This has been irritating me / confusing me so maybe someone can reason with me.

This feels like a problem that doesn’t need solving. Black cabs, Uber, mini cabs all relatively easy to get and certainly in the case of black cabs provide some level of safety and security. Plus it gives employment to many thousands of drivers.

‘This development will make a handful of people very rich at the expense of many people. At the risk of sounding like a Luddite, why is this being allowed to happen?

That's been the aim since capitalism took hold in the 80s tbf.

Agreed. Up to a point. But a lot of changes are at least dressed up in suggesting a better outcome for the consumer (Faster / Cheaper / Better). This doesn’t even pretend to do any of those things.
