20mph speed limit. 14:26 - May 18 with 7633 viewsSnipper

The amount of people I know who are being sent letters from the Metropolitan Police informing them of a penalty notice in 20mph areas is mental. Many of them for doing 25mph.

I perfectly understand why it’s 20mph outside schools and the surrounding areas, but 20mph late at night on the way home from work is obscene.

It’s got sod all to do with safety in my opinion. It’s a bloody cash cow for the old bill.

It’s a very easy way to criminalise people.

And no, I haven’t been done.

15 years or so ago we were told 30 is fine, now it's 20?
Like with diesel and everything else they can't seem to make their mind up or even get it right.

As for motorway driving, I don't use them that often (mainly M25 or M3) but when I do I'm always in the nearside lane doing around 65mph. Really makes a difference and less stressful while all the other nutters are dicking around in the middle lane hogging, zooming along at 80+ and so on. I see some tw@t in a BMW, Audi, Merc, whatever, pratting around at high speed and they get to their destination about 5 mins before me. Is it really worth it for 5 mins over a 1-2 hour journey?

A combination of getting older and having kids in the car makes me just avoid getting involved in all of that and it does really make a difference. Try it.

Same here, although not so much in my youth 😁

Have to say when I’m out walking the dogs it always feels much safer and pleasant in residential areas with cars keeping to 20mph

Great fun trying to go downhill from Hampstead to Camden on a steep hill at 20 in a 3.5 ton van getting passed by cyclists.

It won't be too long before you'll be limited to driving at 20mph to away games to watch us "achieve" 20% possession. Then of course 20mph back home.

What an exciting world we have to look forward to....

As long as we’ve got a 20 goal a year striker in there who gives a fck 😂

Make it 30mph and they'll start driving at 40mph, etc.
Our street is 20mph, mainly because it's too narrow with all the on-road parking for it to be safe to drive much faster. But that doesn't stop some d1ckheads driving down here at 60mph and hitting people's wing mirrors/ cats/ etc.
If the police would let me start chucking out a stinger spike system at cars that go way too fast, I would quite happily sit out the front of our house stopping all the cars that go way too fast.

100% of people who drink water will die.

I think on roads like that 20 is fine. i used to live on a road like that and it was a ‘mare as people would do 40+, in a 20, because they were trying to jump the queue for the lights on the bigger parallel road.
However, 20 on bigger roads is just plain silly. 30mph on the Westway is bonkers. I know it’s to do with the structure but as it’s an average speed zone there’s no reason why bigger vehicles can just be restricted to 30 (keeping to the nearside) and ordinary cars and motorbikes can do 40.

On the other hand . . . .
A couple of times recently I have taken the ferry over to Hoek van Holland and driven through to Germany. The Dutch motorway is limited to 100kph (62mph) - for pollution reasons - and on both there-and-back trips I never saw any accidents. Cross the border into Germany and limit goes up to 130kph (80mph) or sometimes no speed limit at all (not everywhere - that's a myth) - but amost immediately you get stuck in traffic jams creeping past car smashes. It really is a noticeable difference.
