VAT software 20:40 - Nov 15 with 3219 viewsdannyblue

This site is the home of so much experience...

I'm a sole trader and I need to start reporting VAT.

My affairs are pretty simple. One invoice a month or so. Very few expenses if any. I'm on a flat rate scheme.

I'd rather report myself and don't feel the need to pay an accountant but apparently I need to use software for 'making tax digital'.

Can anyone recommend any simple software, preferably free?

Not sure if you'll find anything for free. This seems like part of the Government's quest to monetise absolutely everything that used to be free - I used to file the return directly on the HMRC website, no bother, very simple. Now I have to use third party software to do exactly the same thing but with an additional step and pay for the privilege. I use 123 sheets, by the way.

When I had my limited company for work I used a bit of software called Vital Tax which was a macro enabled spreadsheet, was reasonably easy to use and did the job.

I think I used to pay about twelve quid for a yearly license. It's twenty now.

I use Xero for submitting my VAT. I wouldn’t say it’s easy to use and not really recommending it but it does work. It’s not free I think I pay about £15 a month for it now but the cost keeps rising surprise, surprise. It seems to be a loosely regulated racket like so many things. For just submitting VAT I reckon any of the big names will do, I’m not aware of any free software. Good luck.

This claims to be free. https://mytaxdigital.co.uk/

Haven't used it yet. Wonder how they make their money. Perhaps they sell my details to the 'affiliates'.

I'm in the same boat ,and i think while inflation keeps rising and the VAT threshold stays the same there's gonna be a load of sole traders having to go VAT.
I've just switched from Coconut which I thought was good to Xero which my accountant recommended. Still getting to grips with it all.

I was recommended TaxCalc by my friend and esteemed fellow poster here Simon D. Very cheap and very easy to use.

Been using TaxCalc too, easy enough. You'll need to have your VAT return figures on a spreadsheet to link to.

I use Anna - https://business-x.anna.money/ - they have started charging £3.50 a go now.

Think https://mytaxdigital.co.uk/ - is still free for now.

Sounds like you got a few answers

Most accountants would use Sage, Xero or Quickbooks but with so little entries required a basic Microsoft excel spreadsheet template specifically for what you need, would be available, am sure.

So no need pay for package, I would have thought.

Not done books for sometime though now so seems you should already have your answer from others.
