He could have gone with a far more defensive midfield but hasn't so far. I get what you mean about the final, although apart from a good 10 minutes from Italy after half time I didn't think there was much in it |
Fair point You can only beat what's in front of you I suppose. Let's see how we set up and play against top seeded nations

Fair enough but in a hypothetical scenario where we’ve beaten France, Spain and Argentina to win the World Cup, I doubt we’d be too worried about our qualifying group for the Euros! Not that I can recall us losing many qualifiers (or tournament games for that matter) under Southgate anyway so it seems like a bit of a red herring. [Post edited 6 Dec 2022 7:02]

Freshen up after winning the World Cup and with a squad of young exciting players such as Bellingham, Saka, Foden etc? John Lyall….. West Ham manager for 15 years from the mid 70’s. Oversaw a team that yo-you’d from FA Cup winners to Cup Winners Cup finalists to relegation then promotion then team rebuilding and so on. In today’s environment he would have “had to go” the moment they got relegated. The club stood by him whilst he rebuilt. As always in this situation, people demand a new manager and for things to change without suggesting who should come and what they should do differently. So, who and how?

That final hurt because we know we lost at home to a bang average team and tossed a great chance to win a tournament away. The team is now a bit older and more experienced. The addition of Bellingham is a huge plus and Foden is a better player now than then. I don't think there's any denying that we're still improving as a tournament team. The Senegal performance reminded me of some of the good German sides of the past. We have pace, power and multiple goal threats. Beating France is definitely possible.

Italy were far from bang average, they were really good last summer, beat Belgium and Spain to get to the final and the final there was nothing in it really, nether side did enough to win it. Foden getting injured in training and missing the final was a big blow, think we'd have won it if he came off the bench that night

Yep longest unbeaten run https://www.uefa.com/uefanationsleague/news/026d-132c3f1155e7-e4c679188d16-1000- Its utter madness that people are seeing issues with Southgate. Honestly think he could beat Brazil 5-0 in the final and people would still say its not as good as 1990 and we just don't have anyone like Gazza anymore. This England team are united, they are good and they are achieving really good things. Why would anyone wan't to change that??

Really we have to produce 3 of our best ever tournament results to win this. France are very good then probably an excellent Portugal side then Brazil or Argentina. You could make the same argument for France as well if they go onto win it, thats a tough run. It's not impossible but I can't see England winning this which will probably be seen as a failure.

This. Rio Ferdinand has commented a few times about club rivalries that existed during his time with England and also certain players not wanting to be there and faking injuries to avoid being called up. The current situation under Southgate is a world away from that.

Not denying it was a fantastic opportunity but I didn't thinK England did much wrong in the final. Was a very close game, they had a good spell after half time when they got level but after that England were more than a match for them. penalties could have gone either way

B I N G O Successful recent nations like France and Spain went through huge cultural changes over two decades to win silverware. It didn’t happen by accident or because they lucked out on a single individual. It was long term cultural and infrastructure change and lots of investment. England have been doing that for a while now starting with St Georges and changes to youth coaching. Look at England success over decades not ten years. QPR dare I say it trying to do the same and we should back it as a method. [Post edited 7 Dec 2022 13:17]

England ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ v Senegal 🇸🇳 Match Thread on 15:35 - Dec 7 with 795 views | NorthantsHoop | Quality, mindset and history. The England v French game on Saturday, pretty even odds for me. This game does not have the same hyperbole connected to it as with playing Germany and Italy, especially against Germany in World Cup and Euros, where the background and expectation is wrapped up in more than just football and it takes on a media frenzy all of its own, which has tended to work against us. This game against France think we are much more evenly matched, we have a superb range of midfield players and attacking force, the French will be wary of. France are a brilliant team but England are as well major semi and final in last 2 tournaments. Hope Mr Southgate has prepared us for penalties. If we get through and meet Portugal they look on fire. The irony of all this is played and beat both France and Portugal on our way to victory in 66. [Post edited 7 Dec 2022 15:43]

England ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ v Senegal 🇸🇳 Match Thread on 19:49 - Dec 7 with 701 views | ngbqpr | This. The start of the real change in approach to youth coaching was in 2010 - I was lucky enough to take part in the first 'youth module' coaching course when it was rolled out in 2010. The irony wasn't lost on us when one day we were allowed to leave the course an hour early...to go & watch us humbled by Germany in the SA World Cup. Summer 2010: Foden was 10, Saka was not quite 9, Bellingham just turning 7...this is the generation where we will hopefully reap the benefits of our change in coaching culture....when this lot are at their mid-20s peak, and the 20 year olds coming through have been schooled the same way...and are all Champs League regulars too.

Nice one. St Georges Park was done in 2012 I think... so just another decade to go then. Sorry but this modern day British approach of "it's okay not to win" is bollox. Even more so when you are in a Final, in your own backyard, with a partisan crowd, playing against an aging and creaking backline when you are blessed with pace and attacking riches yet send your team out to "contain". Petty, small minded and blinkered you may think I am but that performance and result will forever be a stain on the multitude of good things Southgate has done. All that aside.... It’s maths you are arguing with mate (and French and Spanish World Cup wins) If you was a 12 year old when St George’s opened you’d only be 22. It’s no coincidence that Bellingham, Foden, and Saka are arguably our best players and have already won World Cups and European Championships. Piss and vinegar and pints of wine might make you feel good because they remind you of the good old days but it delivered fck all for 50 years. You got to walk out of a final for the first time since ‘66 and it’s a shame you are angry at the reason you got there. [Post edited 7 Dec 2022 22:15]

I'll be 32 when I win a major tournament though!! Not looking for an argument and I totally get the welcome change in modern day coaching has been brilliant. I was no fan of the "put it in the mixer" and "four four fckin two" approach. However I think it's a stretch to say St Georges is a fulcrum for this -- it's surely a sea change across the world??? We all looked at Spain and France in wonderment but all they really did was encourage ball players, pace and aggressive running to close other teams down. That's the football we all want to see but with a bit of a mix up now and then. that cross the board change has been main factor in some diamonds emerging for us IMHO We'll see on Saturday how our Gareth plays it and please God all those three lads you mention play plus maybe Rashford (who I've loved as a player since he was 17 and backed totally even in his dip -- he is a real game changer when on it). BTW .... the anger long since faded... the disappointment and disengagement does live on though (I know how my wife feels about our marriage now)
