I know that I'm going to get accused of hitting the mulled wine too soon from some on here, but I've been thinking of how we could possibly bolster the squad in light of the recent news regarding pitch renovations and the costs involved. Other teams will soon be adding to their squads in preparation for the second half of the season. We have quality running deeper than previously, and I realise Jim has identified a certain profile that he wants in his players. However, in my humble opinion, I fear that nice footballers with polite footballing etiquette both on and off the pitch are not necessarily going to get us over the line. Other teams have players and managers within their ranks who have that bit of mongrel about them. Who is going to hold the ball up in the corner with a couple of minutes to go in order to secure the points? Who is going to get into the referee's face to question a dubious decision? Who is going to get a grip of an opposing player and put the fear of God into them? Don't be mistaken in thinking that I'd prefer a team of hard men and cloggers. But, perhaps, an experienced free agent like Quigley might be the difference needed. He's a year older that EEL.....knows the club and the league.....a big unit who can hold the ball up......good in the hair......chips in with goals...a pantomime villain type who opposing fans would warm to......and a man that I certainly wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. Thoughts please.......

You've been supping mulled wine. Quigley was hopeless when he played for us, i'm not sure his attitide was great neither. We'll probably see a replacement for Amantchi but i'm confident it wont be your fella.

5 goals in 26 appearances......he impressed me MUCH more than Mr Amantchi

I still cannot understand why a fit Rodney was relegated to the bench or played out wide to fit in Quigley.

I still think if O'Donnell, Rodney and Brieley had played more that we would not have been relegated.

Quigley came on as a late sub when we won at Wimbledon just after McNulty took over from Bentley. He didn’t appear again after that.

He’s also not played this season.

I'm not saying that Quigley suits our style of play. I'm thinking more about his personality. In my eyes, Jim is still a coach and not a real manager as of yet. Players with different personalities need to be managed. I don't want us winning the best behaved trophy for the 15th consecutive year with solely a bunch of choir boys who wouldnt say boo to a goose. I want us to win promotion. Taylor could surely sort a couple of bad apples out?

Quigley will go down for me as one of the worst players to ever play for this club. Seemed more interested in arguing with centre backs on occasion than contributing to a team who desperately needed him to perform. McNulty referenced the importance for him in the first few weeks of getting the job of changing the culture and getting rid of ‘blockers’ to that change. Pretty sure he was referring about Quigley.

McNulty was manager when Quigley was here and could have retained him or looked to sign him from Stockport permanently. Whilst accepting fans see players differently, I thought Quigley’s attitude was poor.

We’ve had plenty of bookings this season, we’ve visibly looked to waste time and manage game and McNulty has already had a touchline ban. Don’t think there are any issues with us being too nice this season.

To be fair, Mani fits the bill you're after, sometimes to a fault, but he can play too

But what is 'too nice'? I've not seen players pull out of tackles and we have certainly recieved bookings for hauling players down when they have been breaking. What we wont do is adopt shithouse tactics and deliberately look to hurt players.

Quigley is probably still quite decent at this level but I think we aspire for more than what he could give us as an overall package.

Cant see him realistically displacing Dev or Smith as Manni's striking partner.

Lets sign a premiership youngster who will develop into a superstar if we need to.

Otherwise I would like to see some centre back cover (not a youngster).

I'd stay off the mulled wine, if I was you, KK.

Name one of the current squad that you wouldn't mess with if you were an opposing player? Doesn't have to be SQ.....just a bullish sort player of that of ilk!

I wouldn’t want him or any of his ilk at Dale ..I don’t think we need an old warrior type at all.

Would prefer a young whippet style playing up front.

A bit like ALF in his hey day

Never mind staying off the mulled wine, you need to give the turps a rest for a bit. The gaffer has got us squeezing every last bit of advantage where we can - right up to the laws of the game and just before the line of sh!thousery.

I am proud of our respectable history, I am proud of our current team being able to win games, be successful and be role models for our younger generations.

I do not want to be cheering on gobshytes "getting in the face of the referee" and looking for a fight.

You only have to look at rugby to see that tough, hard, fooking monsters of men can play sport with all that aggression but be respectable.

It's a big NO from me!

It appears that most opposing players have had enough problems with us when it matters this season.

I think the phrase is "When in a hole..."

Mani could get embroiled in a row at a church service. The player I wouldn’t take liberties with is Ollie Whatmuff, he wasted no time getting involved in a bye line altercation , which Kyron Gordon started In an earlier game this season. I also think you underestimated Gordon he can certainly mix it.
Said in a thread a few weeks ago that Jason Taylor took no sh-t when he played for us and I think he has brought that into our dressing room.
I really don’t want to win the fair play award this year and with this squad I don’t think we will.

You dont need or want that type of player these days? You can't play overly physical - it will be given as a foul and if you carry on you'll just get sent off.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

We had plenty of sh!thouses under Coleman and that didn't go so well. I echo someone else's thoughts about being proud of the 'respectable' image our club has. I don't see the need for us to turn into a Duncan Ferguson type side, considering we're top of the league and all that. I'd hate to see us getting into the ref's face every game and scrapping at every opportunity.

Scott Quigley on 06:54 - Dec 1 with 993 viewsNerazzurri

We will always be near the top of the fair play league as we are a possession based team that likes to control matches. The only bookings you’d expect us to pick up regularly are stopping breakaway attacks. Doesn’t mean we are soft, just that we’re dominating the ball, and you can’t give fouls away if you’ve got control of the ball!

Forza Nerazzurri
