129 and we finished at 2.030,but even if we’d drawn at naarwich rather than lost we would’ve ended up level on points but with a goal average of 2.09375,so they would’ve still won.Even if they’d only beaten wolves 2-1 instead of 3-1 their GA would’ve been 2.09677.A lot closer, but still enough to beat us overall.
They would’ve won if it was GD or if it was 3 points for a win.If it was decided on GD and we’d drawn at naarwich we would’ve both finished with +35 and we scored 67 to their 66,so the title might’ve been ours after all.And we would’ve finished 1 point above them if it was 3 points for a win and we’d drawn at naarwich.84pts to their 83.
I heard the refs name was keith Styles. It wasn’t his son Rob who screwed us over 23 years later was it?
We threw away our chances by losing to them Norfolk b@stards,or by only drawing 0-0 with relegated Sheffield Utd earlier in the season.

Googling Keith Styles it turns out he was from t'Barnsley so was unlikely to be any relation of the dreaded Rob.

I've mentioned it before but our record away from home against the teams that finished in the bottom six was very poor for a team that finished runners up.

Away
22nd Sheff U Drew 0-0
21st Burnley Lost 1-0 (no change there)
20th Wolves Drew 2-2
19th Birmingham Drew 1-1
18th West Ham Lost 1-0
17th Arsenal Lost 2-0

Six games, three draws and three defeats, three points from 12. As it ever was with us. Liverpool took eight from the same fixtures.

We had a poor December (no change there!) taking only four points out of 10 and since thrashing reigning champions Derby 5-1 on their own patch in August we then went twelve away games without winning before we won at Villa Park at the end of January (D5 L7)

The West Ham away game was originally scheduled to be one of our last games that season but was re-arranged and brought forward to FA Cup 4th round day as reigning holders West Ham were out and we also suffered one of our usual 3rd round defeats.

I believe we would have won the West Ham game had it been played when it was originally scheduled. What made it worse was that the following weekend after our defeat there, Liverpool went to Upton Park and walloped them 4-0

I was 6 and we'd just moved back to Ireland. I have memories of my Dad and me listening to it on the radio. First time I'd seen him cry.

He never really followed Rangers with the same passion after that.

Yep I was there as well, still bitter about it after all these years........

Was in the seats to the left of the terraced pen and looking straight along the 6 yard line, Boyer wasn't even in the same postcode as the ground he was so far offside.......

Amazing support that day, constant stream of cars going up the A11 with Blue and White scarves hanging out the back.......

Also had the misfortune to go to Molineaux on the night that Liverpool scored the 3 goals in the last 14 minutes to win the title....... awful experience, couldn't even get in the ground and stood on a grassy bank where you could see half the pitch surrounded by Scousers.

I was not there, but I was at the previous home game (was it Middlesbrough?) when there was a long chant of 'If you're going to Norwich, clap your hands.' The excitement was at fever pitch and the assumption was that, with the team that we had, an away game at Norwich was very winnable.
Oh dear.

I was there, still haven't got over it. The Wolves game just rubbed more salt into the wounds, what with them being one up for much of the match.

Ha Tramore, wonder would we have recognized each other? I also went to Wolverhampton, but we got in with the Wolves. The thing that struck me was the number of Liverpool fans in the ground, heaving with them in the away end, large numbers elsewhere and scattered around the edges of the stand we were in.

For the umpteenth time it was UEFA & the FA that postponed the Liverpool match & not the FL!

Wales were playing in a European Championship play off that day & Liverpool had enough players in the squad for it to be called off. Leeds also tried to have our game postponed, but they were one player short from the required number.

Bizarrely, playing in Europe worked to Liverpool's advantage.
What also worked more to Liverpool's advantage was Wales making the quarter finals of the 1976 Euros. The first legs were due to be played on the last weekend of scheduled first division fixtures.

Liverpool had Toshack and Jones in the Welsh squad so due to rules at the time their game with Wolves could be postponed due to the international call ups. They then played the first leg of the UEFA Cup final the following Wednesday.

Why the Football League scheduled their game with Wolves for Tuesday 4th May rather than Saturday 1st is a mystery, particularly as the second leg of the UEFA Cup final wasn't due to be played until the 19th May. This was also highly unusual as there was a three week gap between the two legs of the final when it was usually two.

Their final schedule was:
Mon 19th Apr - League game 41
Wed 28th Apr - UEFA Cup final 1st leg
Tues 4th May - League game 42
Wed 19th May - UEFA Cup final 2nd leg

For those days, that was an unbelievably lenient run-in, particularly when you compare it with Leeds' run-in in 1970 when they were going for the treble with the European Cup and no surprise that with a six day break for their final league game and then another two week break they ended up winning the league and the UEFA Cup.
