Parker looked as if he tired towards the end of the first half or was he asked to tuck in more, Ward was needed as back up to Key, was Parker deemed too inexperience for the championship or did he have previous injury issues, luckily we had Ward for cover for Key but because of Ward lack of fitness it has enable Parker time to bed in a bit without subjecting him to the rigours of 90 minutes which a lot of us think he will ultimately capable but I'm happy for a cautious approach with the season coming to a close.
Would Ronald have been a better option to come on instead of Nunes and I was surprised to see Stamenic coming off given he was stepping forward more often in this game than before meaning the gap between the forwards and defence seem to decreased and we were able to get forward in a more controlled manner.
Given the work Eom put in he seem to flag towards the end of the game or was he better suited on the right by moving him to the left did we made too many changes to the right hand side lots of ifs and buts wouldn't have Nunes or Yalcouye back and would hope to use Ward in a more limited capacity as or if needed.
Enjoyed the facted we got ahead and disappointed we were unable to hold on to the gamefrom a leading position which we have done relatively well under Matos |

Get the ball or not - and I thought he got Franco not the ball but would need to see it again - he came in with excess force from behind which is a foul. The ref was under a lot of pressure to endure the top of the table remains competitive for some reason! |

I’m a big fan of Vig but he wasn’t at his best today. He dropped a catch also which could have ended up as a goal. He's 6’4” so i’d expect him to be better at that side of the trade.
His distribution was well below par today as well. |

For a big lad he’s not good going for high balls or even to punch it clear ,he seems to be afraid of challenging for high balls and stays rooted to his line which causes us real problems

It was noticable last season and it's very clear this season that refs are adopting a different standard for fouls. I have come to this conclusion from watching matches where I really don't care who wins.
The days of the appalling MoTD "There was contact, so he's entitled to go down" seem to have gone. What I have noticed is that if a player 'improves' a foul or possibe foul and tries to make the contact more than it was, then the ref accepts his advice that the original contact wasn't enough and plays on.
That extends further. If refs see players constantly 'improving' contact during the game, they become very cautious. | | | |

If you are saying we cannot defend a lead then I cannot fully agree with you, we have seen much better defensive displays compared to the like of William's and Martin's teams against the lower in the league teams we have coped quite well, if you look at games against the higher teams they have punished when we over commit players forward leaving us out numbered in defence as for teams around us we faired about the same as them.
If they pressured the wingers into the middle then that seems to be a lack of midfielders being there so the wingers can move the ball quickly without being caught on the ball, defending a lead doesn't necessarily need us camped in our penalty area, Idah held the ball up well but support was slow in coming. | | | |

Thought Eom did well in that case holding up the ball the lack of support seemed a bit strange had we by that time decided to keep things tight or had we run out of steam, for me the midfielder closest to the man on the ball should be busting a gut to get forward to support the next two out of the three we play with, one should be holding the midfield the other adding more support so stopping the counter attack and putting pressure on the opposition that is up to those two players to work out who does what. Where was the winger on the other side in that instance he was nowhere to be seen break away needs support Eom did right stood the defenders up but unlike the Jamal Lowe/Key play and goal no support was forthcoming mind set of the midfielders or tired out by the work to contain Southampton attacks .

Is it a lack of on field awareness or not concentrating on what is possible, it is almost as if players get into a mindset of I've done what I needed to do in the one instant for example get back and defend and then switch off as to what is possible going forward.
Tiredness or a lack of focus for that 90 minutes.
You have to temper some of our views because if players don't use times in the game to recover from say a number of sprinting, lung busting runs then muscle fatigue will cause problems, there are reason why lots of managers in the past have changed wingers at the 60 minute mark because of the exertion they have put into a game.
Now with 5 subs the intensity of the games can be higher and tired players get caught out.
Someone mentioned they thought Stamenic tightened up as a reason for him to come off, he did seem cover more ground against Southampton than in other games, I mentioned Parker seemed to tire at the end of the first half given how well he played both in attack and defence.
If the defence lies very deep then the midfield has an awful lot of ground to cover to support both attack and defence similarly so do fullbacks or wingers add to the fact we try to high press we see centre forwards constantly sprinting to close players down and playing out from the back, similarly the centrehalves playing from so deepp from goal kicks have to progress the ball up the pitch with a lot of movement off the ball and then counter centre forwards sprints to find space or cover the ball over the top and in the channels.
Are we trying to sustain a high intensity game for 90 minutes that is impossible to do even for professional players, after sprints players need to recover, 'fitter' players can recover faster but even they have their limits. We are asking our ten outfield players to play at 100% pace for the full 90 minutes that is impossible players have to utilise dead ball times to recover or ensure cover in gets put in place when someone makes a run from deep.
Tymon seems to have a lot of energy but sometimes that energy needs to be conserved for defending properly , it is a team game and players have to cover and support runs but at times we have to learn to get back into a defensive shape quickly to let those players making forward runs recover.Constant low pace runs to find space or to get closer to mark players is much better than that continuous last minute dash to make up for bad positioning. How many players get caught out thinking yea I'm close enough to him to mark him but are not goalside and cannot get back to mark a player properly. | | | |

If you are talking about Wood's challenge on Franco if my memory of the facts and the incidences is right then Wood cleared the ball dropped his foot and then raised it again catching Franco my intial reaction was a red card, the ref went to the assistant ref who had a clear view and all that was given was a throw in. For me the officials with good views of the situation bottled it, why did the ref go to inquire if he didn't think there was an issue, the same could be said of the Downes issue assistant ref and fourth official oin close proximity to help the ref, Downes had lost it was the first challenge worth a red or at least a yellow and the confrontation after worth a red or yellow , should Downes have been sent off.
As for the penalty shout if I could see a shirt pulled from the east stand the positioning of the ref in relation to the assistant should be good enough for one of them to make the correct decision.
Three game changing incidences not seen or officials not brave enough to make the correct decisions.
A game we deserved a lot more from. High intensity game in which Southampton were rattled and got away with it. [Post edited 20 Apr 10:14]
