Who on earth gave you 100/1 for England to win the World Cup? |
Its probably not that simple. I would imagine if they pay out it will be at the normal odds and the difference credited to an account as free bets, which they will get back over time. There is a term for it that I can't remember, "sucker hook" or something like that. |  | | |

I never bet on sports, the bookies just don't make mistakes. Any advantage a customer might have is marginal at best. But I look at their aggregate odds and that's the probability of what's going to happen that I know of.
I do bet on politics where they often get the odds totally wrong. My best was Corbyn 100-1 for Labour leader when it was obvious to anyone who knew any Labour members he was what they wanted. Bish bosh. |
Yes all fair comment, they are poor at pricing up politics like you say but are usually pretty sharp at pricing up sports, so a lot of the time they are a good guide as to what might happen, but they don't always get it right.
During this world cup I've listened to a podcast or is it a vlog or I don't know the difference and the two boys on there are very good, I will be interested to see who they make favourites in the Eng v Arg game, I make Argentina slight favourites and I will be interested to see if they do as well, I will let you know.
Interestingly if you include the host 2 of them want England to lose although I'm sure 2 of the 3 of them are English (one said if he cheered for England he would be kicked out of the house by his father, Irish judging by the surname but no doubt English born and bred), its just light hearted banter but they are deadly serious about punting, but its Interesting how a lot of Celts don't want England to win, yet on this Swansea site a lot of Mushers do want England to win, beats me why, where I live there is a house that flies the flag of every country England play against, I wonder if they will put up Argentina's flag this week, I guess they will but we will see. |  |

The problem is that the English don't adhere to some Welsh social conventions, conventions that are especially strong with the Northies. Nothing wrong with that, but they don't.
In the pub, everyone you 'encounter' in whatever limited sense, we acknowledge as a human being, however briefly, however fleeting, but you do it. The English have no such social custom and don't, which comes across as negativity and arrogance.
Many of my English friends report going into North Wales pubs and they all start speaking Welsh. It never happens to me, and go there several times a year. [Post edited 12 Jul 18:35]
