Does he do any commentating these days? Not heard him for ages.

He felt like a bit of a breath of fresh air back in his Capital Gold days (with Tennent's Pilsner).

Yes I am that old

Him and Drury are equally dreadful.

Weaver as mentioned also terrible.

None of them adhere to the Benaud maxim. Just spout bollox and prepared unfunny/unclever cr8p they try and shoehorn in.

I used to think Tyldesley and Champion were rubbish but actually in comparison to the current crop were not that bad.

My favourites were Davies, Moore and Peter Brackley

Good call on Brackley. Met him in the station bar after the 4-4 in the Potteries; thoroughly decent fella.

I'll be honest (puts tin hat on) I never liked Barry Davies or Motty. I met the latter at a function and chatted to him for ages, such a nice bloke. I could have mentioned any of the 92 clubs and he'd have known what the craic was.

Yes Peter Brackley RIP :(

He was also a great mimic and could do a very good Jimmy Greaves!

Jonathan Pearce really grinds my gears. Liked him on Capital Gold about 30-35 years ago, but on the beeb I find him grating.

Brian Moore is the King for me. Everytime I hear his voice it just takes me back to watching The Big Match in the 80's. Just love the tone of his voice.

Here is one of my favourite pieces of Moore's simple but brilliant commentary... "That's there, that's two and that's Bowles!"

Brian Moore, Barry Davies, John Motson. I know I'm getting on but those were the days.

Great thread this .

My stepdad (god rest his soul) had a somewhat strange hatred of John Motsen. He would always mute it when it was Motsen doing the game . I didn’t dare tell him that I quite liked his commentary.
He and Davies and Moore were just so much better than the nonsense we have now .
Weaver for me is unlistenable . Just so much tripe spewed out over not very much at all.
The other one I cannot stand listening to on Sky is Alan Smith.
I mean he must just sit wrapped in Arsenal garb . THE most biased commentator on tv.
